I saw a couple of used copies of Ico at a local gaming store and I remember hearing the game mentioned as being really interesting. For those of you who have played it, is it worth 18 bucks? Does the gameplay stand up to todays standards?

A lot of people loved it. I am not one of them. I will grant that it's unlike any game you've ever played though so I'd definitely grab it for the experience.

Buy it. Play it. Absorb it. The game is like a quite meditation. Simple. Calm. Wonderful. An ending like no other. (Do not skip past the credits)

Ico 2 never was made, and yes, Shadow of the Colossus is by the same developer. While the two games (Ico and SotC) look quite similar, and explore some of the same themes, they're not related to each other (or so says the developers of SotC). Oh, and yes, Ico is a fantastic (if short) game. One of those titles you'll remember long after finishing it if you let yourself get fully absorbed into the game.

I'm curious about Ico still, even though I tried SoTC and quite honestly just didn't care for it. It seemed like a good game, but if you are like me and Hate boss battles, it probably isn't the game for you.

They really are only similar in the sense that both feel sort of arty and really paint a unique atmosphere. Ico is very much a platformer at heart with some very minimal (and relatively crappy) combat. You can really see that a lot of the inspiration for the Prince and Farah's interaction in PoP: Sands of Time came from the way the two characters in Ico interact. In terms of boss battles, I can only recall one in Ico and that's at the very end and isn't particularly frustrating.

Once thing I've seen is that everybody has their own opinion on these games. Some love one of them, some love both of them, and others (thankfully few) hate them both.
I'm in the love them both crowd.

Well crud, they only had one copy left and it looked pretty scratched up, so I'm holding off for now. Thanks for the info though- next time I see a decent copy I'll snag it.

I know it's blasphemous, but I didn't like either Ico or SotC. I could certainly appreciate the artistry and creativity that went into them, but they just bored me to death.

And for what it's worth, though I'm infinitely happy to own a copy of Ico, you could probably rent it and finish it within a weekend, if you're given enough time for a solid gaming sesh. It'd easily be beaten within a week.
And Shadow is a great game too - cheap now as well! - and again worth a rental, if not a purchase.
