I wonder what the licensing fee is for third parties.  Discounting first-party titles, which have their own associated costs, I wonder how many games each buyer must purchase per unit to reach a break-even point?

the article said microsoft was expecting to start turning a profit by 2007, so it cant be anything too ridiculous (as far as # of games needed to buy).

To hell with them losing $126 on every one sold.  What about how much money they lost for all the ones they gave away in Hollywood and at that TRL taping? Tongue

It was this moment that took the movie from being a little ho-hum to “holy shit, did that shark just eat a plane!?”

Whoa VegasD posted? Holy crap its been a while. As to this news-meh. Sony is likely to absorb a greater loss according to analysts. Hopefully manufacturing will get more affordable soon.

They'll just have to make up for the poor per-unit profit with volume.

Actually almost every console is sold at a lost.

The console is just the vehicle to enable people to buy software and add-ons which is where all the $$ is.

MS makes a killing off of licensing. They are not a multi-billion dollar company for nothing!

If by 'making a killing' you mean losing billions of dollars, then you're right. They  lost up to $4 billion on the first Xbox and Xbox-related sales, and expect to lose money on all 360-related sales through 2007.
