So every 2-3 months I get an impulsive urge to buy a Wii, I'm having one of those urges again now that my summer courses are near an end and assumed that by now they would have to be readily available. I guess I assumed wrong because I can't find them anywhere, I've checked the main outlets online which all report they are sold out as well as called some local Gamestops who are also sold out. Amazon.com is selling them at inflated prices. With the exception of visiting places like Best Buy and Target on a consistent basis until I get lucky, is there any rational way of becoming a Wii owner? I just wanna go out and buy one when I FEEL like doing so!  icon_confused

Craigslist is probably the best way.  Most folks don't figure in the sales tax they paid for the Wii when they sell it, so the inflated price may not be as bad as it seems.  I bought a Costco bundle a while back that only ended up being $9 over what I would have paid at Costco with the sales tax.

I still have yet to see a Wii in stock in any store in San Diego even now....

Simple for me really; I bought mine on launch day.  Despite arriving at a Walmart at 5 am, I still had to fork out $25 for the 20th spot out of 40. And I count my lucky stars to this day that I got that chance. icon_wink thumbsup
Since then I've heard of, or seen, them in stock in my city on only 3 different occasions.

Yeah but I want a Wii so I can join the rank of casual gamers. Its actually interesting because I had decided to take a few years break from gaming for a few reasons, one was because I didn't want them to distract me while I'm in school and two I simply wasn't getting much enjoyment out of them, I was basically playing compulsively trying to hold on to the shred of joy I used to get from them growing up and it wasn't worth the time. It actually made me a bit jaded. So I hadn't played any video games for nearly two months until this past weekend where I stayed at my friend's house for a few days. While I was there I loaded up a bunch of old games I had played through before like Uncharted and AC, I played a bit of MGS4, and felt quite satisfied that I wasn't missing anything. Then I booted up the Wii and played SMG for a bit and was having a ball, its like not playing video games for a while refreshed my brain and I was finding immense enjoyment out of the simple fun of a Mario game. I decided that there may still be room for video games in my life but on a very casual level. So, here I am looking for a Wii  icon_biggrin

heh, I have a hard time considering it 'casual' gaming if you have to do so much work to even get the system in the first place slywink

I happened to be at my local BB Sunday morning and was surprised how many people were there, seeing as how the store had only been open for 4 minutes. Turns out they had about 60 Wiis come in and pretty much everyone was there for one. They were gone in 15 minutes.

I still haven't seen one "in the wild".

Ive had one since launch and the only exclusive games I would call must haves are Wii Sports, Mario Galaxy, and Smash Bros.

Sorry but it is what it is.

I'm curious what games are prompting Ridah to consider a Wii purchase.

How is what you think suddenly a representation of what the general populous feels?  My Wii game collection is pretty large and I have traded some games back.  I know plenty of non-gamers who own far more than 3 games.

I'm not really referring to the general populous.  I was referring to Ridah.  From what I know about him, admitedly only through board posts, I doubt he would find alot of games worth playing on the Wii.  As for the general populous, hell if I know what they feel.  Somehow Titanic made $400 million and Britney Spears has sold millions of albums.  I've given up trying to understand that stuff.

I got one! I did a bit of calling around and found that a Costco about 45 minutes away from me had a shipment in transit. I got there about half an hour after they opened and surprisingly a third of the palette was already gone. Anyhow, it came bundled with SMG and Wii Play and I'm having fun with it. I don't ever intend to play Wii Play so I'll be selling that.

The lineup is pretty sad for the remainder of 2008, hopefully Nintendo's unannounced title turns out to be something worth looking forward to.

As far as games I'm interested, at some point I intend on picking up Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Okami, RE4, FF Fables, Super Paper Mario, No More Heroes, and maybe a few others.

I was at Target today and saw 10 Wiis in the case.  The salesman said that they have been getting large shipments twice a week lately and they usually don't sell out until the next day.

Well...if you fail by not doing your homework, then I'd say Grue is right; you failed! There's actually twice as many AAA quality exclusives for the Wii than what you suggest and in fact the Wii has just as many, if not more, top quality exclusives than the 360 or PS3. Here they are:

Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Metroid Prime 3
Super Paper Mario
Zak & Wiki.
Bloom Box

I'm tempted to add Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess as the 7th game on that list, because the GameCube hasn't been available for purchase for quite some time. Not to mention that you won't get a gaming experience like No More Heroes, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 [Wii], Resident Evil 4 [Wii] or Mario Kart on any of the other consoles.

BTW If you don't understand why Titanic grossed that much cash, then you also fail at understanding popular culture.   Tongue

I mentioned Smash Bros already.  Mario Kart is better on the DS IMHO. No More Heroes is terrible IMHO, and RE4/ Okami are not exclusives.

So yeah.  Only three games (slywink)

Well I've already mentioned 2 of the 5 games you listed.  Also you label Zak and Wiki and Boom Blox as AAA quality exclusives.

They are OK as rentals if you are having people over I guess.  But AAA games?   Please.

The Wii is the 1st console I have ever owned for almost a year and have purchased less than 5 games on.  And by the looks of the rest of 2008's releases it doesn't look like that is going to change.

I saw a handful of Wii's at Best Buy tonight. So, for my experience it is now much, much easier to buy a Wii than it is to buy Mario Kart for the Wii. (Yes I am bitter.)

Why must you fail again?  Zak and Wiki isn't even multiplayer.  Both of these games are indeed AAA games.  They are actually some of the best games on the Wii and have gotten incredible feedback from the gaming community.  I'm sorry you regret your Wii purchase.  I hold mine right up along side my 360 and PS3.  Each platform has some great titles and, for me, the PS3 is the one I have the least titles for.  However, the titles I do have for the PS3 have been great.

Not that it matters but I usually rent Zack and Wiki when my two nephews come over.  They like to play it even though it has no multiplayer.  I've tried to play it myself but it doesn't appeal to me.  Yes it has gotten good reviews but it hasn't sold that well in comparison to other games on the Wii.  It is not a AAA game in my opinion.

It's not like I enjoy pointing out the lack of quality games on the Wii (and the PS3 for that matter.)  Indeed I wish there were more.  But I posted that there are no good games on the Wii and people have responded with Zack and Wiki, Boom Blox, and a few DS/PS2 ports.  None of which has changed my mind.

I don't exactly regret my Wii purchase.  It does get alot of use when we have people over.  But I can't imagine the Wii being my only console.

Metroid
Zelda TP
Mario Galaxy
No More Heroes
Resident Evil 4 (yeah I know its on the PS2 and GC, but the Wii one is superior)
Tiger Woods 08 (soon to be 09) (If you're a golf fan).
Super Smash Brothers Brawl

I know some of these were listed before, but those are the ones I found to be the best.

Umm, Wii Sports?  There are approximately fourteen people on the planet that don't love it.  Mario Kart Wii?

Also, Battalion Wars 2 is very good.  And there are a bunch of other 'maybe not 9.0+ but fun' games, like GHIII, GH:Aerosmith, Wii Play, Nights, Mercury Meltdown Revolution, Warioware, Mario Party, Wii Fit, etc.

So we're up to what, 20-something now?

Excellent:
Wii Sports
Mario Kart
Mario Galaxy
SSBB
Zelda: TP
Battalion Wars II
Metroid Prime 3
No More Heroes
RE4
Zak & Wiki
Boom Blox
Okami

Good:
Mario Strikers Charged
Super Paper Mario
GHIII
GH:Aerosmith
Wii Play
Link's Crossbow Training
Mercury Meltdown Revolution
Wii Fit
Galaxy Wars
PuzzleQuest
Nights: Journey Into Dreams
Mario & Sonic & the Olympics

In short, Fail.

PS - Still got an extra Wii.  smile

I don't understand this whole argument, lol, about the lack of games for the Wii, or about the so-called "casual" gamer.  Seems to me that if you enjoy a console, and you enjoy enough games on it to make the cash outlay be worth it TO YOU, then it's a success.  And if you only use it for company, that's okay too.  Who hasn't spent money enough to add up to a Wii, on such things as fancy dinners, wine, patio dining sets, better gas grills, etc., etc., just to share with company?

I like to have all the consoles available so I can play any game I want to at that time.  Could be Boom Blox or Wii Bowling one day, Halo or Mass Effect another day, or sometimes all-day long playing with the latest game addiction.  I've hardly touched my PS2 except to let company play it, for probably 2 years - but I've been playing Final Fantasy 12, day and night for weeks now (months, maybe icon_wink).

And trust me, Wii players are not all casual gamers, whatever that means these days.  Have you not watched anyone Bowl or play Tennis, or do Wii Fit?  We have to move the coffee table completely away from the couch so that people can do their whole wind-up for bowling, and their super smash serves on Tennis.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about what is exclusive on the Wii - due to it's unique controls, almost every game on the system can be "considered exclusive."  I was unable to play RE4 on the GameCube, due to the camera and run-and-gun issues I had, but can manage it on the Wii.  The camera and character motion are the same on the Wii, but the method of using them made the difference.

If you're never going to use a Wii (or XB/360, PS2/3) then sell yours or don't buy one, lol.  If you use it often enough to "use up" it's purchase price - think of other entertainments you pay for like movies, cable, laptops, etc. - then it's all good.  IMO, of course.

I'm with you, Mytocles.  I don't particularly care if the Wii isn't someone's bag.  It's the crazy assertion that there aren't any (or many) good games for the system that gets me a-respondin'.   ninja
