Hi there.

It's time for my annual November "I'm Bored" post (formarly at GG) which usually results in me getting a recommendation for something really good that I missed or overlooked. Here's what's on the HD right now...

SMAC
RoN
Civ III Conquests
MOO 2
RCT 2
Heroes 3
Freedom Force
Freedom Fighters
FarCry
Half-Life
Diablo 2:LOD
Total Annihilation
Sacred
AoE
TOEE
Space Colony
Imperialism 2
Sims 2
Prince of Persia: SOT
Evil Genius
Rome: Total War

I must be nuts to be bored with this much gaming goodness on my HD. I think I'm just looking for something new and refreshing, you know, a change. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for the tips so far.

I played Fallout Tactics already, as well as Gothic, but I couldn't get over the awful control scheme and never finished it. I've never tried Freespace, maybe I'll go check it out.

As for Dominions LE, I've never seen either one in stores anywhere, where can I find them?

Thanks.

You can't find it in stores, you have to buy it online.

This is one of my favorite strategy games, by the way.  I'd highly recommend it to anyone who can get past the graphics (which are more forgiveable when you realize that the game was made by two people).  And, I'd also like to add that I haven't ever played it multiplayer, I've had plenty of fun just playing single player as usual.

One thing I'd thoroughly recommend with Dominions 2 is playing the demo in order to get an idea of what the game is like.  There is quite a bit of game just in the demo, and if you get hooked on that (as I did) you'll spring for the full thing.

Man, you have some good games on that list.  I don't know anything that I could recommend over what you have right now.

:puts on salesman suit:

Well, you can buy/trade for my copy!  Honestly I'm trading it off because it's far too addictive, and I've got tons of college work to do...  I think I was involved in something like 10 PBEM/server games at a time, just because I couldn't get enough of the game.  Know that the single-player AI is pretty weak, though--the game is so deep that short of highly scripted behavior, no AI could put up a good fight.  It's good to learn with though!

The game is not carried in stores.  You have to order it off the internet.

http://www.illwinter.com is the homepage for Dominions 2's developers, and has plenty of links for your perusing.

LOL @ Greggy D... that's just my list of what's installed... my "useable on this machine" collection is just short of 100 CD's.

The last couple times I posted my "bored" message I discovered KOTOR (dunno how I'd missed that) and MAFIA, two of my top 10 favorite games of all time.

EDIT: Whoa I missed two posts while I was writing this.. thanks LE, and thank everyone so far.

I can't believe I forgot about Children of the Nile... mmm

Yes I've got Div Div, played it until the "you know what" part and got mad at it. Maybe I should give it another spin?

Argh... no I think I'm really looking for something NEW...

Ahh yes... AoW: Shadow Magic... maybe I should re-install that one. I only got as far as the third campaign mission and despite reading strategy guides and trying it over and over again, I couldn't beat it.

Now where did I stash my copy of AoW:SM? I'd love to do some pointy-eared freak bashing hah hah!

NO DOOM3???  NO DOOM3???

Seriously, you didn't have any interest in Doom3?

Sure some people find it easy to slag it and say it's not this or that, but at a bare minimum it's got the ability to make people turn on the lights when they play it and it's got some of the best graphics in a pc game this year.

I think it's a "must play" for 2004.

Yeah I much preferred FarCry over Doom 3. I traded Doom 3 for Rome: Total War and I consider it to be my best trade of the century so far.

Problem with FarCry was it got too tough, even on easy near the end, so I never saw the last 10% of it.

Doom 3 was the most beautiful, well-shadowed, atmospheric and intense piece of shit I've played this year. But no matter how gorgeously you render it, it's still a piece of shit.

Gameplay is #1, everything else is just coffee & doughnuts. Nice to have, but you can live without them.

Far Cry too hard??? I'm pretty sure I played it on the medium setting and I thought it was just fine.  It took me roughly 20 hours to beat with only 2 or 3 spots being really hard, one of them being the last little section which is supposed to be hard.  Even so, it never took me more than say 5 tries and 10 for the last one to beat.  Overall, it was very fun and amazing graphically.

As for Gothic 1 and 2 mentioned earlier, once you get used to the control scheme (not very long) it's a blast!  Definitely an honorable mention for my greatest games of all time list, and one of the best RPG's I've ever played.

I'm not sure what the "you know what part" of Divine Divinity is (its been about 6 months since I beat it) but I thought that it too was very fun and comical, though from time to time it got tedious.

If you liked Rise of Nations and didn't get the expansion pack, get that.  It makes the game seem all new and shiny again.  Sucked me in for a couple more months after I got that.  Lots of cool new campaigns to play, and several interesting new nations.

I just picked up RoN Gold and it's excellent so far.

 I think we agree, LE. I wouldn't say the program sucks, just the idea that it's a "game" that really stinks. It is a beatifully rendered tech demo with a basic (and *VERY* lacking) interface. Maybe Id needed to wish upon a star. It worked for Pinoccio; there's no reason why Doom3 couldn't turn into a *real* game.

Speaking of wood, how about shinying up your crowbar? You've only got another 2 weeks to wait for HalfLife2.

Oh, it's beautiful program.  Runs pretty well, looks pretty in the first area (since there are functional lights), and sports some bitching monitor-rendering techniques.  Sadly, Notepad is a better game than Doom 3.

Yeah, I agree. The game is well paced until that last level. I put the game in god mode just to see the end. My head was exploding trying to finish that game without it. I like my head intact.

There's a pretty specific strategy you need to use at the end of Far Cry-it's still not easy but it makes it doable. After 10 failed attempts I figured out what I needed to do and it only took me 2 more smile

Fallout2, xcom1, xcom:acoc, bg2, bg tutu mod that combines all of the bgs so you can play them all in the bg2 engine for the 200+ hours that they all probably total, gothic 2, fallout 3 (i still stupidly hope that this will be released and not just be a ufo:aftermath abuse of a great series)...

half life 2 also sounds good, but valve doesn't have the track record to prove that halflife 1 wasn't just luck so i wait for reviews.

Yeah, basically at this point I'm looking for something fresh to tide me over until Half-Life 2 comes out. I ususally take hype with a grin of salt but when I saw the technology demo video, I nearly crapped in my pants. I think even the most jaded, unsatisfiable gamer will be impressed by Half Life 2.

Oo, I think I played that one... isn't that the spiritual sequel to Edlin? I hear they have a unix port for it now, and they upped the difficulty level. Check out VI. slywink I can't wait for VII.

A seond vote for Painkiller. Much more fun than Doom 3. I'm looking forward to the Painkiller expansion due out next week.

If you like strategy gaming, you might want to give Knights of Honor a look. I imported it via GoGamer since a US version of the game is not currently planned. I am really enjoying it. There is a demo available if you want to try it out. The reviews I've seen have also been pretty favorable.
