I've seen this echoed a few places - Are those games really that fun? I have a PS3 but never had a ps2 which is where they were released, right?

My opinion is probably in the minority, but here goes:

I played Ico to completion.  I enjoyed the setting/atmosphere and the whole companion aspect was interesting and endearing.  But it didn't really leave any lasting impression, and I've never had the urge to go back to it.

By the time I got to the third boss in Shadow of the Colossus, I had had enough.  Pure tedium, IMO.  Apparently it told a great story, but I got so frustrated by the control scheme and repetitive gameplay that I had no desire to continue.

ditto.  controls killed the game for me, and I'm pretty sure I put it down at the third boss.

Isn't Shadow of Colossus the most popular game suggested by gamers to convince Roger Ebert that games can be art?

fun?  that's a tough call...wouldn't say they're as much 'fun' as they are interesting experiences.  they focus more on artistry, atmosphere, and being a unique experience than having what most would probably consider 'fun' gameplay.  they're both neat games that i'm glad to have played, but they're definitely not for everyone.

There's a lot of crazy talk in this thread.  These games are both classics and I couldn't be more ready to hand over whatever amount of money they want from me for this HD version.

To be fair, I'll probably give SotC another shot, *if* they tweak the control scheme.

What were the issues with the controls?  I don't remember struggling with them.

Ico was wonderful.  The gameplay was nothing particularly special-combat couldn't get any simpler.  But the abandoned areas were haunting and while dragging a girl around by the hand all the time was annoying at the beginning I really grew to care for her and worried about the black things that would try to take her away.  My biggest regret is that I beat the final boss and then the game crashed on me so I never had a chance to see the final part frown
I only watched a friend play the first level of SotC but I would love to have a chance to play the game in hi-res.  If it's true that the two games will be sold together for only $40 then I will be all over that like _________ on ___________(insert your own simile here).

Shadow of The Colossus, of all games, is one deserving of re-release treatment on the PS3. I really felt like that game in particular was a next-gen game straddled down by current-gen technology. I'm all for this.

Shadow is a great puzzle game, but the story doesn't kick in until the 8th monster. I think the next story update is monster 12, and then during the finale. It's more an experience than a game, but if you didn't take to it at first then you might not get a whole lot more out of it. Looking at it objectively, there's not a lot to it. But I still loved it and would kill to play it in full HD provided that a) I had a PS3 and b) an HDTV to go with it.

And this is coming from someone who loved the game, so please don't misunderstand me. The game is so understated in so many ways that it leaves a lot open to your imagination.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I would think you played for like what, an hour?  How tedious can that be?  Tongue

I really liked SotC although I didn't quite finish it.  It's not enough to make me get a PS3, but its a step in that direction.

granted my memory of ico is measured in years and not months, i'd say it looks pretty good but not revolutionary.

as for sotc, the viewing distance seems greatly improved but the shot doesn't give you any idea how much they improved the detail.

i really hope they have a better improvement or tbh, i won't pick this up.  i finished ico back in the day and still have my bc ps3 and sotc in the box if i want to play it.

I just want a solid framerate for SotC. I think a lot of the trouble people had with the controls were as much from the poor performance causing lag in the controls and animation, making it difficult to really get the "feel" of the controls down.

Improved framerates even helped the GoW collection's trickier segments.

Looks good, but that trailer feels as slapped together as the box art does.  I hope that's not an indication of how little effort they're putting into it.

This is from the Gamespot:

Quote
In terms of changes to the games, Ico will feature the European ending rather than the US one (which Ueda was never happy with, instead calling the European version "the complete game"), while Shadow of the Colossus will supposedly be remedied of the inconsistent frame rate that plagued the PlayStation 2 version. Ueda was very specific when he said that the PlayStation 3 will allow Shadow to run at a steady 30 frames per second as the studio originally intended it to. We were shown a live demo of the Shadow remake, and it certainly seems that the game is running smoothly. In addition, Ueda also pointed out that Shadow features completely redone textures to go along with the bump up to HD resolutions. Though it was hard to get a great sense of the visual fidelity due to the game being shown on a projector, it looked quite good for being half-decade old PlayStation 2 title.

No... that would be Ico...   nod

I'm definitely IN! for Ico - with my memory, it will be like playing an entirely new game anyway, so it's a winner.  *(Note to Backlog:  "Begone by Spring!")

it definitely looks better in some sections, but i hope they make the up close ground and ruins textures better.  that second shot was distracting with the platform under his feet.

Yeah I worded that wrong, haha.

I meant I would have figured that for such an old game like SotC, a PS3 can run that at 60fps.  Wasn't the God of War collection at full 60fps?

Sure it does, the 9th core is powered by The Force.  They only need to disable it via firmware update to make the system faster.

It can be argued that sotc wouldn't benefit from 60fps as much as gow did and get a much bigger boost from using the resources for draw distance and higher res textures.

was the framerate really that bad for SotC on the PS2?  i played both Ico and SotC on my backward-compatible PS3 and as far as i can remember,  they ran very smoothly.  i know they likely pulled a lot of programming tricks to get the graphics that they did out of the PS2 and that may be difficult to translate to different hardware, but put me in the group that thinks a decent framerate really shouldn't be that hard for the PS3 given the massive increase in processing power...
