I saw this linked at QT3 and thought it was... interesting to say the least. Here's the GAF thread the information appears in: link. And it is from GAF so take it for what it's worth. Japanese Sales data 12/26 - 01/01 1. NDS Brain Training 2 414,556 NEW 2. NDS Animal Crossing DS 205,119 (1,382,228) 3. NDS Mario Kart DS 168,680 (836,478) 4. PS2 Kingdom Hearts 2 156,837 (884,428) 5. NDS Brain Training 153,189 (1,157,870) 6. PS2 Front Mission 5 146,209 NEW 7. NDS Mario & Luigi 2 132,726 NEW 8. NDS Gentle Brain Training 82,789 (935,535) 9. NDS Tamagotchi 63,433 (784,537) 10. NDS Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon: Blue Rescue Force 61,154 (572,858) DS - 390,181 PSP - 110,741 PS2 - 78,646 GBASP - 15,998 GC - 12,579 Xbox360 - 12,300 GBM - 11,234 GBA - 447 Xbox - 121 So to summarize: the GB Micro is tanking, the DS has 8 of the top 10 titles, the Japanese love training their brains, the freaking GameCube sold more than the Xbox 360 and the PSP has some serious catching up to do. I'd love to see some US sales figures.

Well, I've got this going for ya - its the sales chart from NPD for the entirety of 2005, and the hardware chart for December 2005.
1. Madden NFL 2006 (PS2) [2.900.000] 2. Pokémon Emerald (GBA) [1.700.000] 3. Gran Turismo 4 (PS2) [1.500.000] 4. Madden NFL 2006 (Xbox) [1.200.000] 5. NCAA Football 2006 (PS2) [1.100.000] 6. Star Wars : Battlefront 2 (PS2) [1.000.000] 7. MVP Baseball 2005 (PS2) [970.000] 8. Star Wars : Episode III (PS2) [930.000] 9. NBA Live 2006 (PS2) [820.000] 10. LEGO Star Wars (PS2) [800.000]
December 2005: PlayStation 2 [ 1.500.000 ] Portable PlayStation [ 1.120.000 ] Nintendo DS [ 1.070.000 ] Xbox [ 415.000 ] Xbox 360 [ 281.441 ]
...and people wonder why they get the same sports titles every year...

Brain training games are all the rage here. I've seen commercials for it. It makes great use of the stylus. Makes sense when you think how important education is for the kids. Instead of buying them a game, buy them something that will help them get into that famous highschool. My girlfriend thinks it's the greatest things. Unfortunately not quite great enough to make her go out and buy one

By the way this may sound stupid but is that first chart only for one week? That what it seems to say according to the date. Did they really sell 390,000 DS's in one week?

Anyone else surprised to see both Star Wars: Episode III and Lego Star Wars on that list? I figured the Ep III game would sell (I didn't expect top 10), but I had no idea the Lego game sold that well.

Well, it doesn't look like DOA helped the 360 that much (though it was only out for 4 days of that week). The DS, however, is rocking. Any idea of the total number of DS's sold in Japan so far?

While there is no doubt DS is kicking in Japan I continue to find it interesting that PSP and DS are so close in the US. When you consider the DS is half the price and that Nintendo aggressively bundled the system this holiday with major titles, they should be doing better here than just squeaking out a victory. That tells me that PSP will probably explode if Sony drops the price into a range more people find affordable for a handheld device.

I don't know if it's a stupid thing to say, but I've always seen holiday sales as "non gamer" sales. It's a "don't know what the hell to get Jimmy, maybe this'll do" kind of thing, and the PSP is flashy as hell. Sales throughout the rest of the year are better indications of a system's demand. As I've always seen it. But maybe that is a stupid thing to say.

The students at my school prefer the PSP because it's "cooler" than the DS. It's more flashy, it does more stuff, and it's more expensive. They think the games are better because they look better. Plus they can play GTA on it, which for a 13 year old is major cool points. Most of them would rather have a PSP but their parents refuse to buy it for them.

I am really suprised DOA4 didn't help the 360 more. Wow. It was only out for two or three days for the purposes of those charts, genius.
