Reviews are starting to roll in...

7.3 from GameSpot

7.5 from Hardcore Gamer magazine.

Most reviews are complaining of more of the same.

When is it actually released?

NIS isn't so much evolving the genre, as they are simply catering to a niche audience of metagamers who can look past or even appreciate the oddball mechanics and style of the games, while obsessively buffing its characters to hit the trademark 9999 level cap.

Eh, that's pretty much true.

Makai Kingdom is published by NIS, though.  Which means it'll price drop, unlike Atlus games.

I am new to the whole Disgaea/Phantom Brave and the first one..but didn't all of them pretty much get the same scores (Disgaea was alittle higher) because they said they were pretty much directed towards the fans and not really anything new?

I don't know why, but I have high hopes for Makai Kingdom.  It comes out on the 27th, and I have it preordered through NIS America so I get the bonus stuff.  So I'll let you know how it is when I get it.

I played Phantom Brave for most of the weekend, and I'm now waffling on picking this up the minute it comes out.  Seeing that the kept the $#*^%$ miserable movement system is a huge negative.  (Why the hell did they do that?  I just can't get past someone saying, lets make control in a rpg a problem that you have to endure.  It's a problem when I am yelling at my tv, "can you even f%^#$ walk?! I know NBA backup centers that are more coordinated than you!!")

Who am I kidding, I will probably get it by the end of the week anyways.  I love Strategy RPGs, even if I've done it all before.

I'm pretty sure you actually get to drive the characters when it's their turn to move -- ie, you move them like you move around on Phantom Island between battles.

Here's a class list someone posted on Penny Arcade:

Quote
Merchant - Goofy-looking girl in big classes and poofy clothes
Priest - Hot chick in a tight dress
Magician - Old angry wizard guy with a slouch and a bendy moustache
Witch - Cutesy chick with a ribbon and frilly clothes
Theif - little London Urchin kid with striped shirt and cool Mario-esque hat
Warrior (M) - Average looking dude, with a shirt that doesn't cover midriff
Valkyrie - Average looking chick, with a shirt that does
Soldier (M) - Camo dude with horned helmet, crazy look in his eye
Soldier (F) - Camo chick with short hair and elf ears
Medic - Young kid type in WW2 garb, helmet has skull n crossbones
Engineer - Kinda world-weary type, has a demon-shaped welding mask
Professor - Hot chick in glasses, trenchcoat and miniskirt
Swordmaster (M) - Angry, long-haired, bare-chested, pretty badass
Swordmaster (F) - Angry, too-cutesy, clothes are three sizes too big
Archer - Hot chick with lotsa curly hair and skimpy dress thing, badass
Chef - Cool leopard-stripe bandanna, as badass as a chef can get
Thunder God - Angry, bemuscled humanoid god
Berserker - Feral looking crazyman, stitches attach his head and shoulders to his torso
Whip Master - Hot chick with ponytail, miniskirt and big boots
Forsaken One - Slug with slanted eyes
Bombster - Sorta like an Aliens alien with two red sacks attached to his head
Gardener - A stump come to life
Idol - Raggedy Anne with an attitude problem; mainly healer
Mana Sphere - A living flame with one big eye-think Suezo from MR but cooler
Carrot Dude - A, well, carrot dude. Walking, breathing, Carrot Dude
Pump Kin - Dude with a pumpkin head and a scarf. Good with flamethrower
Corn Guy - Can you guess? That's right! A guy that is also a cob of corn. Cool jacket and good with magic
Hell Kitty - Oddly, not actually a cat, but a young girl in a cat costume. Cutesy, but will kick your ass with a Morning Star
Apple Kid - Apple for a head, worm in the eye. Another healer
Mimic - An evil treasure chest with wings on its head
Iron Golem - Square head, round belly, high defense
Darkstalker - A flaming humanoid entity. Very badass looking
Vampire - Dark, very pointy head and shoulder blades
Gobbler - Put fish lips on a flabby orc and give him horns and a bib
Death - Grim Reaper; cloak, floating body, skull grin, the works
Guardian - A living wood stove. Big curved cylinders for horns
Heaven's Bliss - Brightly colored owl with a big crown. Very funny and cool
Devil 1 - Basically a LotR Balrog but not on fire
Devil 2 - A demon knight kinda thing; face plate, pointy horns, a cape, etc
Prinny - Looks just like Abe Vigoda, oddly enough
Note that each class has six "ranks", and you'll rarely see these class names used in the game. The game tends to refer to the rank names instead.

Amen.  Plus, I may be Nippon Ichi'd out right now.

Ew.  Plus there's confinement (you don't do it every battle, just once to permanantly form a character).  I fookin' hated confinement in Phantom Brave.

at least the confinement is permanent, but I agree..it is sort of annoying at times in Phantom Brave, but I find it more annoying when they have such a short return.

I'm surprised at you!
The reviews say "its great! Its more of the same!" and then give the game a bad score. Its kind of crazy.

I've played a little over 11 hours since I got it yesterday, and let me tell you that I am more hooked than I was with Disgaea.
Vehicles are fun, as are the facilities, and the addition of the random extenstions makes replaying maps extremely fun! And it seems that leveling up is much more easy than in Phantom Brave. And it isn't overly complicated for no reason like PB was.

Add one more to the list.  Gamespy says:
Quote from: "Gamespy"
Yes, Makai Kingdom is an engaging, deep game. It's also the most thematically appealing and robust game to come from the developer since Disgaea (contending with Phantom Brave and La Pucelle Tactics.) The off-the-wall humor is wickedly pointed and the characters are simply hilarious; the gameplay is deep and engrossing but clunky and far too close to what the developer's been doing for the past several years, just more so.  If you've an inexhaustible appetite for their recipe, this game will give you hours upon hours of glee; but don't look for innovation or passion here -- it's another exercise along the usual line, highly analytical and aimed at the thoroughly anal retentive.

Every player review I've seen says this is the best Nippon Ichi yet.  The professional reviewers have lost their minds, I can't wait for my Makai to arrive.

It uses Phantom Brave's spherical movement range, but you control each step the character makes with the left analog stick.  There's little reason to complain about movement imho.

I want a grid, that's all.

That said, I haven't tried MK's movement, so I may like that better.  I dunno.  I'll give it a rental when I have more time to game.

OK, I've now played about ten hours myself this weekend, and I can say with absolute certainty that Disgaea is still the king.

Generating random dungeons at low levels seems basically impossible.  In order to generate a random dungeon, the character you sacrifice has to have a certain amount of mana. Of course, to get that mana, he has to fight, which inevitably levels him up.  When you generate a dungeon, it is based on the levels of the character you're using, so yes, it is categorically impossible to have an easy 'starter dungeon' to level up the new guys you make.  Just stupid.  (and no, as of chapter 3, I have not found a 'fusion' function like PB that allows me to gift a new character with mana.)

I also hate the PB throwing system, ie the target has to be empty handed in order to throw.  One of the dungeons specifically has a throwing portion - which means you have to use teams to both throw the character over, and then someone else has to toss his wepon over for him.  Stupid, just stupid.  Disgaea worked so much better than this.  This did not add strategy, just tedium.

On the good side, the movement system is good, so the PB issue of people not going where you tell them is 'fixed'.  I'm still  very early in the game so maybe some of these issues will clear themselves up (im a very slow player).

(And side note - seeing one of the opposing bosses referred to as 'aka'asshat' had me in stitches.)

On that throwing level, one person can throw buildings instead of people, and that means easier killing. Try it out!

I've been able to build a few random dungeons, at low and high(er) levels.

Throwing a building(My hand slaps forehead): D'OH!  Thanks for mentioning that to me.  I really didn't even mess with building til last night (in chapter four)

How did you get someone to accumulate the necessary mana without levelling up too fast?  The first time one of my characters had their mana catch up with his level was around level 13.  He's now level 20 (he's my leader) and he's the only guy who can do it.

and one other thing: 3-4 has to be the cheapest insta-money/experience yet in strategy RPG's.  Both CoO3 from Disgaea and 3-2 from Phantom Brave had 'tricks' you had to use to get major experience from the levels (well, CoO3 you just had to be to a certain level before you could damage those things.)

My copy just arrived, so this isn't first hand, but I remember hearing someone recommend hitting one of your characters with a hammer to lower their level while keeping their mana.  Something like that?

So far tonight, I have 3 hours under my belt and things are going well.

I was pissed as hell when I got back from a really long battle (man, the extensions on maps can make some really really large) and my sword and ufo were gone!  I had thrown my sword down to get some points for picking up a rock and the ufo was used to make an extension...I had no clue that if you weren't holding an item you brought *into* the battle it would be lost.  That sucked, but it's the only way to learn, I guess.

The free-movement "grid" is still a little bit of a pain...but I won't give up on it.  A few times there has been just a huge pile of allies/enemies that took some time to look at and see what I really had there.

I'm also a little disappointed in not being able to bring in some main characters into battle.  I knew this going in, and knew it may be an issue with me, but so far I've been tinkering around with my army and it seems interesting.

The story/diologue is great so far.  Granted, these are voices I've heard for about 4 games now, but that's okay...I'm not sure I've heard a voice quite like Mickey's in the previous NI games, though.    What a character.

I really appreciate the Disgaea approach...you've got the execute and end turn commands.  I disliked Phantom Brave's way of doing things based on speed...turns seem so more natural.

I'm really fighting the urge to pick this one up.  I loved Disgaea, but after spending close to 60 hours with it, La Pucelle and Phantom Brave just seemed like MOTS to me and I lost interest pretty quickly.  I'm a little nervous that the same thing would happen with MK.
