So most games track the number of hours it takes for you to complete them. Right now I'm playing Mass Effect and I'm about 4 - 6 hrs in.  Gladius, KOTORs 1 and 2 each took me about 50-55 hrs to complete. Etc etc.

Call of Duty 4 tracks total time spent playing MP (including time in the lobby) and my time in that game is north of 10 days.  Quick disclaimer: it's pretty much all I played for 6 months, but that figure is still startling.

I wonder if my 360 tracked how many hours I've spent playing games since getting it in November of 2006 what that figure would be and whether or not it would make me sick to my stomach.

Now this isn't a thread about quitting games or are games a waste of time or how'd I'd be the next Eric Clapton if I'd spent that time learning guitar.

But I wonder if the meta number would convince me to play less.  What about you?

Edit: There was one guy on GT/OO/CG/GT who tracked every minute played. I wonder if he's still around and what his tallys are...

I don't think the console metanumber would scare me much.  I've settled into a pretty healthy balance between video gaming, friend and family interaction, and constructive activity like playing non-plastic guitars.  So while I'm sure it would start totalling some colossal scary number, knowing that the colossal scary number was built slowly and non-destructively would keep me from crying.

The /played number for MMORPGs, on the other hand, are scary things that I always avoided.

This is a true anecdote: I was still trying to decide if I thought Disgaea was a good game or not when I noticed the game clock for the first time and discovered I'd already been playing for EIGHTY HOURS. retard

Some might say that's about 3.5 days gone to complete waste, but I prefer to think of it as getting the most value out of my entertainment budget.  After all, you'd be hard-pressed to squeeze 80-hours of enjoyment out of $30 worth of books, movies, or long walks on the beach with a significant other.

Once you hit a certain number of hours played on the 360 it starts talking to you.  It started with that 360 automatic blog site and evolved into self-awareness.

I don't know if I would play less, but when the timer on COD4 MP rolled over to day 2, it was a "gulp" (adjust collar) kind of moment.

Yep, this is what I live by.  I could easily be a game nut, but that rule I made with my wife allows me to be guilt free of how much I play on a game or console.  Guilt free is awesome, but on the bad side of that rule I don't get to master many games and I definitely don't master any MP games like COD4.

Oh my, that icon for IkeVandergraaf is so wrong

Wouldn't matter to me.  I already know that I spend a ton of time gaming, and seeing some sort of timer on the screen wouldn't make any difference.

I do cringe a bit, however, when I think about how good I could be on my real drum set if I had spent as much time on it as I have with Rock Band.

I'm very lucky that my wife goes to bed very early- like 9pm or 9:30.  Meanwhile I usually hit the hay at about 1:30am on a work night so that still leaves lots of gaming time every night.

This is something I wish xbox live would do - give a list of every game you've played and playtime on that game.  I don't think it would make me play less - I am most interested in if I am getting good value for my money.  But maybe that is exactly what MS doesn't want you to be thinking about.

Yes, the Wii tells you on a daily basis, but doesn't allow you to add up the time unless you write down each day's total and manually calculate (which I actually did when I was done with Mario Galaxy, because I was curious).

I am dreading when I get old(er) and have to get more than 5 or 6 hours sleep a night to function. As is, while waking up is a bitch (I'm just not a morning person), a pot of coffee in the morning and a pot of coffee in the evening do me just fine.

yeah it can be scary to see the amount of time you play. I think in WOW I put 63 days into my rogue and I have only had it for a year. I actually stopped playing cause it is crazy when you think of the time put into that game.

I rarely look at the game tracking notes on the Wii, I don't really care to see how much I've played. I know I wouldn't play less, because I don't play a lot as it is, but I'd check it if I knowI just played a big stretch to see how long I really played.
