I just tried playing Skyrim and Dungeon Siege III on Steam and neither would launch.  They just sit at the "Preparing to launch" screen.  Since I've never had a problem with either one before, I'm guessing something is wrong with Steam itself.

I shut down Steam and restarted and now it's working again.  I guess it was just a glitch, but that's never happened to me before  confused

Odd. I couldn't sign in on another PC, and I *know* my user and pass. Now it works.

They had an unexpected maintenance outage earlier this afternoon.  Maintenance being the kind version of server problems.

I can count the number of times steam has had an outage over the last 5 years on one hand.  I would hardly say pc gaming is "dieing"  thanks to steam.

Wasn't PC gaming supposed to be dying in 1990, 1996, 2000, and 2005 also? Graphically the PC is on the upswing since the consoles are all old tech now. Look at BF3 on the PC with the settings maxed. Beauty.

Having more problems with Steam logging me off tonight as well.

I've noticed several games (Payday, Orcs Must Die, Psychonauts, Anomaly, etc) getting updates of several hundred megs today, which leads me to believe they'll be doing another one of those  deals similar to the Portal 2 tie-in where you play games to do meta stuff.

As a PC gamer, I can only hope that's true.

Somehow, though, I don't see how that will happen.  What is their logic based on?  Maybe I've been misled on recent trends, but sucky consoles are still going strong.

Increase in digital sales (cheap sales, that is), where the consoles has no counterparts , leading to more units sold on the pc platform, although not necessarily a greater turnover.

I think they expect PC gaming sales continue to rise each year following the current trend and the console gaming sales are going to slow down until the next generation of XBOX, PS, etc. are released which is likely to be after 2014.

By PC gaming, I think they include digital download PC games, MMORPG, free-to-play, DLCs, facebook social gaming, etc.

Steam is certainly Fubared right now.  503 errors all over the place with the new sales.

Yeah, the sale is messing things pretty bad.  I did get in a couple of hours on Skyrim earlier, but I'm pretty sure the crash I had was Steam related.

Don't you need to log in Steam first, to put it into offline mode? I have a shaky internet connection in my gaming room (stupid powerplugs never work grmbl  mad) and sometimes I can't play Skyrim because I've left Steam in on-line mode when I quit last time. And I can't put it into offline mode, without logging in first. Or am I missing an option somewhere?

Greg, check the thread in Steals and Deals.

As for offline mode, when I start my comp and the router is down, Steam fails the login and asks me if I want to go into Offline mode. So my suggestion would be to pull the Internet connection, Shut Steam all the way off or reboot, and wait for that window.

Isg, if you click the offline button without an active internet connection what do you get?  My experience is the same as Rocketman's, no offline mode without an online mode connection first. Since my main computer is now a laptop I've been SOL for Steam games while traveling if I can't get an internet connection.   crybaby  I also have to leave the laptop in standby because if Steam or the computer get rebooted it will check for internet again and I'm stuck.  I've solved the problem with a tethering cellphone but that's not exactly a cheap or foolproof option.

All right, Steam testing.

Hardware: desktop machine, wired connection to router to cable modem
Software: STEAM loads on Startup.

Experiment:  Close STEAM completely, place cable modem in standyby, start STEAM.
Theoretical Result:  STEAM will attempt to connect, fail, ask me if I want to try Offline Mode.
Experimental Results: Able to Launch Steam Library game

As for how being wireless only on a laptop works, I don't have any hardware that I could test with.
