Sony’s cutting the price on the PlayStation 3. How will Microsoft react? We’ll find out soon. But a key part of the strategy is going to be a project code-named Falcon.

Falcon is the name for the latest internal electronics in the Xbox 360. It will have an IBM microprocessor and an AMD/ATI graphics chip that are manufactured in a 65-nanometer production process. These are cost-reduced chips that do the same thing as their 90-nanometer predecessors, but they’re smaller.

With smaller chips, Microsoft gets a bunch of benefits. They won’t generate as much heat. So the risks of overheating — one of the main reasons behind Microsoft’s billion-dollar write-off for repairs and extended warranties — are much lower. The chips may also cost half of what it took to make them before because they use less material and fewer manufacturing steps to produce.

Interesting article.  How many want to swap their current 360's for the retooled version?

I will be holding out and hoping that I can trade in my current 360 for a new one....My system was being stupid today and almost went back to the store.  If it survives long enough I might see if I can use my BB warrenty to upgrade to the new system

Is there anyone who would answer no to that question?  icon_cool Mine has been fine for well over a year now, but if the terms were right, of course I'd jump over to the new hotness.

I think I'm just going to attempt to set mine ablaze (internally) again.

I'd prefer to keep my 2 current 360's.  They cut down on the cost of heating my basement in the winter drastically.

I'll probably move my current 360 to the bedroom for media center extender duty, and get a new model for the game room.

You know what is really sad about this article.....WE HAVE KNOWN THEY WERE DOING THIS FOR MONTHS...we have all been talking about the new processor and everything else.  I don't know why Microsoft is trying to keep a lid on this anymore.....

I'm getting disk read errors.  Is that a sign of the 360 Apocalypse?  Made me lose 40 minutes of Marvel last night.  icon_mad  If it's dying, I'll exchange it.

Because if MS comes out and announces that there's a new design in the works, a design that should reduce the system's heat perphaps reducing malfunction (and possibly with a price drop), who's going to buy an "old version" 360 now?

I am turning mine on and not turning if off til I see red.  Seriously.  I fully intend to trash this thing and make them replace it for a new system while I am in that 3 year window.  Guaranteed.  I don't care if this whole debacle costs them 500 billion dollars.  This whole heat thing should have been found early on in testing.  I mean, shit, didn't they run the things for more than 15 minutes before they started selling them?!

Screw em.  I am getting a new model out of them free.  You can bet your ass on that!  If anyone here works for them, you can go tell em for me to get mine ready cuz my old one is getting hotter and hotter even as we speak.

Geez.  I think I need to cut back on the coffee.  Kind of lost it there for a second.  Seriously, though, one way or another MS will pay for my Falcon.

Mike, I wouldn't expect them to send you a brand new model.  They'll most likely just send you a refurbished one of the older style if they can't fix yours.  Then you have to deal with all that time of sending it back and waiting and talking to morons on the phone...not worth it.

With the new 3 year warranty, I won't run out and buy a new model.  My launch model has been problem free so far, and knowing MS will replace it on their dime, I couldn't justify the cost.

My thinking as well, but do keep in mind that the RROD aren't the only things sending 360s back in coffins.

A friend just had the optical drive go bad on his 360 but didn't get the RRoD.  He was outside the one year warranty and into 3 year RRoD territory but they were nice and said they'd ship and repair it for free since it would be his first time sending it in.  So even if you don't get the rings it's worth it to try calling them.
