http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/06/68448377/1ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, announced today that it will acquire the Mesquite, Tex.-based id. That means classic game franchises such as Doom and Quake will now sit alongside Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls in ZeniMax's portfolio.
"It's hard to imagine a more complimentary matchup here, where we are now (with) a publisher that has exactly zero overlap with the things that we have done," said id co-founder John Carmack, who will remain as id's technical director. "There's no sense of competing with other products here. We have got the full force of everything behind it."

That's surprising. I would have assumed that if anyone would stay independent forever, it would be id.

Actually, they are both owned by the single parent company. As Tech director, I'd think that it just means John Carmack will be in their Zenimax softball league.

Yes, but I'm sure kathode's an experienced operator in ZeniMax internal politics, and has already staked his claim to as many id properties as he can.

Day 1: Kathode explains the concept of a flashlight to Carmack. On the flipside, perhaps Elder Scrolls 5 will play more like Doom... you know, in the dark and on rails?

Sounds like only a good thing, I don't see the two companies influencing each other's games though.

So what happened here? I always thought id was pretty independent, what with being owned by some really old industry leaders.
I wonder if this is the result of Id making a bunch of poor decisions in the market, such as their leader running off to do rocketry while shunning support for their game engines. Id Tech 5 being slow to market, and Id's other games doing only okay at market.

I would assume so. They haven't had a major release since DOOM 3, and they can't do their small development team philosophy anymore.

I hope this gives Id more money to toss around. They make amazing engines, but lately not so much games. and FFS stop wasting effort on the stupid iphone and give us a real pc game already. Rage looks all kinds of awesome. How about finishing it?
hear that kathode?! MAKE THEM FINISH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
edit: Sure has been an interesting day though. Bioware and Mythic are buddy buddy now too forming a new studio.

My uneducated guess is that Carmack (and other higher ups) was sick of being a business man and wanted someone else to worry about the bean counting. I've enjoyed Bethsofts main games, but the animations have always been a little stiff (possible understatement). I'd like to see this merger make some technical improvements to future Elder Scrolls and Fallout games.

I would actually kind of love that. The DoomRPG was all kinds of awesome. On a bigger scale with Bethesda's involvement, it could be fantastic.

I played Morrowind to death, mostly using the Khajiit character... and my tiger tail kept getting caught on things like railings and such. I got quite used to re-loading the game when there was no other way to "free myself."
