I'm just hoping it's another system hog like GTA IV was on release.

It uses a different engine so hopefully it will be a better experience. I hope Black & White mode looks better. I got the ps3 version and the textures look horrible in B&W.

Both steam and direct2drive have this up for pre-order at 10% off plus you get a free copy of GTA 3. I know steam will let you gift the bonus if you already have itt, not sure about D2D.

[edit] I wonder how they are going to handle the crime scene hints you'd get via the controller vibrating when playing the console versions.

Clearly, they have to pack in a vibrator with the PC version...  The Weghted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you.

Seriously, what poor timing. I suppose I'll pick it up down the line when it's on sale.

I need to figure out how I'll make time to buy a Wii and Zelda!

After reading up on the console version reviews, and watching many videos, I can see what the fuss was/is about. And it's NOT an FPS, therefore I must buy it.  icon_lol It sounds awesome. And now that I'm getting re-used to using console controllers, I won't fret too much about whether it's a true keyboard/mouse game or a "lazy port."

Anywho, here's something new -- new screenshots from the PC version!

I mentioned in Steals/Deals, there's a little 5%-off sale this weekend only. I missed that on LOTR: Warn in the North, so I think I'll bite on this. I'll mull it over today.  icon_smile

If you never checked the official site on this (I'm sure it was mentioned in console thread, hadn't seen here), it's quite snazzy:

The "interrogate the detectives" Q&A, with fan questions to the actors portraying detectives is pretty fun:

ugh,  I was going to actually pre-order LA Noire off of Impulse/Gamestop since you can use trade in credit to pay, but apparently they haven't gotten the damn system to be able to accept it yet.  looks like this issue was happening at least since October 28th, and they're saying it may be fixed by the end of this week.  at least they gave me a 10% off code, but I love how the email ended:

Again sorry for any inconvenience,?

are they unsure if it was inconvenient that their system isn't working?  icon_lol

[edit] frack it, went with Green Man Gaming for $36.

I had to click "Install" on the LA Noire page in my games section today. It started from scratch (I pre-ordered Sunday), so I don't think there's any helpful preloading in this case, sorry.

OK, sigh after all that. The game requires installing MS Framework 3.5, and it crashes and won't complete installation of 3.5 thus I can't install the game at the moment.  Roll Eyes Gonna try rebooting and see if that helps.

The Framework 3.5 setup fails every time, even after rebooting. The readme file is ridiculous (it's pages and pages and pages of reasons why the program may fail, or not install, or cause problems).

I'm gonna see if I have an old version I need to uninstall first. If that doesn't work, I appear to be completely screwed.  disgust The Steam forums have been down for days btw "for maintenance."

ADDENDUM: OK now the game launcher came up in spite of MS Framework's setup failing, so I don't really know if the game's setup properly or not. But I can t least start it.  icon_smile

I just get to an LA Noire marquee sign screen with a rotating "synching" message in the lower left corner. It never moves past that screen. So maybe the Framework is screwed up then.

I don't remember the framework popping up, I think I actually got that using Windows Update a while back.  maybe trying to grab it directly from MS might help: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=21

granted, I don't know what could go wrong with that, so if something goes horribly wrong blame Caine.

After 5 reboots and various hair-pulling, it seemed that uninstalling 2.0 and 3.5 SP1, rebooting, and then installing 3.5 SP1 ... well it didn't work. The game still tried to install 3.5 and failed, but it failed more... succinctly, and now I've got the stupid social club login screen in game like I'm supposed to. I might even get to play the game before I have to go to sleep.  icon_razz

While it's an intriguing game, as CeeKay mentioned, it seems to run a little choppy in places. And it just kinda bothered me that my guy picks up his first crime-related item with his bare hands and paws it like my cat JJ would a dead mouse. WTF?  confused From what I've read, we've had fingerprint analysis here since the early 1900s, so this doesn't make sense to me. I'm not expecting a Dragnet simulator, it just seems goofy for my guy to treat evidence like candy.

Blackjack, I'm having the same .net 3.5 error - it didn't install, and everytime i try to start the game, is chugs than dies.

I deleted .net 3.5, rebooted, reinstalled it, started game back up, same thing.

What did you do to get over the hump?
I PM'd you my rambling attempt to explain my weird science that worked. Although it basically sounds like what you already tried.
-Did you use the 3.5 off the MS web site, or the 3.5 "SP1" that the Windows Updater uses?
-I also uninstalled an older version of .NET (2.0 I think), though I don't know if that was significant.

I think what I discovered is even if I removed all shreds of ANY version of .NET from my PC, the game STILL would fail its .NET installation and the game would get stuck at the "LA Noire" marquee screen, with the little "synch" icon permanently pulsating.

I think 3.5 SP1 is the version that Windows Update installs, and I already had that in place. What seemed to work for me (out of desperation) was to:
-uninstall the 3.5 SP1 version
-reboot
-let Windows Updater d/l and install the "SP1" version of .NET 3.5 yet again (I know it makes no sense; but it seemed to be what got me over the hump)
-start the game
-I think I just canceled the attempted 3.5 install the game insists on doing again. I didn't even let it reach the point of failing again.
-That time finally the marquee screen stopped synching and pulled down a "Rockstar Social Club" menu from the top of the screen.

*This is far from perfect. The game still wants to try to start installing .NET 3.5, although now the install menu seems sort of blank. And the game crashed. I restarted Steam and then was able to play it normally again.

If my admittedly lame workaround doesn't help, you can file a trouble ticket with Rockstar via its web site:
http://support.rockstargames.com/anonymous_requests/new

The LA Noire Support page is here (you can see there are various problems)

I thought I have the same problem as Blackjack, as it installs .net 3.5,  but when I start the game it just chugs and won't load.  So I tried to verify integrity couple times, also run game exe. in admin mode, the game just keeps fail to load, so finally I figured out you have to start steam in admin mode retard, and now the game is working.

Oh yeah, that's also listed as a "workaround" on the Rockstar page. Running Steam in admin didn't help my problem though.

Question: I downloaded the PC version of L.A. Noire from Steam and I can't launch the game!  When I try to run the game from the launcher it brings me back to the launcher in an endless loop, or sometimes it crashes altogether after appearing to re-perform part of the setup.  How can I fix this?

Answer: In Windows Vista/7, it may be necessary to turn off UAC (User Account Control) and/or run Steam as an Admin.
*Though I might try that again -- perhaps it would at least remedy my crashing issue on the first attempt to run the game.

Hey, I hope to god it's some sort of major update, but my LA Noire is reinstalling/updating all the way. I'll investigate a bit to see if there was some sort of major update. Or, if Steam is just going beserk.  icon_razz

The only clue I can find is at Rockstar's support page:

We are opening this article for on topic discussion about possible issues that can cause the patch process to occasionally fail.
Please someone remind me in the future to let someone else here be the guinea pig for screwed up PC versions of multi-platform titles. Please?  disgust

ADDENDUM: I started it now, and this time it prompted for some sort of DirectX install but didn't get into the .NET framework stuff at all, and the game started OK. My hope is they just removed .NET from the game altogether but I'm really not sure.

Just as an FYI.. With a lot of the Steam games, you can just click cancel when those extra things come up... I do this about 95% of the time with no issues... If there is an issue, I will usually use a direct MS download of whatever it's trying to run and then try the cancel thing again...

Whatever the fix was, it fixed me good - at least I can play the game now.

However, investigating one of the first cases in front of the shoe store, getting horrible lag/slow downs. Like playing a slide-show.  Not sure why performance went into the gutter.

Performance for me is also bad (gtx 570) and the game barely looks better than on console. I wonder if Rockstar are even trying with their pc ports, this is pre patched GTA4 pc bad.

The game on low :

The game on high :

not sure if it's a fluke or not, but I saw somewhere a suggestion to run the game as an administrator.  I gave it a shot, and what do you knw?  game was nice and smooth.   I even made sure everything was set to max-  had no hitches or anything.  I don't think I've installed any new drivers since the game came out, but I played up through the tutorial and following two cases with nary a hiccup.
