There's a number of free themes that have no branding at all.  For example, the Rock Your Weekend theme that came out a week and a half ago is a bunch of very nice closeups of guitars.  Some that are branded aren't branded in an obtrusive way, like the Best Buy Halo 3 theme that came out a while ago.  I'm just saying that there are plenty of options to customize your desktop for free right now.  Would I like more?  Sure, but not having them doesn't make me sad at all.

Do people really care what theme their game console is displaying?  I can't believe people would pay money for that.  I can't even imagine going out of my way to download one.

It's not really any different from people customizing their Windows theme, is it?

d)  don't have to pay money to change how it looks

??

I think he's saying that most themes cost money to change on the 360.

Hey, how'd I wind up with all these free themes available to switch amongst on my 360 then?

There's so many free themes available that you really don't have to pay anything for them.  I've paid for one, and I immediately regretted it.  Since then, I've found many that are much better, and only use those.

Yes, because I want to roll with the Old Spice Experience Challenge Theme or the Doritos Unlock Xbox Theme.
Ugh. There are plenty of free game-related themes, and you can more or less roll your own as well.  Besides, most custom themes (for any platform - 360, Windows, PS3, Mac, etc.) look like ass anyway.

denoginizer, you do realize that lots of people like to change their Windows desktop pic around, right?  exact same thing as console themes

Point taken.  Although I generally stare at the computer's desktop more often than a console's.  If I'm not playing a game on the console I either shut it off or have the TV signal showing on the screen.  Especially on the PS3 where I almost never get messages or game invites from the dashboard.

m0dus over at NeoGAF has created about 10 themes in total that are each jaw-droppingly gorgeous.  I was ready for a barrage of crappy themes featuring scantily-clad women, but I cycle through his almost on a weekly basis.

m0dus made this one.

The icons are superb - I don't care much for the background, so I usually swap it.

To find all of m0dus' themes, open the web browser on your PS3, and go to www.allps3themes.com.

In the search bar, seach for "m0dus"

You'll find 13 themes.  Just click on the theme, then the download link...it'll download straight to your PS3 hard drive.  Exit your web browser, go to settings, then theme settings, and viola.

Or just navigate here and click this link: http://www.allps3themes.com/?s=m0dus

meh, red buttons on a red background isn't the best idea.  It's kinda like the Penny Arcade theme  for the 360- way too much background clutter makes it hard to see anything else.  I di grab the 360 one I linked to, and they got it down fairly well- even the sounds are the same.

They are releasing PhyreEngine, a free graphics engine that makes it easier to develop games on the PS3.  other than that I haven't seen much news from them.

Nope, nothing really.  Got some news on some games, but nothing like firmware updates.  Looks like Sony was just being a tease....

With Patapon this month, and Hot Shots Golf 5, MLB 08: The Show and the new Eye of Judgment expansion in March, I'm set, as well.

Well, I had a PSP before, but sold it in preparation for the slim, and to get a PS3.

So maybe not a system seller, but more like a strong reminder to rebuy my PSP so I can play Patapon.
