FFS, why does Steam feel the need to reinstall Direct X every time I boot up a new game?   icon_evil

It doesn't actually reinstall anything. The DirectX installer just checks to see that everything is up to date, and then quits if no updates are needed. The process is quite quick. The reason you see this every time you start a new game is because Steam otherwise wouldn't have an installer for its games, and that would lead to frustration when people wouldn't get the correct DirectX-version or would be missing any other important tool the game might require (such as OpenAL or Visual Studio Redistributables).

That's was how I understood it, my intitial impression was I would have had to reinstall each time but poking around I got the impression I don't have to worry to much as it will just update all that is needed

I think some games aren't available in Europe, so it's not just you.

I missed spore.

Hang your head in shame.

Is it good, I was heavily wrapped up in MSFS and didn't realy follow what it turned out like.

No. It's a collection of games done way better by others that have been simplified and mashed together.

Probably great for the 8-12 yo crowd but pretty shallow for anyone else

Did they remove the new releases tab from the steam store or does it only go away during the sales?

They are both great games though I tend to favor the first one more. Not sure about the Steam versions but in the 2nd game they reworked the first game with the new engine.

I just couldn't finish that game. I ended up encountering too many sections where it looks like you're supposed to sneak past and you're heavily punished for not doing so, yet the enemy is placed in such a way that getting past undetected is next to impossible.

Well, that's a new one.  Finally got around to trying some of the games I picked up on the Steam sale, and was going to start with Zeno Clash.  Every time I try to launch it, I get a message saying "This game is not currently available.  Please try again another time."  Been that way for about an hour now.

Strange.

EDIT:  Wasn't Steam's fault.  Apparently McAfee views one of the Zeno Clash install files as a trojan and deletes it.  There's no fix other than fiddling with the AV settings, which I don't really feel like messing with (last time I did that, it caused major issues).  Not worth it for a $2 game, I suppose.

Most good AV packages should let you set up folders or files that the scanner should ignore, with no other issues caused than leaving that folder/file potentially exposed to viruses. Are you saying McAfee won't let you do that?

finished it twice now.  once back on '04 and again last year on the 360.  still as good even now.  never got that far into the next chapter though.

Visited bluesnews. They have an item, "New Catalyst Reference Drivers". Cool. Go to Steam, click on "Update AMD video drivers" and it tells me it's downloaded an update and asks if I want to install? Sure, go ahead. Done.

I heart Steam smile.

I've put in over 50 hours and completed the main story line, and I keep going back to finish locations and look for those last two vehicles.  It is SO worth $7.50.

This game was completely off my radar but people here and on QT3 just kept raving about it over and over. I haven't really seen anything negative about it. So when Steam refreshed yesterday and it came up for $7.50 I jumped all over it. Since my info is on file, it took 3 mouse clicks to buy it. That's scary easy.

but the great thing about the game is you don't have to do story missions, you can just run around relieving stress while blowing stuff up.  you only have about 90 minutes left before you regret not getting it for cheap  icon_twisted

I've been a fan and have loved steam up until 2 days ago.   I bought Dragon Age 2, played the heck out of it.  2 nights ago I was really looking forward to playing some more,  I fire up my PC and get a notice: Your steam account has been disabled.  I check my email account steam is associated with, I have no notifications from them, other than my receipt from them that I had purchased DA2.  All of my games are locked, I can't play any of the 20 some odd games I own, this is disheartening as i've done almost all of my PC game purchases through steam the last few years.

I sent in a ticket, and have heard nothing.  This is pretty piss poor customer service in my opinion.  Several hundred dollars worth of games that I legitimately own sitting on my hard drive that are unaccessible to me, and the company that has taken my money happily all these years hasn't sent one response, other than the  automated "here's your ticket number".  I was hoping to get it resolved before the weekend , as I'm sure their closed down over it, but it's looking pretty grim at this point.

That sucks. Sounds like you might have been hacked.

At least Valve announced a week ago that Steam Guard is now in beta. It's a system to help secure your Steam account from being hacked. With it enabled you have to authorize your account every time you attempt to use Steam on a computer where your account hasn't been logged in before.

That's pretty much how I play it.  About half way through the story mode and in zero hurry.  It is a great stress releif game.

I started buying a lot of games through Steam, especially during the holiday sales, but lately I've become very wary of spending $50+ on new games that are either from Steam or required to be linked to Steam.  In the last year or so, I've bought Torchlight, Metro 2033, Mafia II, and Left 4 Dead 2, and all of them have severe problems with crashes to desktop.  Mafia II became so bad as to be unplayable, since I could barely make it from save point to save point without the game crashing.

Whenever the crashes occur, I get no error messages other than "Program X has stopped working.  Windows is looking for a solution to the problem."  I've tried reinstalling the games, reinstalling Steam, reinstalling Windows, reinstalling and updating all drivers, and nothing has worked.  I've checked heat levels, I've checked RAM voltage levels, I've disabled anti-virus software, and still the games crash.  The thing that I find very odd is that the crashes only happen with games launched via Steam.  Games that are completely independent of Steam have no issues at all.  There are a few games within Steam that seem to have no problems, but probably 40-50% of my Steam library is at times unplayable due to this problem.  Incredibly frustrating, and tech support requests through both Steam and the individual game publishers have been useless.

I wonder if that's in any way a Steam problem.  That same sort of CTD and error message must have happened to me about a dozen times as I was playing Bulletstorm last weekend, and it's the GFWL version.

Sounds circumstantial to me. One way to test if your theory is correct is to run the fully working non-Steam games through Steam as well. If Steam is the problem, some of them should start showing the same symptoms. Otherwise the problem lies elsewhere.

Try starting steam and going offline, and then fire up a game.

Problem is ,to get to offline mode I have to launch steam. Right from the start it asks for my username / password.  Then tells me i'm disabled and won't go any further.  I tried going into the common folder and launching games from there, but they pop up the steam login too frown

I wouldn't mind so much if had heard ANYTHING from steam at this point beyond the "you've opened a ticket" email I got.  A way to check status, where I am in the que, something.

disable your network connection. You should then be able to authenticate.

So I got this response from steam this afternoon:

"Thank you for contacting Steam Support. The purchase of Dragon Age II has been disputed by Paypal. The Paypal account holder will need to close the dispute and have the funds returned to Steam. If the account holder is unable or unwilling to drop the dispute and let the PayPal know that the purchase is valid, and in turn have the funds returned to Steam, we will not be able to reactivate the account. All games on your account are locked to the account and can not be transferred to a different account. A different payment method can not be used for this game; the money must be returned by the PayPal account that made the original purchase. If the dispute is closed and the funds are released back to Steam, the account will be reactivated. However if PayPal closes the dispute by “Reversing the Payment”, meaning they send the funds for the purchase back to you, the Steam account will remain locked and you will lose access to all of the games on the account. There are no options to resolve a dispute once PayPal has closed the case, so we suggest that you contact them immediately"

So I contacted Paypal immediately.  Paypal told me there is no dispute with the payment and that funds were sent to steam and accepted by them on March 6th when i pre-ordered.  I have the paypal receipt that shows exactly that.  So i've sent that information back to Steam and now have to WAIT again for them to respond.  With Paypal I was able to call someone and talk to a customer service person within 5 minutes.  How come I can't do this with Steam, it is extremely frustrating.

I also have a lot of trouble with the above statement that says if Paypal reverses funds , my account and ALL OF MY GAMES are gone.  That is bullshit.  If I were to say bounce a check at Gamestop, they couldn't demand that I return everygame I ever purchased back to them.  They just won't sell me the one game.  If one game on my steam account is in dispute then by all means pull my access to it, but to permanently take away all other legitimate transactions is completely ridiculous in my opinion.

Anyway thanks for letting me rant all, hopefully I hear something more positive from steam soon...

Really awesome idea!! But it didn't work frown   It says I no longer have stored login data on my PC when I do that.

Agreed.  That's absolute bullshit and I'm disgusted that that is Valve's stance.

Wow that is very serious and worrying.. so I could lose all of my games if I get a dispute on a payment.

My credit card got hacked a while back luckily the bank chopped it the moment it showed a british person trying to make a transaction at 4am my time. If that happens and I have a transaction in progress I could lose the lot???

I am going to have to think on just how much I use steam from now on.

You don't lose anything, your account just gets locked until the dispute is solved. I understand this is so Valve can protect itself against fraud and so that they can stay on good terms with publishers. Imagine if they didn't react hard in such cases. People would abuse it to play games for free.

Not that this explains faide's problem right now.
