You can supposedly also save time by looking at the type of planet and scanning accordingly. For example, a rocky planet with plenty of asteroid impact craters is likely to have almost all its valuable resources in or next to the craters. A previously inhabited planet is likely to have its resources in the habitable zones. You get the point.

Well, I found the first real bad part of the game, which I think I had heard about, which is the resource gathering. This was their solution to the Mako hunts? Did they playtest it? Talk about a buzzkill.

I also added some sort of upgrade that was supposed to make the probing faster, but I haven't seen any difference. Does it get less obnoxious as they game goes on? I did it for longer than 15 minutes and I only have around 15K platinum. These scars aren't going to heal themselves!

First off, the mining upgrade makes your scanner go twice as fast - surely you must have noticed this?

secondly - 15 minutes??? How on earth can you mine for 15 minutes and only get 15 platinum? normally a planet with upgraded scanners take what, 3 minutes tops?

Not really, but with the upgraded scanner, 15 minutes should give you a LOT of ore

I don't think I ever found more than 15,000 of anything on any given planet.  even the really big spikes were usually 1500 to 2000, and there weren't a lot of those.  that said, suually once I was done finding big spikes I moved on.

perhaps Teggy spent 15 minutes probing Uranus.

I just the think whole scanning thing is a wasted opportunity.  They could have put min-anomalies on a few planets in each solar system so that while scanning them, you'd find little bits of money, interesting story elements, all just little bits of text and graphics to reward players for taking a look, rather than forcing them to mine for minerals just to upgrade.

Does it just move a little faster along the surface while you're not pressing the left trigger? To be honest, I didn't notice a big difference. Especially since it slows down a lot when you press the left trigger.

Yes, this has been my experience. I've also mostly found palladium and iridium so far.

Try starting a new game, or find an earlier savegame where you have the old scanner if possible...you'll scream in frustration then ;-) It moves faster when you hold down the scanbutton yes.

Hmm, well - I just think it sounded like a lot of time spent on getting not that much..but then again, its been a month or so since I tried the game myself last, so I could be wrong.

Strangely, at the end I found it a relaxing thing to do, something to do between crazy firefights and saving the galaxy :-)

Teggy, the best way to do it is to scroll around tapping the LB (or whatever is scan). Just keep tapping the button as you can quickly around the planet. When you hit something that makes the meter blip, stop to search a sec and scoop those minerals. Then continue scanning. I wouldn't bother mining anything other than "rich" and those I'd only mine til "moderate". Past that point I felt like was a waste of time (moreso than mining in and of itself)

This is basically what I have been doing. Well, the first part - does each part of the planet have a different rating? I have been swooping in, and if I see "poor" or "moderate", I just leave. Does the rating depend on what part of the planet you are looking at or is it describe the planet as a whole?

Its the planet, and it changes as you mine it. Bear in mind though, that even poor or the one where they say there is no ore left, can have major spikes, and often do, especially in the Element Zero catagory.

Has anyone been reading the comics? I have read the 2 novels (which are nothing special, if you are curious, but fun in the sense that they let you spend some additional time in the game world and fill in some holes) and will read the one coming this summer, so I figured I'd spend the $4 on iTunes it will take to see the story. I kind of wish they had done the whole series prior to the game coming out, although I'm guessing that what we find out in issue 4 is something I will learn during the game.

I enjoyed the mining, for the record. Sometimes monotonous portions of a game can be a relaxing break from all the action.

So I got my copy back the other day after lending it to a friend to play the Kasumi DLC mission. It was decent, nothing spectacular. I also downloaded the Firewalker pack, but didn't see where to access these missions? I loaded a save I made after completing the game but didn't see any new journal entries. I heard it was only playable when starting a completely brand new story?

The Hammerhead is immediately available when installed, even on already existing or completed games. You should receive a message on your terminal about where to pick it up. If you didn't, you probably didn't install the DLC correctly.

Oh, the Hammerhead is not part of the normal storyline? I installed that DLC before I started playing.  When I went and picked it up, I assumed it was like the new Mako.  I do have "Firewalker" missions scattered around one galaxy.

I bought the DLC and have recruited- as far as I can tell- every crew member, but there is still one more slot available.  Is this for later DLC or something to be revealed later?

pretty boring stuff... Not sure what I expected from DLC in the game, but this is pretty much not worth anything. I doubt most people, who have played the game, are that interested in new weapons. We want more adventure, dammit!

Not to mention several much larger FREE DLC packs containing a new crewmate that integrates fully into the campaign with his own interesting lines, a new vehicle, several weapons and armor bits, etc.

Sorry, but they've shown plenty of good support so far, even if these latest few $2 packs are kind of pointless.  If they packed these smaller, and less interesting DLC into a larger and relatively cheaper package, I'd consider getting it to support further DLC like Kasumi's pack.

Comparing Bioware to Valve (a company that has an entirely separate major revenue stream in Steam) is an apples to oranges comparison and means nothing.

Also, why exactly should these weapons and armor packs be free? Oh, and say "Hi" to the Bioware rep standing next to you with a gun to your head.

Question:

I've got all my crew and all systems are 100% explored.  After you jump through the Omega 4 Relay, is that pretty much it? Are there more opportunities to earn XP?

I'm at level 28 (with an imported character) and as far as I can tell I've done every mission possible (including DLC). Not sure how anyone reaches 30 if the answer is no...unless I missed something heyooge.
