Matt Peckham seems to like to go against the prevailing opinion with most of his reviews.

Yeah, he was the guy who wrote the NWN2 review that GFW pulled last year.

I really would not dignify the paltry few paragraphs he strung together by calling them a review, but seriously-there are hacks in every profession. This man demonstrated he was one at 1up, and it culminated with the NWN2 fiasco. He apparently has moved on, but he remains a hack.

Yuppers. And stores pretty much EVERYWHERE have had the game for days. Why the K-Mart fiasco happened.

So despite the fact that I have the limited edition coming in the mail today, I got a call from Aeris last night.  Which means that at some point in the three years that ME has been announced, I decided to preorder.  Of course with a million stores in my area, I have zero idea where so somewhere out there is a Gamestop with $5.00 of my money I'll never get back...

That is the ship date.  The actual arrival in stores is the 21st.  Although, I believe Gamestop is releasing it today because the street date was already broken.

Not in this case, as Destructor was alluding to.  Game already shipped.  *Everyone* has it in stock today.  All of the major big box retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City) are advertising in store Tuesday.

OMG!  I'm only an hour and a half away from getting this!  I just watched the Gametrailers review in HD and icon_eek!  I CAN'T WAIT!  IT'S KILLING ME!  I plan on reading the manual this afternoon at work.  Since I spent over 200 hours playing each of the KOTORs (100+ each), I can easily see several magnitudes above that for this game.

Does anyone else have goosebumps and all geeked out ready for this epic universe spanning game???

I can hardly control my excitement.  I am literally shivering with anticipation!  drool  I just feel like I'm going to bust!

Shifty, you should probably know...

We are all making side bets as to whether or not you are going to make a standard male avatar so you can tell all the female characters to go F*** themselves, since marriage is the "biggest female scam in the universe"; or if you're going with the standard Shifty female Alicia-type character in order to engage in a potential lesbian relationship.

The votes are coming in 50/50 right about now.

hmmm.. OK, combat isn't as clunky as I thought it would be.  The texture pop up is kind of annoying though.  I'm having a hard time deciding whether to finish AC or continue on with this though, which I wasn't expecting.

As tempting as the lesbian relationship is (still dreaming of an Alicia/Lara Croft passionate kiss or Skylanders former blonde avatar making out with Alicia), I will more than likely go with the male avatar.  My female avatar is waiting for a KOTOR 3 ( icon_lol).  The reason being that I usually picture myself as the main lead character in the game.  I project myself into the game, hence the male avatar.  And believe it or not, I don't hate on women in games.  Actually, I (as the in game character) enjoy falling for a female character in a game (i.e., Bastilla in KOTOR 1 & Visus in KOTOR 2).  Mind you this is "in character" and not my real self you weirdo's.  At least in games, for the most part, the women can't rip your heart out like in real life and if they start to do it's just a simple press of the power button and their gone.   nod

It's a positive- I wasn't expecting to be sucked in so quickly.  Of course I had my first crash last night as I went to save after going through the Presidium and gathering all the info there, and had to go through everything again  disgust

after playing around with the character creation for about an hour I went with a femal avatar, a redheaded ruthless bitch infiltrator with ruby red lip stick named Jenna.

I've put about 6 hours into the game.  The first 2 were fun but underwhelming, the next 2 were largely a frustrating disappointment for me, and it clicked during the final 2.  A few simple thoughts:

- Bioware knows how to write a good story and integrate it into a game.  I'm very happy with the story and look forward to playing through it.

- Maybe the frame rates and texture draw-in aren't that big of a deal, but seriously guys: the technology is a disappointment.  Recent experiences with Bioshock and Assassin's Creed may have spoiled me because those games seem to handle graphics that are on par with these without any of the heinous loading/draw-in/etc...  The amount of dialogue is high, allowing for quiet times in the game, during which I am acutely aware of the loud noises my 360 makes.  Honestly, I think Bioware should have done a better job with the tech.  The biggest problem with the draw-in and loading is that is breaks the immersion (for me, at least).

- Combat is ok - nothing special.  I have yet to really funny comprehend when and how to best use the talents of people on my team.  Somebody ALWAYS gets knocked out.  Forcing me to wait between heals irritates me.

Overall, I think the story will negate the technology issues but I'm afraid that I will always be left with the feeling that this really good game could have been a really great game.

p.s.  I wish that companies that develop good technology would do joint productions with companies that develop good stories.

About the only thing keeping me playing is the story and character interactions. The combat is a drag, so are the items.  I've turned combat down to casual so I can burn through it quickly.  Also, either I've gimped my character or the difficulty is just screwy because I keep hitting segments where my party just gets wiped out within seconds unless I do something gamey.

Why oh why did they remove the external orders system?

You liked Advent Rising???  I thought I was the only one.  That game was awesome.  Too bad we will never experience the rest of that trilogy.  AR was my Game of the Year for 2005.

If ME has that AR vibe than I'm even more excited.  I have not even started ME yet.  I'm still preparing myself by studying the character creation stuff from the strategy guide.  I will most likely be firing it up Friday night and playing through the weekend.

i loved it too, and yeah, i'm disappointed we'll never get the rest of the story.

I ran into my first difficult combat tonight- it was only 2 guys but for some reason they kept on kicking my arse, and I'm still early in the game.  They made the sniper rifle a bit too difficult to use, especially since it is  the Infiltrator class' primary weapon.

I found out that the sniper rifle has two levels of zoom. Hold LT to use the standard zoom you get on all weapons, and then push in the right thumbstick to get the second level. It seems to stabilize the drift a bit as well.

And personally, I think they got the sniper rifle spot on - it's supposed to be next to useless at close range. You can't fire at all from the hip (as in real life), and if they get too close, you'll zoom right past them. That said - it's VERY powerful at long range engagements (like against other snipers or rocket troops). Normally it's a one shot kill.

I didn't realize there was a second level- that may make it a bit easier to use.  the first level weaves around too much and there's no way to stabilize it like holding your breath or even setting it down on cover.

Re: sniper:

If you use the assassinate skill, it locks the view down completely.

Also, the game doesn't model positional damage so the key is just shooting *any* part of someone.

I must have that book...

The cover reminds me of Syd Mead's work, I wonder if he was contracted to the concept art at some point.

Too bad Bioware couldn't have sold it in stores - I would've gladly tossed them the money.

And more things about the Sniper Rifle - the higher accuracy weapons really help out your aim. Although for the most part I'm sticking with the tried and true pistola of doom. Does more than enough damage (found a 168 damage one, just minutes after I purchased one for myself) for my needs.

Random thought - rocket based enemies are DEADLY. Even Wrex (with his ~300HP plus heavy armor plus 200 shields) tends to get one-shotted by them. Whenever you face them, I highly recommend just using your powers like mad to make sure they never shoot at you.

I'm now at 20 hours and STILL haven't touched the main quest short of getting my 6th teammate. Too many other quests that keep popping up.

Re: sniper:

If you use the assassinate skill, it locks the view down completely.

Also, the game doesn't model positional damage so the key is just shooting *any* part of someone.

sweet!  I think I'm one level from getting that skill (and I'm still in the Citadel running around- Jeebus that place is huge!)
