it doesn't disable the ability to save, does it?

No, it says that "Achievements, Online Leaderboards and VAC Protected online games are disabled"... and "Happy Modding".  icon_confused

That's exactly why they did it. It's bizarre, makes no sense, and is funny. Okay, it's not THAT funny, but you get my point. slywink

Hmmm, if it was due out April 1, I'd say it was an April Fool's joke, now I'm wondering if maybe it is a joke?  icon_razz

Paradox announced "King Arthur: Vietnam" as a joke, referencing Magicka, so that got me curious...
http://www.bluesnews.com/a/2266/paradox-interactive-reveal-plans-for-vietnam-franchise
Quote
Ho Chi Minh City, April 1st 2011 - Today Paradox Interactive has announced the full title of their upcoming roleplaying strategy game King Arthur II, now known as King Arthur II: Vietnam. The change comes after receiving overwhelmingly positive reactions to the announcement of Magicka: Vietnam.

The Glorious Leader Fredrik Wester explains the reasoning;
"A wise journeyman once told me "Don't stop believing" and that's exactly what we're doing here. The response on the Magicka DLC was so fantastic so we just decided to keep going, so this is a strategic decision we're taking for the company and all our games across the board. The decision was made without consulting any developers or fellow colleagues, it just felt right."

What surely will mark a paradigm shift in the gaming industry as a whole, King Arthur II: Vietnam will soon be followed by the space strategy epic Sword of the Stars II: Vietnam. Paradox Interactive aims to quickly follow suit with Europa Universalis: Vietnam, Vietnam: The MMOVRGP before rounding off the year with Vietnam: Vietnam since gamers have requested this on frequent occasions.
The last funny bit reminds me of my little rant long ago here about Tom Clancy games eventually devolving to "Tom ClancyTM's Tom ClancyTM."

I'm leery of authors like him and Harlan EllisonTM who have trademarked their names.  icon_razz

Oh the pain! Okay I have now started the game three times. Each time I get to the Level Complete but cannot exit (assume this is the tutorial level). When I restart I always start at the beginning despite the Level Complete message (which sits on the screen). I was exiting North East but can't seem to actually exit. I get you restart at the beginning of the Level if you exit but I am getting Level Complete - what gives? Assuming that the Level Complete should take me to another level but it doesn't happen.

maybe you're just so awesome it's decided you have already won the game  icon_wink

I only saw one thread on this over at Steam, ad it didn't have any replies, but did find this post from Paradox with save games for various levels so you can skip to the next one.

Gamespot is very much thumbs down on the Vietnam add-on, citing insane difficulty, no ability to save within its couple levels, and targets firing from off screen (AK-47s and the ilk). They liked the co-op OK.:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/magicka-vietnam/review.html

The original release still amused me and I may eventually pick it up.

Yeah, they can kiss my arse if they think I'll buy any expansions when they still haven't fixed the base game.  By fixed I mean adding the option to save within a level and squashing that horrendous slowdown bug.

Hey, I checked and apparently you get to play the full original Magicka (not just MP):
Quote
Free Weekend

FREE WEEKEND! Play the full game for free until Sunday at 1PM Pacific Time! Click Here to download and start playing. Must have Steam installed.
About the Game

The Steam store page mentions the Free Weekend (low on the page) and then has a little link there to d/l via Steam and play. I assume this is different than the Demo button there. It's about 721MB.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/42910/

Through Nov. 21 the mega-Magicka collection is $6.24 and the original game's $2.49. I'm waiting for a further price cut!  biggrin I've tried the demo a couple times and something about the controls just didn't quite feel right for me. But I'll try the full version this weekend and maybe it'll grow on me.

WARNING! DANGER WILL ROBINSON! Game wants to install a version of MS Net Framework, sending a shudder of fear through most PC LA Noire players. It's version 3.1 fwiw.  paranoid If I cancel that install, Magicka itself won't run/install.

I bought it for $2.50 and loving it so far. The humor is great, and the spell mechanics are extremely unique and interesting.

So this is $4 or something at Amazon download today... did you guys end up enjoying it enough to play through? I'm starting a decent backlog right now so on the fence about grabbing it. I'd likely be playing through single player.

I love Magicka but it's really not a single player game.  Most of the enjoyment comes from accidently doing something awesome and inadvertently exploding your friends in the process.

As an aside, "The Stars are Left" is recommended.  It's about 2-4 hours of content and includes a whole new story-line complete with in-game cut-scenes, lots of new humor and even some light puzzle solving.  It may also interest people to know that only one person in a group needs to own it to play.  However, in order to find all the new weapons you need to be wearing the robe that is only available if you do own the exspansion.

Awesome, I didn't know that. I bought the collection for my son in Novemmber before TSaL was released and then just bought a 2nd copy in the recent sale. I figured I was going to have to buy that DLC for my son, but it sounds like I won't.

and yet another expansion: The Other Side of the Coin:

Quote
Magicka: The Other Side of the Coin lets the player experience a completely new take on the Magicka universe, by taking the roles of Alucart the Vampire and his Necromancers and fight against the forces of good with the purpose of sacking Vlad’s attempt to improve the poor relations between the humans, the dwarves and the elves.

The expansion follows in the footstep of the highly popular Magicka: Vietnam, with objective based level progression, new story and brand new playable characters.
Features

Play as Alucart the Vampire and his henchmen, the Necromancers
New environment of beautiful Elven architecture
1 Challenge map, playing as necromancers
    Necromancer introduced to PvP
    Custom objectives and achievements
Innovative and dynamic spellcasting system with thousands of possible combinations
Up to four player co-op in all game modes as well as single player option
Experience the parody and satire of a cliché fantasy world
