Gamespot didn't actually mention what year it was coming out... if it is 2007 that's still sometime off.

Still... GTA 4. Wow. I can honestly say I did not see that coming.

Yes, I know, I quoted the same thing. But it doesn't mention what year it is, only October 16.

Still, they generally don't put down such a precise date unless it's coming shortly... so who knows.

They mentioned 'episodic content exclusive to the 360', so I'm guess its still multiplatform, but will probably launch first on the 360 and/or have some 360 specific content.

Regardless of how exclusive it turns out to be, the announcement served its purpose - making the 360 out to be the system to have.

GTA 4 being a 360 exclusive is going to kick ass.  Streaming my own tunes while I commit wanton destruction is going to kick ass.

IGN says it's 2007, episodic download content, and maybe not an exclusive. (GTA4)

Is the Halo 3 trailer up anywhere online? I don't have a 360 yet...

Live Anywhere sounds neat. PC Games really needed that. I just hope it doesn't cost, or if it costs it's worth the cost

I feel more than a little sorry for Sony.  While MS is delivering the second generation of their games and Nintendo has the innovative gameplay of the Wii, Sony has...old school Ridge Racer?  I'm really interested to see how everything plays out come the end of the year.

and they wouldn't be able to claim it as an exclusive anymore...it's more of a loss than something for them to brag about this time.

in other news...it sucks that the MS event is the only one you couldn't watch live for free.  Gamespot is making non-subscribers wait until 5:30EDT (a little over an hour away yet) before you can check it out :x

Announcing it first yesterday would have been fine for Sony I think, and got people excited for it, and stole the 360's announcement ("and we also have it...")

I'm amazed how quickly everyone is jumping off Sony's bandwagon smile.  Sony is still on top.

Gears of War just looks ehh to me.  Another gory shooter.  We haven't seen that before...

Forza 2 with a wireless wheel, now that could be fun...  Any pictures of the wheel?  How big is it?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not jumping off Sony's bandwagon at all.  I <3 Sony.  I just recently bought a PSP for the second time.  They're awesome in my book.  It's just that Microsoft and Nintendo to me have had way better press conferences/information thus far.  With Nintendo I was intrigued.  Microsoft I was excited/shocked.  With Sony I was a little disappointed.

Now THAT'S a great conference!  I hope Sony took notes...10 minutes of Gran Turismo HD?  Not so exciting.  This conference had totally out-of-left-field announcements and really great stuff.

I've always been sort of ho-hum about Gears of War, but it looks fantastic.

Microsoft hit the ball out of the park.  Aside from MGS4 from Sony, the idea of fun games from Wii and cool-looking DS games from Nintendo (even a sequel to Ouendan!), they had nothing compared to Microsoft, thus far.

What Microsoft exclusives are going to be good, besides FPS games?  Forza 2 and what?  Is Microsoft bring anything else exciting to the table?  And I'm not sure Fable 2 counts until its actually delivered and lives up to the hype smile.

Any big Japanese dev houses developing 360 exclusive stuff, or just the fringe houses?  It seems that the Japenese developed XBox/360 titles are poor imitaitons of the ones done for Sony or Nintendo.  (And I think Dead or Alive is a poor imitation of Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur).

I want to be wrong, but if all Microsoft did was say:
"We have more kick ass FPS type games, Forza 2 (and some other games that also run on the PS3 like GTA 4)"  As disappointing as Sony was, did Microsoft really expand their software base, or diversify more?

Scott, between the new Live Arcade games, Live Anywhere, Fable 2, Forza 2, Halo 3, Gears of War, Alan Wake, Madden annoucement, GTA 4 annoucement, their Jap game annoucements, the 360 video camera, and the HD-DVD drive annoucement.... I think they pretty much overcame Sony on "content" as well. In fact - what did Sony even show, again?

I guess I'm not impressed, at all.  Maybe its because I haven't watched the live feeds off the conferences, so I'm not feeling the hype.

What I do know though, is that Sony has a pretty impressive list of exclusives, across a lot of genres.  Microsoft has some great shooters, but really beyond that is inferior to Sony.  Maybe I'm wrong here, but I'm not sure that Microsoft can compete in the sports, rpg, adventure, platform, kids, or strategy genres.

So, in my mind, Microsoft really had to come out and show they are expanding their software library beyond what they do well, which is FPS and FPS like action games.

Announcing that Microsoft will have Madden (so will Sony) and GTA 4 (so will Sony), or Forza 2 (Sony has the better known GTA), a camera (the PS2 has had one for a long time), HD-DVD (Sony has blue-ray built in), or some FPS games (yay, we know Microsoft does well here); just doesn't impress me.

Where has Microsoft cut into Sony's game lineup?  In the end, you play the games, console be dammed.  Isn't that what Nintendo supporters have said for years, its about the games?  Where is Microsoft moving on this?

And the Live Arcade rocks, but, I don't think its a system seller.  A fun diversion yeah, but oh boy, Lumines (a 2 year old Sony game) coming to Live isn't so exciting.

Is the camera going to be enabled for XBox live games?  If so, everyone will have easy access to child porn

I like how you are skipping the part about how MS is delivering 2nd generation games this fall while Sony delivers it's first on systems that are not all that much different in terms of power.  Oh, and there's that part where THE PS3 COSTS $200 MORE.

Name recognition aside with GT/Forza... your argument is interesting...especially considering a majority of the exclusives you mentioned for the PS were platformers.  So it is bad that MS excells at FPS/Action games but good that Sony excels at platformers?  Sony's exclusives aren't all that much more diverse than MS's.  Microsoft is getting quite a few good RPG's this time around, with Enchant Arm, Oblivion, Fable 2, the new bioware RPG, among others.  Are they Final Fantasy... no they are not, and thank god as I am sick of final fantasy.  They are getting Viva Pinata which will most likely be huge.

Sony has lost the exclusive rights to GTA, they no longer exclusively have the rights to the best current gen wrestling game in Smackdown vs. Raw.

Sony has blu ray built in... whoopity do, it is only true HD if you buy the premium version.

Yeah, I think that was Sony's rationale for not mentioning it since simultaneous multiplatform does count as a "loss".  However, I'm guessing Sony didn't think Peter Moore would come out and brag about getting it first which, if the press release is to be believed, is an outright falsehood.  At this point I'm sure Sony wishes they had mentioned it in some form just so that rumor couldn't have been started.

Did you watch the Sony conference?  If they've got an impressive list of exclusives, the stuff they showed yeseterday wasn't it.  I wasn't impressed aside from MGS4 (a given) and Heavenly Sword.  Everything else was unimpressive and in some cases (Tekken, I'm looking at you) just plain embarassing.

How can MS not compete in sports?  Everything, for the most part that matters, is multi-platform.  If the PS3 IS indeed more powerful, it'll probably show in 2-3 years time.

I'll give you platform.  The Sony-exclusive companies create great platform games.

Not sure about the strategy genre argument.  Sony's got Nippon Ichi.  What else is there?

And adventure games?  I can't really think of one adventure game that the PS2 had.  I can think of several for the Xbox.  Who cares about adventure games anyways.

Lumines isn't your normal puzzle game.  It's heralded as one of the best puzzles games EVER.  My brother got it and I'm playing it after not playing it for a year and I'm loving it.  It's an instant-purchase on Arcade for me.  Plus, I'd imagine scoreboards, so that's exciting in itself.

JRPGs and Western RPGs are pretty much entirely different genres.  I love both but for someone specifically asking for JRPG support you can't point them to Obivion, Fable, Mass Effect, etc.  EM is the only one on your list that qualifies but it's hardly a system seller- reviews for the Japanese version were decent but not great.  Hopefully, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssee deliver but, at this point, MS isn't seeing a whole lot of support from JRPG devs that they haven't funded themseleves.

If Sony fails, I don't think you are going to see a JRPG dev support  shift to the 360, which is pretty much DOA at this point in Japan.  Instead, you'll probably see most of those devs shift to the Wii which stands to benefit much more from Sony's stumblings than MS in Japan.

I like how you are skipping the part about how MS is delivering 2nd generation games this fall while Sony delivers it's first on systems that are not all that much different in terms of power. Oh, and there's that part where THE PS3 COSTS $200 MORE.

People will buy the PS3 at $200 more to play the games, and because Sony and the Playstation brand is much larger then the XBox one.   What's your point about the 2nd vs 1st generation games?  The quality of the games will matter, and only time will tell as to which is better.  A lot of the 2nd generation games will be ported to the PS3, like Madden, GTA, etc, so there shouldn't be any differences.

I was just wanting more out of Microsoft.  There are people out there that aren't fond of FPS games, and would rather play RPGs, platformers, and some of the other genres Sony shines in, and they'll wait for the PS3, or a price drop, and then buy it.

I guess I was hoping for a reason to not buy a PS3, but Sly, MLB 2007, the RPGs and strategy games and some other fun Sony things will pull me over to it, and possibly retire my 360 if Sony is more powerful.  That means Microsoft's loss.

How can MS not compete in sports? Everything, for the most part that matters, is multi-platform. If the PS3 IS indeed more powerful, it'll probably show in 2-3 years time.

Sony's in house sports games, like MLB, kick the crap out of Microsoft's lineup.  If you're a sports gamer now, you buy a Sony, at least if you care about baseball.  Last I knew, baseball was still a somewhat popular sport.

your argument is interesting...especially considering a majority of the exclusives you mentioned for the PS were platformers.

There are other Sony games too, those were just the ones I could think of.

Or real porn.

If the camera stuff is really enabled for games, I'd ban my kids from XBox Live immediately now.  Who wants to watch live video feeds of sexual predators while playing Ghost Recon, or who wants their kids to?

Hopefully the camera isn't enabled though.

Did you watch the Sony conference? If they've got an impressive list of exclusives, the stuff they showed yeseterday wasn't it.

So all those great Sony games like Ratchet and Clank aren't coming to the PS3?  Who cares if they were announced at E3?

Sony still is the #1 player.  Microsoft is the one that needs to blow people away at these things as Microsoft doesn't have the name recogntion that Playstation does.  Sony can do what they want.  Sony will sell out all there shipements for a while, and then can really kick in next E3 or next spring without a problem.
