Just got a PS2.

So...what games should I get?

I have Virtua Fighter 4 Evo, Tomb Raider (bleh), and Megaman X4.  I want to catch up on PS1 classics, too.  I don't like shooters on consoles, I like platform games, but not the sprawling Banjo-Kazooie/Mario 64 style, but more linear Rayman 2-esque games.  I like fighting games, but I'm just going to get VF4 and Soul Calibur 2.

Recommendations?

Sure bets that I am going to buy:

Final Fantasy VII
Threads of Fate
Some Crash Bandicoot game (not sure which)
Maybe King's Field, just because it intrigues me
Final Fantasy Tactics

Any other recommendations?

Ratchet & Clank games and the Jak & Daxter games are excellent platformers. Just picked up a PSTwo myself just before xmas. That thing is supa small.

The PS2 has the three best platforming series this generation in Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and Sly Cooper.  Though if you aren't a fan of collect-a-thons I would skip the first Jak & Daxter.

The Ratchet & Clank games are must-haves.  Sly Cooper is pretty good too.  I played a Jak demo once and will never buy the games.  Don't forget about  the PS1 Spyro games either.  I'm still playing Year of the Dragon.

Ico is cheap and a great game.

Katamari Damacy is only $20 and is my personal GOTY for 2004.

If you're into (or lean towards) RPGs, check out: Wild Arms (PS1), Wild Arms 3 (PS2), Xenosaga (PS2), Arc the Lad (PS1), Dark Cloud 2 (PS2), Suikoden (PS1).  Some will push you toward Metal Gear Solid (PS1) but it didn't do much for me.

Ace Combat 4 is a great one too.

You can find Amplitude, Frequency, and Gittaroo Man for 20 bucks or less most anywhere, I'd guess, and they are all great music/rythm games.  If that's your sort of thing.

My friends in college were always amazed by the fact that on the Dreamcast version, I couldn't do the early stages, but put me on the last two, and I was golden.

The game play was just so much fun. I loved the fact that the game didn't take itself to seriously.  Even aside from the tired story (I enjoyed the story but it's not exactly new)  it drew me in. Especially the cutscenes. Watching giant monster robots run amok through the city then faced with the fact that you had to save everyone without destroying the city in the process really hooked me. The twist near the end floored me (I swore I was hearing things) Guess my childhood of watching Giant Robots fight off aliens/monsters/robots really made it accesible to me.

You guys owe it to yourselves to at least rent this.

It's an action RPG with more action than RPG.  Too busy to be a real RPG, too much story to be a platformer.  It's a fun game, but I found it to be frustrating in spots.  Of course, I may be too old to play twitchers any more, so take my opinion with a grain of salt

Don't take out a loan to get it, but it's worth picking up if you can find it cheap, especially if it comes with that Final Fantasy VIII demo.   I got mine for $10 at EB and don't regret the purchase.

BTW, does it at least have leveling up?  I like action RPGs where I can level up (Screw you, Zelda! ).

My wife thought it was really, really dumb... then again she doesn't play ANY games.

It's not hard to understand how to play - basically you use the circle and x buttons and the d-pad controls.  But it does take practice.  There's a really helpful FAQ on GameFAQ's that helps with figuring out the timing of the button presses.  Once you figure it out it's cake.
