*mumble grumble buncha slackers*

I plan on getting in some wargaming this evening with friends.

I'm on my own all day tomorrow, and I'm looking at exploring the backlog, but I haven't picked out any targets yet.  I'm engaged with LEGO Marvel, so I may go back to that and get through a few more story missions.

I'm hoping to get the last trophy in Second Son and wrap up Unit 13.  Then, anyone's guess.  More Space Engineers for sure.

Not really sure.  My interest in D3 has taken a nose-dive now that the only thing left to do is run the same bounties and rifts over and over again hoping to get some slightly better gear.  FFX HD hasn't really grabbed me (much to my dismay), and there's nothing else in the way-too-big backlog that is jumping out at me.  I'm actually considering picking up Dark Souls 2, even though overly difficult games aren't typically my thing.  It just looks so damn cool.

The Last Federation, Dark Souls 2 PC, Warframe, BF4 Naval Strike, Titanfall are all possibilities.

Definitely will play a lot of Dark Souls 2 regardless.

At 150 hours on BF4 and no signs of stopping. It may be the best game I've ever played.

The Last Federation is very fun. Has some aspects that are a little rough, but, Arcen is very good about continuing support.

They have already addressed several major things that have improved the game in the first week of release. They are (or did today) add auto-resolve for tactical combat.

Has a Drox feel in that you are in a 4x universe with things going on all the time that you can influence in various ways.

I made an impulse buy on Dark Souls 2 PC due to that GMG code. So I'll add that into my Thief (PS4) and Arkham Origins (PC) rotation.

This is my first real foray into the DS games.  I just spent an hour and 22 deaths just trying to unsuccessfully get past the very first enemy in the game.

Thinking I may have just flushed $40 down the crapper...

If this is a giant one-eyed enemy.... keep going, you don't have to fight him/them. And really shouldn't yet.

The first opponents you fight after choosing your starting looks/etc are very slow, do little damage, and take 2 or 3 hits to kill.

Thanks all.  I somehow missed the tunnel past the first bonfire.  Since there was nowhere else to go, I just figured I had to beat that big Ogre thing to proceed.  So not only did I spend an hour getting my ass kicked by something I shouldn't have been fighting in the first place, but I also missed out on the entire tutorial.   I felt bad ragequitting in the first hour last night, but now I think it's at least justified.

Hopefully this isn't an omen of things to come...

Listen. The whole point of those games is the punishing difficulty. If you're angry now and don't adjust your perceptions you are going to be miserable.  Also, the makers explain nothing so expect to have a walkthrough and FAQ handy at all times.

IkeVandergraaf just finished his DS2 run and absolutely loved the game and it was the first one he played. You may want to PM for n00b tips.

Game Informer has put up two special edition podcasts dedicated to Dark Souls II.  I haven't played the game for myself, but I've listened to them both.  Here's what they sound like:

Quote from: Anyone Talking About Dark Souls II
"Man, I'm getting murdered constantly.  Where can I pick up better weapons?"

"There's a white knight near the beginning who drops a really great sword.  Start with that."

"Oh, I think I already got that and leveled it up at the blacksmi-"

"Oh god!  You leveled it up?"

"Er...yeah."

"Leveling up the White Sword triples the hitpoints for every boss in the game.  You're really going to have grind for souls to power up your character now."

"Wait, you can level up your character?  How?  It isn't in any of the menus!"

"You have to talk to Jamelgema three times.  This will cause a Desecrated Wight to spawn near the third dead end in Blaskberg.  Kill the Wight, pick up the Christened Jade it drops, and return to Jamelgema when your system clock ends in a four.  This will grant you the ability to level up your character."

"Oh."

"If you speak with Jamelgema a fourth time before slaying the Wight, she will be reminded of her dead son Smythe.  This isn't reflected anywhere in her diaglogue, but it curses your character to lose one random attribute point every eighteenth time you swing a weapon."

<sigh>  "Awesome.  Guess I'll have to start over.  Again."

"No no no!  This is actually a good thing because it *also* causes Ebony Salamanders to begin appearing in the Glass Forest.  The Grey Ossuaries they drop are the only way to upgrade your armor past Tier C without invoking the wrath of the Crimson Snipe."

"....what?"

"Why do you think so many players are stricken by Witherot Syndrome after reaching the Hinterland Delta?  Once the Crimson Snipe is on your trail, the only hope is to burn Sage Epiphanies at every bonfire you visited since the last full moon."

And so on.

I am sincerely glad there's an audience for games like Dark Souls II -- it's pretty much the craziest shit happening outside of EVE Online -- but I am definitely not in the target demographic.

Honestly, I'm not the target audience either.  But I have a hard time ignoring a game in a genre I typically enjoy (fantasy RPG) that is getting consistent 90%+ reviews.  Figured I'd give it shot and hope it clicks.  If it doesn't, what's another game to add to the backlog, right?

I very consciously adjusted my paradigm for this game before I even started.  I knew it was difficult and that I would die a lot.  Since I missed the "tutorial tunnel", I just figured that first Ogre enemy was something I was going to have to figure out how to beat.  Did I think it seemed ridiculous?  Absolutely, but I figured that was all just a part of the game.

Spent about 4 hours with Dark Souls 2...enough to confirm my suspicion that it simply isn't a game for me.  I have enough stress IRL, and don't need my hobby (which I'm doing in order to relax) causing my blood pressure to spike and controllers to be thrown.  Glad I at least tried it though, might come back to it someday when the Wonder Twins are a little older.

Tried again to get into FFX HD and it's simply not happening.  I don't know if it's the fact that I've already played it twice or that it hasn't really aged all that well, but I simply find myself bored with it. Which is odd, as I was really looking forward to giving it another shot with this HD release.  Oh well...

Since nothing else was pulling at me, I decided to re-sub to FF XIV for 30 days.  Thought about doing some sub-class levelling on my main (lvl 40 Warrior), but the prospect of grinding levels doing nothing but Levequests just made my head hurt.  Instead, I rolled up an alt to see how I do with a DPS class.  Took an Archer up to 16, and am having a blast with it all over again.
