Not a big deal for 360 owners... but in-game XMB is something sorely missing from the PS3.  Could it be unveiled @ GDC...?

The "Achievement" image looks... suspicious...

1) What is XMB?

2) Wow, could they possibly make their "accomplishments" any MORE of a blatant achievements copy-cat? I liked the way the Home initiative originally talked about earning trophies & the like from games, and they'd be available to put in your awards room or display case or whatever. I thought it was awesome and put in kudos to Sony for that last spring (when Home was due last fall, btw). That showed taking a competitor's creative idea and putting your own even more creative spin on it.

But this? Lame. thumbsdown

It's kind of like the live blade that you can bring up on the 360 by pressing the Live button.  IMHO it has been sorely needed on the PS3 since launch.  In-game XMB would allow the user to check messages, view friend list, open up a chat session etc, all without exiting a game.

Oh yeah, that's big. They definitely need this on the PS3. I'd say the same about the Wii, but Nintendo doesn't believe in online community-building like Sony & MS realize customers want. icon_wink

I certainly don't miss it.  Why would I want to check the one message I get every 3 months in the middle of a game anyways.  And none of you bastards from GT on my list ever want to talk to me anyways  mad

As for achievements, I would certainly agree that they are lame-for any system.

Actually, it was a cultural difference that made them not consider in-game XMB early on (besides laziness).  In Japan they thought it would be rude for people to send messages or invites from other games while you were playing a different game.  They figured friends would just call each other.

Thing is, they didn't factor in player groups like this where most of us don't know each other that well.

Achievements are lame if they don't have any in-game tangible reward.  But, I do like them if they have some reward like in Mass Effect, Uncharted, or KIllzone Liberation.

Honestly, I don't see the deal with in-game XMB.  Whenever given the opportunity to get a group together for a game, it offers an option in-game.

See: Eye of Judgment (inviting players brings up your friends list), Call of Duty 4 (where a list of friends currently online in Call of Duty 4 shows when you go to invite someone), Unreal Tournament 3 (it shows if they're online in UT3), and Warhawk (shows if they are online, what game they're in, and you can join them).

Messaging players while in game would be nice, as well as a way to talk to players via private chat.  Honestly, it doesn't keep me up at night.

I'm not wild about achievements, but if they find a cool way to sorta showcase them in your house (maybe put up a plaque for all the games you've played), it would be cool.

As of right now if I'm playing UT3 and you are playing COD 4 can I invite you to join me without leaving UT3?  Can I even check to see if you are online without leaving the game?

XMB is critical for me.

I want to be able to fart around in an SP game until friend(s) I'm waiting for get online, and then be notified and be able to rec'v invites and switch over.

I wouldn't say Atari 2600.  Apple IIe maybe with everything being green...

They should let devs do their own style of achievements.  Imagine a terrorist killing game where whenever you unlocked an achievement a little GWB icon popped up saying 'Mission Accomplished!' with the achievement description.

I think it has more to do with the camera rez taking the picture than the PS3's menu output . . . the default icons (if you do not use a theme) are simple but are output at your display settings (1080p for me) so I have always though the menus looked very sharp . . .

a)  shitty camera

b)  shitty tv

c)  that's the ugly default theme

d)  don't have to pay money to change how it looks

And btw, I am no Chad Warden - I just like calling it the PSTriple.  It's fun!  That guy is an out-of-control duscheface.

So lets get back to talking about XMB and accomplishments... on the PS Blog, Jeff Rubenstein has pretty much said, "Oh this is GDC, not E3, so nothing big will be announced..."  So that's sad.   icon_frown

There's so many free themes available that you really don't have to pay anything for them.  I've paid for one, and I immediately regretted it.  Since then, I've found many that are much better, and only use those.

GDC so far:

Microsoft Keynote in about an hour or so... not supposed to have anything super new or revolutionary, but from what I've seen they're supposed to hit on Gears 2 a little along with some anticipated titles this year...

Nintendo already announced a bunch of stuff like WiiFit release date, some new Mario Kart Wii images / video and a good deal of WiiWare info.

Sony?  Echochrome stuff (which looks awesome) and...?  Let's hope some in-game XMB!

The thing is, users can create their own PS3 themes for free, no need for MS to release anything, free or pay, on Live.

I never understood this whole paying for marketing content thing, but some people will do it if they have no choice.  You want people to download and have this stuff as it keeps your game on their minds.

I would like if the 360 let you customize as much as the PS3 does, but really, you can use pictures off your computer for the wallpaper, and you can change the blade color around, so the only thing missing is changing the icons.  For me, from a usability standpoint, I wind up preferring uniform icons.  I have seeveral different themes on my PS3 at work, and some change all the icons.  I find those themes much harder to use because I then have to read each of the menu names (which only pop up when highlighted), so I wound up using a theme that changes the icons slightly, but keeps them mostly the same.

Yes, because I want to roll with the Old Spice Experience Challenge Theme or the Doritos Unlock Xbox Theme.

The screenshot in the OP is using the Retro theme, just one of the 10 or so free themes released by Sony.  Yes, Retro, to re-create that Atari/Apple II feeling.  So it was pretty effective in giving you guys that retro vibe, lol.

For a pretty neat page to browse themes created by the community, just hit allps3themes.com.  And if you're on the Triple, just use the Internet Browser - you can DL straight to your HD.  There are currently 1,201 free themes at that site.

Do people really care what theme their game console is displaying?  I can't believe people would pay money for that.  I can't even imagine going out of my way to download one.

1) I *love* my OSX theme on my PS3.  It makes me happy.

2) While I personally would have no use for it, I definitely understand the need for an in-game XMB.  You gotta match up with Live's ease of use in order to compete with it.  For a non online gamer like myself though, all I'm hoping for is the ability to fire up an MP3 mid game.
