w00t!The Hunted: The Demon's Forge developer wants to use Kickstarter to fund a reboot of Wasteland, CEO Brian Fargo told IGN. Fargo, who recently acquired the rights to the classic PC RPG, is one of the creators -- apparently fans have been bugging him for a new game since they saw Double Fine achieve success. Soon after, Fargo was having meetings and mapping out a production schedule. seriously, I love Tim Schafer and Double Fine. they may have just helped many an old and dead franchise come back to life.

this is a great idea but I don't want them to burn us out on these projects. it's like what happened with the indie bundle.

Yeah, and not to sour anybody's milk, but I don't think inXile has nearly the cache of fan goodwill as Tim Schafer and Double Fine.

inXile might not, but what about Brian Fargo and Wasteland? I bet there's a tone of people who'd like to see a new Wasteland, even with retro style graphics and a turn based top down (or is it isometric? i can never remember which is which anymore) view.

We had that and a sequel already. Those were so beloved that it spawned a modern version in a different setting and another in the traditional setting.

inXile might not, but what about Brian Fargo and Wasteland? I don't want to turn this into a tear-down session, but what was the last great game that Brian Fargo was attached to? All I remember from recent times is the disappointing Bard's Tale reinvention. Which was 8 years ago.

interview on NMA with Brian Fargo: http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=60856Do you have any solid plans on what kind of engine to use, proprietary or otherwise, 2D or 3D?
We need to spend a bit more time investigating which engine we would use but it's unlikely to be an engine of our own. We need as much of the budget as possible to be spent on assets and design and not technology. Clearly this will be a top down game for the reasons I stated above. I would also like people to know that I am not personally going to take any salary from the money raised through Kickstarter. Those monies will be spent on only the team itself and any outside contractors we need to make the game.
so no 3D re-invention.

I'm much more pumped about this than the Tim Schafer project. Wasteland is near the top of my "Games I wish would get a remake/sequel" list. Now let's get someone on that Neuromancer remake.

From Brian Fargo's twitter feed - Would love to hear fan ideas for awards at the tier levels of $75, $100, $250 etc. $50 pledge is old school big box, manual and cloth map. If they make it gatefold like the original Wasteland, I'll definitely shell out $50.

they put out an update on the official site about some of the reward levels for contributing: The skill and weapon for supporters will not affect the game balance but will absolutely be entertaining Added a Wasteland 2 poster to a 'light' level Added a digital concept art book Did a solid pass on clarification of reward levels oh, and it will be DRM free.

I pledged $30 for now. Might up it later. I'd have paid more just for a new soundtrack by Mark Morgan, which makes the whole thing worth it on its own.

Although I never played the original Wasteland, I do respect that Fallout 1 and 2 are sort of its spiritual successors. I completed those and they were both brilliant. Pledged $30.

Both of those were favorites of mine on my commodore 128 running in 64bit emulation mode. The idea that I could drive to different cities, upgrade my car, compete in duels, and basically do what I wanted blew my mind at that age. I liked the moto too, Drive Offensively! I loved Wasteland too.

I just did $50. I loved Wasteland. One of my favorite games of all time. I can't believe they are already at $852,000, that's awesome. They have to be excited right now.

latest update: We have announced a major piece of good news today that inXile has reached an agreement with Obsidian for potential design assistance for Wasteland 2. What that means is that Obsidian’s Chief Creative Officer, Chris Avellone, is going to work with our team on the design and writing of the game! It is important to note that we say "potential" as they will come aboard assuming we hit $2.1 million in funding. The good news is that we have already seen a spike in just the few hours since this was announced in a press release this morning.
For those of you who don't know who Obsidian or Chris Avellone are, they are the bulk of the brains who worked on Fallout 1&2, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment when I was back at Interplay. More of the band is back together to make sure we bring you a fantastic RPG. Chris is going to help push the density and literary content of the game.
The original Wasteland was an important game to Chris as he recently stated, "Wasteland is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and when Brian asked if I wanted to work on the sequel, I jumped at the chance. While I've worked on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, getting the chance to work on the spiritual predecessor to the Fallout franchise is a honor."
While the programming work will remain with us here at inXile, we are looking to use a host of tools that Obsidian has created which will help us get assets into the game faster. The faster we can implement and iterate on content, the deeper the game and the more varied choices the gamers can make.
That’s more good news for all of you that put your faith in us.
Brian Fargo

That press release seems to be confusing a lot of people. What it says is this:
inXile will hire Chris Avellone to do design and writing. They will also license the development tools that Obsidian use.
In no other way will Obsidian be involved, apparently.

Late reply, but I completely agree Canuck. I never played the original Wasteland, although I have greatly enjoyed Fallout 1 through 3. But I kicked in some money in part because I really like the idea of funding some more traditional RPGs and not just creating what the suits in marketing say should be made.

Don't forget that they're accepting payment through PayPal as well, and with that included they are at approximately 2,8 million right now, with 18 hours left. It seems Kickstarters have a dramatic increase in backing during the final hours, so the odds are looking pretty good.

It seems my "prediction" is turning out to be correct. With 6 hours left, only $60,000 is needed to reach 3 million, and the distance is shrinking rapidly. I'd be surprised if we don't hit that goal.
