I already own TTYD but haven't purchased the VC version of the original.  Is it necessary, storywise or for some other reason to play the original first?

No need, separate stories, however, I would recommend the first before the second for nothing other than to see the evolution of the series. TTYD is awesome.

I had never played a PM game when I played Thousand Year Door and it was still a fantastic experience.

No. I have TTYD and didn't play the first one.  I had a good time.

I think the same goes for the Mario RPG games: there is no reason to play Super Mario RPG to just to play Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.  However, if you like the game, it's certainly worth checking out the older one sometime.

Paper Mario on VC is th best title i have bought for it,i am having a lot of fun......1000 year old door looks like more of the same.so i am definelty gonna pick that up,if its half as good i will be happy
