I had all kinds of trouble with drawing on the carpentry mini-game.  The way I finally got it working was I would start drawing the shape right before it turned the corner.  Hopefully, you understand what I mean by that.  If I remember correctly, the shapes would move horizontal and then move vertical.  So, right before it made the switch, I would start drawing.

and don't worry about being super fast but more precise, I found not pressing too hard helped as well. This was the deal breaker for me and my wife. The game was awesome, and is pretty damn cool to explore but the poor response killed it.

both these helped a lot - i have my new beds! yea the game really is a lot of fun but i can see how it can be super tedious / annoying.  overall though it hasnt killed it for me yet - can you hang ropes down to get to the cave? ive been making a lot in the hopes i can...?

it requires a lot to get "stats" up enough to be able to do stuff.  the saving grace for me is that its actually kind of fun to do it.  hope it holds up for me because i like and want to continue liking it

I really enjoyed the game a great deal and finished the main story.  I tried out the second mode where you play as the girl, but lost interest with a lot of other DS games coming out and I recently traded it and a bunch of other games to get Daxter and Syphon Filter for free.  It's definitely a game for those who like a little bit of "work" in their games (like Harvest Moon).
