Hey all... need some help remembering something that has gathered serious dust in my brain.

I am trying to remember the name of a game that I played (or tried to) when I was really young.  I don't have much to go on, but some of you guys are pretty damn deductive, so here it goes:

1.  It was a computer game, or at least partially a computer game.  Maybe a computer/board game hybrid.  (sorry, it was a LONG time ago).
2.  It had to be in the neighborhood of 1982, give or take 4 years.
3.  It had to be either Commodore 64 or Apple II.
4.  It was a space game - I am going to guess adventure/rpg type.
5.  The most memorable thing about the game was that when you chose your character, you got a sealed "booklet" that gave a character background, describing personality, motivations, and maybe even your starship.
6.  I'm thinking the game may have been a competition of some type between the players (characters) - but I am almost positive it occurred in space.
7.  I think it came in a pretty big box, not unlike what you might see in today's Collector Edition versions of games.

Is that enough, cause honestly, that's about all I remember.  Any clues at all?

i know what this is, but i can't remember the name. it came out in the mid-80s... i think i remember it retailed for $89.99? and it did come in a huge box. and it was entirely text, wasn't it? that was the purpose of the gameboard that came with it, so you could track your movements...

going to drive me crazy, now that i can't think of what it was called.

Star Saga: One? http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-saga-one-beyond-the-boundary

I recall seeing this but as hitbyambulance mentioned I recall it being expensive so never tried to buy it.

There was another board game/computer game hybrid I did have for the Apple //e. I can't think of the name of. It was a fantasy setting with knights and you had to joust and stuff. I think there were mini-arcade style games you played on the computer and depending upon how you did you got to move x number of spaces on the board.

Ah found it: Chivalry http://www.mobygames.com/game/apple2/chivalry

Holy Shit - it WAS Star Saga!!!

Like I said - you guys are amazing.   Thank you!!!!

Although - like stated above, it says the game was released in 1988, making me 18 at the time.  I thought I was a lot younger than that when I tried to play it....   icon_neutral

Edit to add:  And looking at the wiki - the guy that made Wizardry (the first computer game I remember playing for any real length of time) was a dev. on Star Saga.  Amazing.
