Hi-

No offense to MikeG, but I just got the game and I'm not going to stumble into a 5 page thread for fear of spoilers, so I thought I'd start a new thread for those of us just getting the game.

I have opened the box and the manual smells like heaven.

FWIW, I don't recall any spoilers at all in MikeG's thread.  So if you should be able to safely read it if you wish.

That was a pre-release lucky bastards discussion. This is the impressions thread for us common folk and I fully support and endorse its existence.

Now it's time to put on my pants and go pick up my copy of Mass Effect. Or perhaps I'll attempt it sans pants.

So at this point we only have two impressions threads, a "bugs" thread and the 18 page pre-release thread?

Times like these I miss Hetz.

And this thread is lame.  At least put a picture of Jade Raymond in your first post or something.

Well those of you who avoided the multi-page K-Mart broke street date thread don't realize that it's been revealed within there that Mass Effect doesn't really exist. It was all a hoax put on by Bioware. They reallocated the entire Mass Effect team to work on the much more anticipated Sonic RPG for the DS. Sorry!

It won't be complete until we have at least 3 separate ME caused the RRoD threads too. smile And within each of those threads someone will comment on how you should have bought your 360 at Costco.

Went to Best Buy on my lunch hour and they didn't have any out on the floor - they still had the pre-order boxes.    crybaby

The lady saw me looking crushed and I asked her if they had any copies of Mass Effect.  She said "Sure I'll get one from the back."  3 minutes later she returned with my copy, smiling like a radiant angel.

I took it back to my office and opened it up.  I tried to remove that metallic anti-theft sticky thing behind the manual (after all I bought the damn thing with my hard earned money) and one of the metal wires came loose and stuck into my thumb!  So now Mass Effect has cost me blood, sweat and (almost) tears.

i will be getting it on my release day,friday...that way i can spend all friday and the weekend(which Friday kinda like is the weekend)playing the game....having a release on a tuesday is crazy as shit...middle of the working/schooling week!!...Aussies got it last week for some bullshit reason!!

anyway,i was looking at the achievements for the game(from JuniorDans profile page,as i saw him playing it)...and saw that they look kinda lame(kill 75 of this using this weapon, finish the game in this difficulty, and that difficulty etc)...so i think i will skip concentrating on them and just enjoy the story(unlike orange box)

of course, i wouldn't have walked out with rock band too, but that's another story.

wife ok'ed it, and i am going to be sans presents until next christmas.  hooray for me.

oh, and the manual looks nice.

Whats the native setting for this game anyone know? 720? or 1080?
On my way to pick up a copy at Block-Buster.......I figure from what I've been reading I wont need more than a week of play time to finish it.

If it has huge replayability I might buy it.

Speaking of the manual...

QT3 has started a thread on tips to make the game a bit less unclear since the manual is a bit sparse.

So far it's spoiler free, if you want to check it out :  LINK

Then again, I suppose we could always start our own...

One hour and a half in...

Not very impressed.  My squad did okay in the first few skirmishes, but now that we're actually fighting formidible opponents, they're either:

A) Not attacking.
B) When I tell them to attack a target, they stand in the middle of an area, shooting one enemy when there's a few more just nailing them from all over and they die.

And when I heal, I can't heal again until it cools down.

And why can't I zoom in with my weapon when low on health?

Maybe I just need more time to warm up to the combat...

The film grain effect makes the game look great.  Without it, it looks really unspectacular.  The pop-up and texture altering (whatever the technical term is) is distracting.

Played it a bit more and....I don't know.  I'll have to play it some more, I guess.

Oh, and major gripe; the inventory/equipment screen is f'n garbage.  Hard to navigate, confusing...and no way to see if you can upgrade something until you try to upgrade it.  Plus, when you get stuff out of containers, you take all or convert to some gel that opens boxes.

I hate how it's all text based and doesn't give you any sense of how good a weapon is.  It's like, I have no idea what this crap is!

Wow - the facial movements are just amazing.  From little things like someone moving their eyes to look over at someone without turning their head to big things like being able to see the surprise and fear on a character's face are far beyond anything I've seen before, especially when coupled with the great voice acting.  I can't wait to see how the big emotional scenes later in the game play out.

Start to crate time for Mass Effect is 39 minutes.

Quote
Games can be rated and compared based on the shortest amount of time it takes a player to reach the first crate, which represents the point where the developers ran out of ideas.  This number is measured in seconds and is called "Start to Crate" or "StC".  The smaller the StC, the worse the game.

Not promising....

I'm just poking around at the beginning but it seems cool so far. A little clunky in places but the cinematic presentation and dialogue system are very nice.

It seems pretty nice to me.  The art book is nice but nothing fancy (not hardbound or anything) and the Codex does seem to have some really useful information the world background.  Haven't checked out any of the documentaries or anything yet.

I'm warming up to it...slightly.

The cover system is weird.  It's hard to tell when you're getting hit and where you're getting hit from.

When the game goes into the cinematic mode (no, not when characters are speaking to each other), the game shines.  It looks like a sci-fi movie.

I'm regretting the fact that I chose a class without any biotic powers; I have my squad use them whenever power becuase they seem to be quite powerful (and much cooler than my sniper rifle, WHICH, no matter what kind of sniper rifle I equip, it makes the same noise and is sorta weak looking and sounding).

Again, I guess I need to give it more time.

I haven't put more than a few hours into the game but the main thing I don't like are the controls. After all these years of gaming in 3D, do we really still have to deal with clunky control schemes like this? Beyond that, the graphics are impressive and disappointing at the same time. The character models are really good, and there is a lot of detail in the faces, however all the graphical complaints that have been pointed out before are certainly valid. I noticed the framerate wasn't smooth within the first 30 seconds of taking control of my character. The music is really good and the game feels immersive so far, but I keep finding myself wishing I was playing ME using Oblivion's 3D engine, the environments wereso much sharper.

I started out with a rather hot female character but I have trouble feeling the weight of her importance in each scene so I'm going to start over with a male character. I'm looking forward to putting a good amount of time into ME over the holiday weekend.
