This game looks like lots of fun. I love the new graphics (I wasn't a fan of the cell shading on XMen Legends) and it has a killer cast of characters. It's coming out on every system imaginable today (PS3 and Wii versions will be out next month). The next gen versions have 2 exclusive characters (Colossus and Moon Knight) and the PSP has four (Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, Ronin and Black Widow).

So, what version are you getting? Anyone have it yet? Toys R Us was selling the game yesterday.

I am debating on which version to get (either Wii or 360), but I won't be getting it until at least the Wii launch or after. That will give me time to figure out if it is worth it or not.

I picked it up for the 360 yesterday at Toys R Us with Ace Combat X and Magical Starsign as part of the buy 2 get 1 free deal (I mentioned elsewhere that my TRU sometimes gets games before EBs).  I played through the helicarrier level.  Graphics are pretty good, there's a lot going on, certainly, but they also aren't as fun as the X-Men games (I liked the cel-shading) and feel more gritty and real.  That wouldn't be a problem, necessarily, but so far the story seems goofy and old-style, kind of an excuse to get as many villains together as possible.  It's also a little more challenging to see what's going on.  I seem to be using audio cues more than visual ones to fight henchmen.  That may just take some getting used to, though.

Overall, it seems like more of the same, which is mostly a good thing.  There does seem to be a similar amount of level padding, as well, which was starting to bug me (the helicarrier is something like 5 or 6 levels when it probably could have been 3 or 4), so I'm sure folks who demand quantity will get what they're looking for.

I know it sounds like I'm down on this game, but I am actually enjoying it.  Since Raven put it together, I'm assuming the story will get better.  That's usually one of their strengths.  Once I get used to the new graphic style, I'm sure it'll be easier to keep my eye on who's fighting whom.  One thing that I thought especially cool was when I got to the first save point and reassembled my team.  You start with Captain America, Spidey, Thor and Wolverine.  I kicked out Thor and dropped in Iron Man.  A voice announced "New Avengers" and showed me that with that team I had a higher resistance level.  Of course, I did a quick check and there are bonuses for X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Old Avengers, as well.  I'm sure there are others.

So far, I'd give it a 7.  I'm not as initially wowed as I was with the first X-Men game, but it still looks to be a lot of fun.

Good review... I have one question though... is the co-op only over live?  Should modify the question to specify that I'm asking about the 360 version, I see the xbox version is listed as 1-4 players, but the 360 review says 1 player.

My bad, I need to update that record.  You can play 4 players locally or over Live for the Xbox and 360 version.

Edit: fixed!

I'm grabbing the 360 version in the next hour or so... looking forward to playing some co-op tonight!

The ads for the game say 140 characters.
Other impressions I've read have said 60 playable characters.
Your review says 22+ playable characters.

Yeah, EB didn't get it in today either. So...I got it at Best Buy! smile

So far, I am LOVING this game. The graphics on the 360 version are incredible. I like it much more than X-Men Legends, which looked kind of goofy, IMO. Anyway I am having a blast with this game and I love how you can unlock different costumes for the characters that turn them into completely different heroes (ie. Symbiote Spiderman, War Machine) . It is a lot like XMen Legends as far as gameplay, but it just looks so much better.

There are 22 PLAYABLE characters in the game (including unlockables). There are 140 different Marvel characters to interact with in the game, but are not all playable.

Was just going to ask the same thing.. no PSP review yet unforutnately.

I'm really interested in hearing if it (the psp version) has online play like the other versions do.

See, I'd probably prefer fewer playable characters than that.  One of my issues with the X-Men Legends games was that I had a hard time settling in and developing a team because I was always distracted by "hmmm, maybe this isn't optimal.  I wonder if I should be using so and so instead of this other character".

Gah, I was trying to hold off, but the forum effect must be one of the strongest superpowers EVAR.  I'm probably going to take the plunge.

I wonder if there's any chance of extra characters/costumes being available via Marketplace in the future?  I would love that.

Yup - just called and confirmed. "all the stores in the state didn't get it", or so he said.

So, no problem. I'll hit Best Buy and see if they have it there. I want the $5 for $20 Live gamecard they're offering as it is.  icon_smile

EDIT: And yes, my Best Buy had it in stock. Make sure you call ahead just to make sure.

I hope so. The PSP has some exclusive characters that are not in the 360 version, like Hawkeye. I would love to have him available.

The IGN review is up here.   I believe the 60+ playable characters is based on having 3 different versions of each of the 20 characters, with different outfits and stats associated with each.  I picked this up as my third game at the TRU sale, along with Phantasy Star Universe and Okami, but I'm not sure if I'm going to start playing it yet.

Fun game so far, but a BIG boo for not putting in a brightness adjust.

I'm sorry - that needs to be a requirement on all 360 games. Most of them are WAY too dark for my TV set.

And I know of a few 'team combos' so far. I'm gonna put it in a spoiler tag though if you don't wanna know:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Bonus name  -  characters seen in combo  -  bonus effect

Fantastic Four  -  Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Thing, Human Torch  -  20 Health per KO
New Avengers  -  Any combination of: Captain America, Spiderman, Spiderwoman, Luke Cage, Iron Man, Wolverine  -  +5 All Resistances
X-Men  -  Storm, Colossus, Ice Man, Wolverine  -  +15% Max Energy
Avengers  -  Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Ms. Marvel  -  +5% Damage
Natural Forces  -  Iceman, Human Torch, Storm, Thor  -  5% Damage inflicted is health gain
Femme Fatale  -  Ms. Marvel, Spiderwoman, Storm, Elektra  -  +5% Damage

And for the two 'exclusive' characters obtainable via Gamestop and EB... Do the following at the Character Select Screen (where you can build your team):

Daredevil:  Left, left, right, right, up, down, up, down, start
Silver Surfer:  Down, Left, Left, Up, Right, Up, Down, Left, start

Eat THAT exclusive characters!  icon_biggrin
