it was totally killing me that i wouldn't be able to make the midnight launch, and now i only wish i had pushed myself out of the door despite the hour long drive, long lines and crappy weather to come in to work late and then fight off sleep until later tonight.

the game sits, sadly unopened in my glovebox and i didn't have to fight anybody off to get it and got it for $50 to boot.  i was tempted by the two other versions, and even saw someone buying the nvg edition, but $30 is a lot to pay just to get cod1, when it's totally likely i wouldn't even finish a play through with it. hell, i even pondered the super deluxe edition, the one with an xbox in it, but the wife would probably use it to bludgeon me into a stupor.

mp. tonight.
can't! freaking! wait!

before i forget

there is a MP level called Wasteland...and fans of Call of Duty 1 may find it familiar,it seems its an updated map(kinda like Chinatown was to Carentan)

now,if you remember the COD1 map, like Wasteland still..it has a rather big hedge going through the middle of the map,and under the hedge is a trench, same as it was in COD1,however in COD1 there were castle ruins and dead cows one one side of the map, they seem to of made way now for a little shanty house and makeshift cemetery(and scrap cars)

oh and for those asking about Hanz Zimmer, the music is pretty damn great

WTF happened to the great singleplayer missions from Modern Warfare 1? They were of the same excellent quality here until the Rio level, where it all went to shit. There are many of the same problems that made CoD:WaW unfun to play (I never finished it because it annoyed me so much). Enemies always know where you are and what you are doing. They can fire at you the exact nanosecond when you're in line of sight from them, and they abuse this by always knowing when you're reloading even if they're not even close to seeing or hearing you. They attack from every direction. You'll die often without even knowing what killed you. Objectives are confusing. Trying to follow orders will get you killed (you keep being told to run, but if you do you get mowed down). I feel like I have to snail my way, inch for inch, picking off enemies one by one and generally killing the pacing of the missions. Meh!

I stopped at the mission after Rio were it kept being pretty bad (but Rio was worse, admittedly). I think I need to cool off a bit with Dragon Age before I start regretting my purchase.

Yeah, but that's pretty much the case for CoD 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Either you accept that and enjoy CoD SP for what it is (as most did with CoD:MW1) or you don't and stick with MP.

It seems like there is no actual enemy AI. They just kind of spawn when you show and then follow scripts until you cross a trigger.  I think it works pretty well if you just play once.  You really notice the problems if you play the levels multiple times.  Luckily I have no plans to do that.

Just to make it clear: I absolutely loved the SP in Modern Warfare 1. Despite the issues with AI and respawning enemies, every single mission in the game was lots of fun. That makes the Rio mission here just so much more disappointing. Hopefully the game just caught me in a bad mood and I'll enjoy it more later.

Why would they fix it when the games have sold a bazillion copies?  People who don't know better just see a great single player story.  Only people who look deeper see the flaws.   And those people probably know what they are getting by now.

The COD games are supposed to be intense, and they do that by having the enemies always pinpoint on your location, and having you pinned down.

It's certainly frustrating, and easy to get wrong (W@W for example), but I have a hard time calling the very essence of COD SP "bad coding".

sounds like some of the flaws of veteran mode snuck into regular this time.  one reviewer said it took him 7 hours on hardened, which is considerably less than it took me through my w@w hardened run and a drop in the bucket compared to my half run of mw1 on veteran, so i'm confident i'll be ok here.

has anyone tried sp on hardened/veteran?  i am curious if they really tweaked it the way they said they would or if you still get 30 enemies at each little checkpoint from their clown car-esque huts and one room buildings.

totally agreed SL.  at least they didn't abuse the doom 3 model of spawning them in behind you every step of the way.

This has nothing to do with bad 'coding'... I'm 99% sure that the game *designers* meant for the campaign to be that way.

Most people love it, so why would they change it?  Obviously not every single person is going to agree on any specific game, but in IW's case the sales seem to support their design philosophy.

Actually, they do. Though not necessarily behind you, but at least in front of you and to your sides. Shut doors or windows will burst open once you pass invisible boundaries, getting you shot before you even have a chance to react unless you know exactly what's coming.

I think I realize now what's bugging me about this game. Modern Warfare 1 had endless spawns until you passed certain points, so the game rewarded you for being heroic and taking chances to push past that point. That actually made the game more fun for me. This game has limited enemies and is paced in such a way that you're actually rewarded for hiding behind cover while your squadmates take care of the opposition.

Hopefully this is just an artifact of these particular few missions. As I said, the first missions were great.

Sure they can, but they don't. Because the design decision they made is to do it this way. Without it, the game wouldn't feel like Call of Duty.

It's the main reason why I didn't like the original COD games, and had a hard time getting excited for COD4. But someone got me the game for my birthday, and the SP in that game was amazing despite having all of those same elements. W@W SP sucked because it had those same elements, but nothing else.

At this point, I know it going in. With W@W, once I realized the SP had no redeeming value, it became something to do only when nobody else was online. With MW2, I think SP is going to stay ignored until a get a weekend or something to just play through it, experience it, and never look at it again.

Hey look... these bunch of panzy douches spend nearly 30 to 40% of this review bashing the politics of the story of the game, then they supposedly set that rant aside to give the game an 8 out of 10.

I really can't stand people that can't put their politics aside.    I'm as right wing as they come, but I enjoy movies starred by or directed by people on the opposite end of the spectrum.   I really don't even think about it much outside of R&P forums.

Played four more hours of MP.  Amazing how much of a fickle bitch MP can be.  Last night I kept a positive K/D ratio throughout the night.  Today?  A number of rounds with one or two kills and six to eight deaths.   disgust  But, then I managed to turn things around and get back to going 12-4, 12-6, 11-5, etc.  Sometimes I just love the MP game, and sometimes it just frustrates me so much I want to throw my controller through the TV.

Although in the past I never stuck with new weapons to unlock attachments and earn experience points.  I'd always go back to the one weapon I felt most comfortable with.  So I guess I can attribute some of my rougher rounds to playing with weapons I wasn't familiar with in an attempt to unlock the red dot sight on the M4 and soon the SCAR.  I'm also only five or six kills away from the ACOG scope for the FAMAS.   drool

I'm doing my best to be patient and work through some of the weapon challenges, but sometimes it is hard.  Especially when you spend most of the game watching the kill cam (I have a lot of those accolades).

I'd play tomorrow, but I think it's tacky to be playing "kill games" on Remembrance Day.

I'm a military brat.  I don't consider it tacky any more than I would watching war movies or the History Channel.  But I respect your thoughts on the matter.  Honor the day as you see fit and thank you for honoring it.
