its the D-Pad that's apparently being reworked, which if you ask most people is the one thing that is actually wrong with the 360 controller....so this would be good

however, its only a rumour right now,Joystiq reckon it will be released for the Holidays
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/30/rumor-microsoft-prepping-new-xbox-360-controller-with-improved/

not sure about the rotating and rising though, but i suppose it will keep it away from that 'barrier' that surrounds the D-Pad(why they don't just do away with that Barrier i don't know)

Quote
According to our trusted source, when one rotates the d-pad ninety degrees on this new controller, it'll raise up about a quarter of an inch -- a modification apparently revealed to be targeted at fighting game fans.

What's wrong with the D-Pad?  Is it just not sensitive enough in the mid point directions?

well, its the fans of Fighter games that complain about it(mainly from what i have heard in the past),i myself don't really have a problem with it as i don't really use it that much

they complain about the circular barrier around the D pad,it stops them 'executing' some moves(for example you know how specific some Streetfighter moves can be right,up,diagonal right etc etc).....i like fighting games but i am shit at them so i stay away from them,so i can't really say myself

i do know that there are some DIY vids of getting rid of that barrier on Youtube

The red controller that was released has a better d-pad, but it's still not ideal, I guess.  I'm in the same boat with fighting games.  I like them, but I am completely terrible.  I'm a full-on button-masher.  But, yeah, this problem is really just about the fighting games.

If they would just create a steel/titanium one that can withstand some "accidental" drops at a higher than normal gravitational pull, then I would buy it.

If the D-pad pushes easier for the 1-2 times I need to use it, I'll pass.

My main problem with it is that it's very difficult for me to reach for it and hit it in the correct direction without looking for the controller. That probably is due to lack of practice since it isn't used much, but it always annoys me when I play a game that relies on it. It's the xbox equivalent of hitting the function keys on a keyboard without looking.

Whenever I have to do something on a diagonal (hotkeys in Fallout 3, for example), it never works.

if you have to ask, I have to wonder if you've ever played on the 360 slywink

In any game it had ridiculous trouble figuring out what you were hitting.  Hit up in CoD?  It thinks you hit right.

It's official and it's going to be $64 in a bundle:

I never had an issue with the d-pad, but the new controller looks pretty swank.

So, $65 to buy (as it only comes with the Play and Charge kit 'bundled'), or just get a real and usable D-pad by getting one of the fighting pads that whoever made with Street Fighter characters on them...

Yeah, I'm gonna stick with what I have.

Agreed.  I like having the colors there, especially in situations where there are color-coded quicktime events and such.

What's wrong with the D-Pad?  Is it just not sensitive enough in the mid point directions?

I remember an article a while back comparing the construction of the Xbox d-pad compared to, well, every other controller ever.

For everything but the Xbox controller, the hard plastic piece you touch sits directly on the rubber pad that has the contacts for the breadboard.  You're almost directly touching the rubber contact thingies with your thumb.

With the Xbox controller's d-pad there's this goofy intermediary piece of plastic.  You press the plastic d-pad, which then pushes the weird rocker barrel piece of plastic, which then presses on the rubber contact sheet.  There are mods to help you press down further or make a more solid connection, but really it's the fundamental goofy design of the thing that makes it so imprecise compared to everything else.

edit: This article may be the one I'm remembering.

Don't know why they just didn't give the pad eight spokes, putting little flat spots all the way out on the main directional spokes and flat spots a bit further in towards the hub on the diagonals. You could feel what you are going to press without looking.

does he mean 'that one controller' he has in his hands or the new controller overall?...and they will still be coloured in standard controllers?

well he did say 'this one new controller', which I'm pretty sure means the new one with the new d-pad.

Yeah, my play and charge kit broke so I bought a charge station and I have 3 batteries I rotate through it. I'm not really in the market for a new controller now anyway, but if I was, I would be turned off by fact I couldn't just buy the controller.

What's so funny about a $65 MSRP?  The standard controller has an MSRP of $50, and a Play & Charge Kit is $20, so you're saving $5 with this new super special controller.  Assuming you ignore the fact that you can get controllers for quite a bit less than MSRP.

Like that sale a few days ago with them for $30. $65 means no sale for now. My play & charge is ok for now. I do wish I could find some batteries by themselves though. Mine are getting a bit old.

it's more of a quick glance at the controller to get your bearings.

What's funny is they want me to spend $15 on a play and charge kit that a hate. I guess it gets me another rechargeable battery, but the play and charge side of it is garbage. I find the standalone charger to be far more reliable.

Yup, exactly that.  I have 3 or 4 play and charge kits, gained through various bundles and gifts... and I've not used any of them for more than few minutes.  Two chargers and 6 batteries keep both 360s happy, even when visitors go multi-player.  That begs the question whether the new controller is being bundled - for now at least - to sell the play and charge kits collecting dust in various warehouses.

I would, however, purchase one of the bundles if every problem with the 360 controller was addressed.  I've retired several controllers, mostly due to one button becoming dysfunctional (usually an "alphabet" button, like the A or the Y.)  I have one now that has a B button that sticks - push it and it doesn't reset to the original position for a split second.  I have more than one with an A button that stops "clicking"... it still works, technically - but it is always in the pushed-in mode, so it feels flat and unpredictable.  Fix those problems, MS, and I'll buy your silly bundle!  disgust
