Wow, talk about a complete 180 over there compared to here. Europe is going nuts for the PS3.  thumbsup

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=22810

Quote
Online retailer Play.com is taking six times more pre-orders than it received for PlayStation 3 than Xbox 360 - and 15 times more than the Nintendo Wii.

That's according to head of games Gian Luzio, who told GamesIndustry.biz that PS3 is "the most pre-ordered console yet" for Play. The retailer is offering a GBP 524.99 bundle which includes first-party titles MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man and Genji.

It's not just Play which is seeing healthy pre-orders for PS3, according to Sony. A spokesperson told GI.biz, "With an unprecedented day one shipment of 1 million machines into Europe and a software catalogue of over 30 titles available at launch, retailer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

"Woolworths, Amazon and Play, to name a few, are reporting record breaking pre-orders and an overwhelming demand for PS3."

They do have a much better launch lineup over there than we did over here, so that could be part of it. They also get Casino Royale free with the PS3. All in all, Sony has got to be happy that things are going well for them in Europe.

Maybe they can pay their $600 in USDs.

Woolworths?  They are still around?

Cool stuff, and I agree about Casino Royale-its a gajillion times better a pack in blu-ray than silly Talladega Nights.

Wowie Zowie! That bundle is over 1000 bucks and they are still falling over themelves to preorder.
That's awesome news for Sony.
I don't think the launch lineup is THAT different...perhaps they've done a bit better job with the marketing overseas.

Personally, I don't think the launch did poorly here, but lost in the excellent amount of North American pre-orders is the whole perception that the system was merely a tool for ebay sellers. As with anything, lets see how it does in the next 12 months, thats the best way to really examine the success or failure of a system, to me at least.

I don't think that's mere perception. I can't tell you if the number of people that put theirs on ebay is 10% or 20% or whatever, but at least in my own little anecdotal retail environment, this isn't fiction or supposition. This happened. And a number of those people have since sold their systems back at a loss. If you want evidence for this happening on a broad scale, look no further than the attach rate for Resistance and other games.

But that's besides the point. I'm not here to bash Sony. I'm happy that things seem to be going well for them in Europe. Lord knows they could use a bit of positive press. Like many others, I want to see a healthy competition between three companies, and to have that we need Sony. I will admit to having an increasing affection for Nintendo these days and would absolutely love to see them put out a revamped Wii supporting 720p in a couple of years.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't think anyone in here is bashing Sony, I certainly am not. Competition is key and just like with games, there needs to be tough competition with systems also. We agree on everything in your second paragraph. The first one, eh, I think the ebay thing was overblown, and hell, I was a participant, icon_lol

Europe is probably Sony's most solid territory.  Xbox did horrible over there and the 360 hasn't been setting the world on fire either.   The tide may be shifting a little though since the DS has done well there and the Wii seems to be off to a good start but if there was a territory that Sony could safely delay to launch in, it's Europe.

360 isnt doing that bad here(in UK anyway)...lost planet has been number 1 in all formats chart for a few weeks now

i got an email from GAME(which is where i go.....even i dont go to woolworths anymore, although they do have decent prices on games)saying that i should preorder one.....i am not doing,i am gonna get mine next year...they are only selling the ps3 as bundles,so they have

option 1
Sony PlayStation 3 Console (60GB)
Resistance: Fall of Man
Virtua Fighter 5
Virtua Tennis 3
 that costs Ł564

option 2
Sony PlayStation 3 Console (60GB)
Resistance: Fall of Man
Call of Duty 3
Motorstorm
 this one costs Ł554

that is way out of my price range, and sony know where they can go

the 360 premium was Ł280(no games)

there has still been newspaper articles saying that, there will still be some on the shelf when it does finally get released here at the end of next month.......but we'll see

Well, if most retailers are doing like GAME is and selling only bundles, I think flipping them  for a profit becomes that much harder.

Well thats not so surprising. Unfortunately their marketing efforts for the PS3 have just been a disaster of arrogance and misstatements since that one lady left.

So how's business, I asked the bloke behind the counter? What sort of interest is there in the PS3 compared to the Xbox 360 and Wii?

Very low, he replied: with, what, six weeks to go before the launch, half their pre-allocation had not been taken up. (Of course you could go glass-half-full and say half had been.) That compared to pretty much all taken up for the Xbox 360 a year ago, and huge over-demand for the Wii before last Christmas.

So what sort of ratio of demand was there between the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360? Demand for the Wii was more than 10x greater than for the PS3, he said, and had been about 5x that of the Xbox. And he personally didn't think any of the PS3 launch games were worth the bother. "Sony has been promising this for two years and people have just got bored with it," he suggested.

Well by golly, if the bloke behind the counter of one store (many of which have personal axes to grind with Sony/Ps3, I've noticed) says that the PS3 is a failure....than it must be true! It is pretty funny how some (kotaku, there is a reason your URL's are banned on the GAF) have siezed on this one persons report to counteract the heads of the major gaming stores that say the PS3 preorders are going gangbusters right now, like it's somehow the same...and around and round we go.

My personal favorite part: when he calls the launch lineup for Europe "Boring"!  icon_lol

Sales numbers, not pre-orders which Sony can make up to satisfy their core need to seem to be dominant in a marketplace, are what decides this. Not press releases from a company with vested interest in the product success, nor the average game seller. (he could be in fact entirely right about how many preorders; even if that is the case his customer base isn't necessarily a true and accurate reflection of the market on the whole).

Yeah it looks really really good on a 42in plasma. I was surprised. I still kinda prefer the stylized graphics of a NFS:MW or Burnout, but technically, F1 is the best of the best.
