what is it with these awesome looking FPSs coming out of Russia?  this one gives me a big STALKER vibe during the underground scene, which is good, and it's also based off a Russian novel.  it definitely looks like I won't be going wrong grabbing a new PC early next year.

a preview from IGN.   and about that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. vibe?

Quote
Watching the demo segments, I couldn't help but be struck by the similarity of Metro to S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which wasn't much of a stretch, as I was told that a number of team members from 4A had worked on that apocalyptic Russian shooter as well.

Looks good but it sounds like it's a more linear game than STALKER unfortunately.

Stalker was pretty linear, it just did a good job of providing the illusion of free roaming.

IGN has a hands on preview.  sounds like it may be a bit too heavily scripted for now, but hopefully that will change.

Wow, I had no idea this was coming so soon.  Most of the time when you first hear about a game these days it is still at least a year from release, and then another 6 months for a delay.

Too bad no demo, though.  I'll be waiting on reviews.

that kinda stinks, maybe someone will find a way to fix that.  far Cry was originally checkpoint driven and someone 'hacked' it to figure out how to make it save anywhere (they also patched it in).  I just read it's going to be a Steamworks game on the PC too.

My review is for the 360 version.  Some of the stuff that I ran into, I doubt you'll see on the PC.   Either way, here is my review:  http://www.gamingtrend.com/Reviews/review/review.php?ReviewID=1392

I am confused... Looking at the review, it seems that there are some serious coding/gameplay issues. Why wouldn't these be on the PC?

Well, the saving portion anyway.  I haven't seen the animations on the PC, so those might be fixed too - sacrifice for porting it to the Xbox 360.  You are right though - some of the other stuff will stay regardless.

*Cries*

D/led it. Installed it. Ran it...

Messed a bit with the graphical settings to make it look sexier, asked for a restart, did that (Game, Steam and PC, in that order) and the game ALWAYS stops working in the THQ logo (after the blast and the roaches wandering around). Always. I've tried doing all sorts of stuff from the Steam forums (including deleting files, moving files, uninstalling/reinstalling, etc...), but so far....nyet.

My rig is Windows 7 64-bit, 6 ddr2 gigs, 2.53 GHz dual-core, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 and so on, so forth....oh Lord...I want to play it...HELP!!!

I'm having the same issues.  everything was fine until I tweaked the settings and now it gets to the THQ logo and crashes.  I tried deleting the user.cfg file but there must be another one hidden somewhere.

I just saw this tidbit in the steam forums in this thread

Quote
There is two user.cfg

One is located in your:
appdata/local/4agames/metro2033

The other is in your steam folder under: userdata/*youraccountnumber*/43110/remote

If you want to tweak any setting under this you will need to edit one, save it, and then copy it over the other.

There is a third in the metro 2033 directory but it is not used.

Hope it helps.

OK, got it running by upgrading my nVidia drivers to 196.21.  holy hell this game is beautiful.

thanks for the tip Tscott, I'll have to check and see if I can enable vsync in the game or if I'll have to force it via the control panel.

This is why I wanted it... I'm a graphics whore....but I have recently decided that I need to be able to enjoy playing the game as well... super snipers and buggy shooting as mentioned in KD's review have me worried....

Is it present in the PC version? How about the animation issues?

I haven't gotten very far, by the time I got it running it was time for bed.  I did play through the prologue and I have to agree with the reviews that the weapons seem to lack an 'oomph' to them.  haven't noticed any animation issues, but that could be due to me going wide eyed over all the other graphics.

Crap! gogamer cancelled my preorder. Oh wait, that turns out to be good. How the hell do they have a preorder sale for $42.95 and then when the game hits the street it goes on sale for $35.42. That's nuts. Plus, I wanted to get Dead Space and now I can on the same order. No problem getting the imported edition of Dead Space, is there? In this case having my updated cc not matching the exp date they have on file will save me 7 bucks but I will have to wait a day longer. Please keep your reports on Metro coming and I will live vicareously until the mailman comes.

I may get in some more time tonight, but it's St. Patty's Day so I might get sidetracked  icon_mrgreen

[edit] forgot to mention I tried taking some screenshots with FRAPS and it didn't seem to work.

[edit 2] also, there is indeed no save anywhere option, or at least one that I can find.  I think I Greg posted something about that earlier so it's no surprise to me but others may have missed it.

Picked up the Windows version, no clue that it "associates" itself with Steam. Not a biggie, just didn't know it was going to do that. Bigger deal is the fact that I have Vista Home Premium 32bit with DX11, a GTX260 and the latest 196.21 drivers that support DX11 and yet it does two annoying things:

1. Every time I start the game, I get an error box that tells me "D3D: Your NVIDIA video driver needs to be upgraded - system can be unstable!" and then it helpfully tells me where I can download them from. Each time I have to acknowledge this message to start the game. WTF?

2. I can only select DX9 or DX10 in the options menu, DX11 remains disabled. Why would that be? Am I missing something?  icon_confused

Note I haven't tried to check any sort of "official forum" for this yet, just ran into it and well you know, posted here.  icon_wink

quick answers:

1: it does that for everyone, apparently the optimal drivers were the nVidia ones that got pulled for bad fan control.
2: no nVidia card supports DX11 yet.
