What should I play....

Star Wolves - Never played but have it installed.
Freelancer - Played it when new but never finished it.
Wing Commander Prophecy - Played and finished it when new.

I have the space fighting itch. Im leaning a little more towards Freelancer right now.

I'm having a hard time recommending any of the three.  Star Wolves didn't look good enough for me to try, and I didn't particularly like Prophecy.  I liked Freelancer ok, but I didn't like the end missions enough to recommend a replay just to see the ending.  There's gotta be something good you haven't played yet.

How about something from the Freespace 2 Source Code Project?

Yes, there are a ton of fantastic mods for Freelancer.  I just did this a year ago when my old rig was on it's last leg.  She went out with a bang.

Lancer's Reactor makes you become a member to do anything there.

Any mods I should Google for?...graphics or ships / weapons ones? Or patches for that matter.

Maybe Ill join then.

On the web all I can find is mods for another mod called Freelancer TNG. But I dont want all that stuff added. Mainly just graphics and weapons or so. I started playing last night and ran the first 2 missions. Seems easier to play now than back then. I think the trouble then was I was a joystick user. I was not used to the mouse in a space sim. But now I use it for everything so no big deal.

I do remember HATING how pirates would ALWAYS pull you out of the warp tunnel. Got tired of that taking me so long to get somewhere.

Think Ill go ahead and reinstall Prophecy also and make my choice after playing each a bit.

Finished that one too. Though it got so tough I had to cheat on the last 2 or 3 missions. It was great fun but IW 1 was much better. Id play it but it requires a 3dfx card. The software renderer plays horridly and looks awful.

Dark Star One.  It's Freelancer light.  The Economy is a little more dynamic, and the ability to upgrade your ship as you'd like it is a fun feature.

By the games end I have a 4 turret cruiser that would mow down ships while I used special weapons to finish them off.

also a good one.

how about x3 post the last patch?  i hear it makes the game a lot more starter friendly and adds more to the game than just the open sandbox.  it also looks awesome.

starshatter is another one i tried a while back but never got in to.

escape velocity is often compared to space rangers in part because they are both 2d top down games.  EV is more action oriented though and i always got a star control combat vibe from it, but it also has a pretty wide range with combat, trading, missions, and ship upgrades.  played EV nova a few years back and bought it up but i haven't seen what they are up to these days.  there was a demo iirc.

Well I finally got Prophecy to run..sorta. The movies were running at 1,000,000 MPH until i turned my sound accel all the way down. Now the movie and ship parts play ok..little stutter here and there, but the main problem now is the flight sim part. It looks HORRIBLE. I only have a choice of software or d3d. The game was made with 3dfx in mind. Also theres no res to choose from. The graphics are all blocky and ugly as sin. Plus I dont have a crosshair. How the hell am i supposed to aim??

On the other hand, Freelancer gave me zero trouble at all.

I dont recall Prophecy being so butt ugly all those years ago. I recall it being damn nice looking.

Ok it seems im playing both Prophecy and Freelancer at the same time. I got Prophecy to look good by installing a GLIDE wrapper. Now has good graphics along with effect like fog and lens flares. remember those? Man they went crazy with lens flares back in the day. The only downside to Prophecy seems to be the amount of enemies they throw at you. In all the Wing Commander games before it you might encounter 3 ships at nav 1 none at nav 2 and 3 more at nav 3. in Prophecy its like 15 at nav 1 10 at nav 2 and another 15 at nav 3. the whole time Maniac is yelling about how good he is and another one for the Maniac and then when you auto fly away froma  nav he says Form up noobs! ugh.

May just start Star Wolves too smile

The Star Wars ship pack for Freelancer is well done and fun.
You can also upgrade with weapons and shields to even the odds if you are more into trading than fighting or just want to explore without being blasted to hell every 5 minutes.

WC Prophecy has a hi res patch that improves the appearance on today's machines.

Homeworld Cataclysm with the patch is very playable as well as fun although you are not contolling the fighters from the cockpit.

TACHYON  is always a crowd pleaser and worth a revisit.

DarkStar One not bad but lost me halfway through.probably because you main character is wrather lackluster.

X3, played them all but too slow to get to where the fighting is actually fun. Lack of a realistic slot view is a real detriment as well for an old flight simmer like me.

Star Shatter there are parts that are really engaging but poor sound and a rather lifeless universe lost my interest early.

Rogue Squadron still fun and looks pretty good still.

Liked both the I-Wars, but may not be exactly what you are looking for.

Then of course the old standbys, Freespace 1 and 2.

I also have Echelon, which has some great moments. but I found the controls sloppy.

I think the search for the perfect combat/space/flight simm is still on.

Well I just added the hi res graphics patch. Now my sim portion looks great...but my movies are low res again. They dont fill the screen and they are interlaced. Im afraid to fool with trying to get them hi res full screen again for fear of messing up the gameplay part. Ill just leave it alone.

I'd have recommended the first Homeworld but Freespace is a good choice. I never gave it the time it deserved. Wouldn't mind reading some impressions from your current gameplay, for old time's sake,

Well I just finished Prophecy and have started the free addon Secret Ops. Its a stand alone game. I had some trouble getting Prophecy going. The videos played so fast if I blinked they were over. I found that turning down my sound accel to zero fixed them. Then my in game graphics were horrible. Installing a glide wrapper fixed that. Everything went well till I saw there was a high res texture pack out there. It did make the game look better but it messed up my high res movies. I could never fix them without ruining the game portion so I had to settle for half size interlaced movies. But not a big deal. I was surprised at how few cutscenes Prophecy actually had. I thought it was fill with them like WC 3 and 4. But I guess there was a total of  6 or so interactive ones. From then on  there was no one to speak to in the bar, the CAG would use one of maybe 3 or 4 canned movies when Id click a missions then the view would go to a wire frame pad view to describe the mission itself , then back to one of maybe 4 canned movies as I went to my ships. Same with returning from a mission. It was kinda bland actually. Nothing like I remembered. I cant even believe this is a 1997 game. 11 years old?!!! It felt like Id played it only 5 or 6 years ago at most. Damn time flies.

The missions began to run together.Either I was on a bombing run or fighter duty. Id kill 12-18 or so bug ships per mission . by the end I had over 500+ kills on the kill board. I was pushing myself to finish. It took me 3 days of off and on play to finish Prophecy. My memory really sucks it seems when it comes to how good an old game was. Maybe at the time it was much better than now. Im spoiled I guess these days. though I would LOVE a new space sim.

Now Im onto Secret Ops. More of the same really it seems with some new weps and ships. then maybe Freespace 1 and 2 or Star wolves..not sure.

EDIT: I swear these are the cheapest produced Wing Commanders they made. Now I remember one more reason I didn't think this was as good as previous ones..the AI. The alien ships would just flip flop and dart around at 100000mph. I can have a bead on one and fire and it seems to know right when im doing it and darts off in the opposite direction instantly. Crazy.

A summery of my first 3 missions in Sectret Ops..
1. Fly scout - found and destroyed 22 or so aliens.
2. Incoming! rush to flight deck - kill 18 or so aliens.
3. Escort home ship through 3 nav points - killed maybe 15 at EACH one.
Now my next mission is another incoming! type one where they want me on flight deck asp. Lol...I am having some fun but come on..this is repeditive to the max.

If EV Nova would finally lower in price, I might try it. I am thinking about getting Freespace off of GoG, as I never got to play it and the graphics still look pretty darned good for the age of the game. I know that one can mod it to make it even better, any suggestions. I don't even know if GoG versions can be modded, but I suspect so. I just finished Fallout 1&2 with GoG versions to prepare myself for Fallout 3 (and it actually does help, storywise).

I bought X3:Terran Conflict, and it does seem to be more user friendly out of the gate. Also, it seems less reliant on the Joystick, which is good for me as I am traveling and don't have a good joystick. The game is HUGE, and is as much an space economic sim as it is a space combat sim. You can literally set up a trade empire with space stations, space factories, and a fleet of automated freighters. As far as freedom is concerned, X3 is the top. You can own and fly all sorts of ships, space stations, and go to war, peacefully trade, explore, build up an empty system with your own buildings, and do pretty much anything. Very deep but also difficult to get into, with a large learning curve (like all of the X series).

Tell us more about Star Wolves. I thought it looked a bit like a dumbed down Homeworld, from the demo. I would love to be proven wrong if other people have more positive things to say about it.

Dont know a lot about Star Wolves. only played the demo. Have the game installed just haven't tried it. You have an old converted cargo ships which you and your merc squad have turned into a battlewagon. You start with yourself and your buddy from the war or something. you hire more pilots and can buy a hanger full of fighters.  You get to upgrade the pilots and their ships plus your battlwagon. sensors, guns, turrets, engines..whatever. Then its up to you. take missions, earn scratch and improve it all. theres planets and stations and jumpgates and such. Seems pretty detailed and deep.

I was wondering how long it'd take for someone to mention Freespace 2!

Honestly one of the best space sims I've ever played.. the singleplayer campaign was near perfection, IMO. You'd always get a decent group of squadmates and went on missions from protecting convoys to attacking enemy capital ships (which were HUGE!) I had a blast playing that game.. and outside the official singleplayer campaign there were a ton of 3rd party maps available. I remember one map had HUNDREDS of fighters on each side (all of this is played in first-person type of space combat btw) mad chaos watching and being part of all the incredible warfare.

And if it's only $6 now (it used to be impossible to find, at least at a normal price) it's a steal.
