thanks Destructor.  luckily I made a backup of my save game before I made the portal just in case I screwed up, so I'm going to fiddle around and see how many more portals pop up.  so far they all seem to be in one area, but I have to say the floating one looks pretty cool.

I’m definitely going to add hardcore mode to the game where dying will destroy the world. I’m not sure how it would work in multiplayer, though.. Perhaps you could get “banned” from the server until the world resets if you die on a server running hardcore mode.

It also looks like he pretty much has the Survival Multi-player stuff working with a couple new server updates.  I'll have to give that a try this weekend.

Would anybody here be able to host an always-on server for that?

I think I'm setting down Minecraft until Notch can get organized again.  Right now it feels like he's taking a shotgun approach with bug fixing, and the "fix a bug, create another bug" just doesn't work for me.

One of the updates in the "Halloween Update" I was really looking forward to, lanterns, didn't even make it into the update.  And there hasn't been one mention of it since then.

Hopefully beta looks better than this.

Well, you did pay for it and such, and more than likely put more hours into it than every other game in your collection (I know I have, at least anything I've played recently).

So give it a few months and it'll be brand new again with a ton of fun and new changes.

Of course, I haven't stayed away for long and have been checking out multiplayer now that monsters are enabled and damage happens.  Definitely changed the online server game.  Once he officially marks it beta, I'll probably open up a server.

We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise.
Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.

i got a lucky streak with a mountain composed heavily of cobblestone, so i have been able to turn it into a pretty nice looking apartment tower.  i am currently expanding it downward and outwards to search for other materials.  it took a while to get the hang of it, but i see the lure of addiction.  i haven't even begun to find all the other cool materials available, which makes it harder to do much at night except excavate the lower floors.

My son has been playing Minecraft in the solo mode and I bought him the beta version.  If you guys have a server that he can do multiplayer on can I get the link?  We have had the talk about if you play multiplayer you do not mess with other players buildings etc.

I would suggest in the early game that you just explore around the outside of cliffs to find some coal as soon as possible.

i will need to make it a day trip as the mountain i am on is pretty much the only big land feature on the island.  there are lots of little ones in sight but nothing that hints at a coal deposit.  i usually do my smelting at night for glass and use the minimal light it casts off to do more mining.  i have the smelter sitting above a glass floor which doesn't reach all the way down to the basement, but is enough when i am a few floors above.  i expanded out to the ground floor and put in windows and a lower door so i know when the sun comes up. 

i have a pretty cool trap in place for the spiders and the other creatures which lets me roam pretty freely during the day and not worry too much about them.  the damn lurkers aren't smart enough to climb up though so i always watch when i go out.  i just need to clear out the leaves around the top so the sun burns away the undead. 

i started a second world on my home pc and got a snow world.  looks pretty awesome but i haven't got many trees near the spawn.  great looking cave entrances though.

I sure miss the Friday updates. I'm sure things will ramp up after beta starts, but I'm looking forward to some new content!

I am working on a multiplayer server right now.  It'll be open to the public as soon as we have the main city / castle constructed.

It will be a Survival server, with monsters on.  Building will be restricted to realistic structures of a medieval nature only.  No single block towers to the sky, or office buildings.  I have some cool plugins like working gates and bridges, and the ability to protect areas from other people destroying it.

I'll give more information once we go live!
