Just came across this on TheForce.net in a news report on what may be coming for Star Wars gaming in 2006.  Here is the link if you're interested:  LucasArts in 2006

* Knights of the Old Republic III: This one is a given. After the amazing results of the first two titles, LucasArts would be silly not to explore this series just a little bit further. Most will recall that some of KOTORII was removed due to time constraints, and that before LucasArts culled it's staff, KOTORIII was in some form of pre-production. So there must be something bubbling away in the pot. If there is, look towards E3 for the announcements, if not sooner.

The part I bolded is very interesting.  I didn't know this.  I know I will be eagerly following this years E3.

I guess what matters to me is what was "bubbling" after LucasArts culled it's staff.

You know, I'm pretty sure you participated in some of the KOTOR threads where the Lucasarts culling was discussed.  It happened quite a long time ago (August/September 2004 before KOTOR 2 came to market.

Ugh.  I don't remember that far back.  Yes, I did hear Internet rumors about KOTOR III since then, but this news coming from The Force.net just feels more reliable, hence my excitement or hopefullness. biggrin

If they were going to announce it, they'd wait until E3 methinks. Besides, I thought the first two were mega hits so a third one should be a no-brainer. I'm still holding out for the "finished game" mod for the PC version of part two though before I play it. slywink

In this case the fact that its the Force.net doesn't really mean anything.  They're repeating what everyone else is saying- the great sales of both previous KOTORs ensures a KOTOR 3 but they don't have any inside of info (or if they do they aren't referencing it in this post).

I wouldn't sweat it too much.  KOTOR 3 *will* happen.  What I'd sweat is how much it resembles the first two.  With a generational shift I would expect some pretty heavy rejiggering.

My biggest concern is that I'm not sure who can develop it- unless things have changed, both Bioware and Obsidian were on record as saying they weren't doing it.  I'm not sure if there are any compentent western RPG houses left to develop it.

Sorry, not trying to ruin your day.  But until we find out about the gameplay and who the dev is, I don't think its worth getting your hopes up too high.

Unless we find out someone with an impressive pedigree is behind it, my gut feeling is that there will be some major changes.  I wouldn't be surprised to find it move more towards Action-RPG and I wouldn't even be surprised to see the game switch timelines to something more "current" (ie prequels, OT, or post-OT).  Hope I'm wrong.

I posted about the KOTOR III team getting the boot last fall.  They were developing it as a next-gen project, but it hadn't gotten very far.  "Preproduction" is a very broad term.  At most of the large multi-title game companies, there are probably 10 projects in some form of "preproduction" of which one or two will see the light of a store shelf.  KOTOR3 is an obvious product to make, but you'd have to find a team willing to invest the time and money to make it good and put it up alongside the other RPGs that are coming out.  No easy task.  I can think of a few studios that would be up to it technically, but who knows if they wouldn't just rather work on their own stuff.

Well, I'd really rather kathode finish Oblivion first.  But if they can't, I'll understand.  I'll probably forget it's in development anyway.  biggrin

I'd hardly call that link "news."  Since when is a message board posting that quotes a vague magazine comment "news"?

Since when have we been restricted to only discussing news?  That would erase about 97% of the idle speculation we have going on.

I'm really excited about the possibility of a KOTOR3 so anything, even the wildest rumors, keep my hopes up.

The only problem is that, as of this moment, Obsidian only has two games in development - NWN2 and a game that they've stated is not a sequel and not based on a licensed setting.  That's straight off their own message boards.

That said, there is some indication that they are hiring a third team so that could be aimed at KOTOR 3, but get this:  they are looking for Unreal 3 engine folks so draw your own conclusions.
