AND I HATE FANBOATS!
Is this entire game a giant river race vs. helicopters?
Seriously - What The Fuck? I don't spend every waking moment playing this game, so forgive me if I'm overly upset.
My game experience so far (weak spoilers blah blah apparently I've barely started, I HOPE!): Intro, meet people, get crowbar, and the rest of the game so far...
Pilot boat to some obstacle while being chased by a helicopter, overcome a somewhat land-based obstacle, repeat.
I am SICK of the fucking boat! LET'S GO, GAME! MORE PLOT (or at least MORE COMBAT!!) LESS FILLER!
I am quickly becoming less enamoured of HL2. The Florida antics had better end soon.

I actually liked the boat. It's the next vehicle section that made me mad.

I had a blast with the boat and no, the boat is not the entire game. Quite a bit to follow.

The boat was awesome! I'm sorry that you don't like it though. There is lots of running and gunning once you get past it.
Try and enjoy the boat rather than wishing for the rest, it really is a fun section of the game.

Stopping to think about it, the boat was probably one of my favorite sections of the game. It really impressed me how well-designed the "optional" stops were.

I hated the airboat as well but rather enjoyed the buggy level.

Loved them both. I was actually disappointed whenever I had to get out to solve a puzzle or leave my beloved vehicle behind to continue the rest of the game.

I am on the fence on the whole boat thing. I like the puzzles that you have to solve in order to proceed. I guess, the thing about the boat "scene" is that it is just too long and therefore feels too linear.

The boat was OK but the buggy was annoying as hell except where you SPOILER ALERT got to play with the big ass crane, man I had some fun picking things up with it, picked up a sae container and bashed the bridge to make it come down, the sound and inertia of that crane was just spot on END SPOILER but as for the rest of the ride I was glad to see it end except what followed was worse... my impression of this game is starting to slide down hill  Some one please tell me that I get to actually get into some urban combat soon cause all these jumping puzzles sick ass big time

Appollo, urban combat begins with the next mission and lasts at least several missions following that.

I didn't like the boat, liked the buggy better. They both followed a similar philosophy to HL1's On A Rail level, alternating vehicle sequences with on-foot sequences. I just felt the boat wore out its welcome sooner for some reason (even though it handled better than the buggy and the water was pretty).

*Possibly spoilers ahead*
What sucks is the antlion levels. I remember when I was a little kid, maybe 5 or 6, and me and my siblings would play a game called don't touch the floor. We'd jump from table to table, chair to chair, all the while trying to never touch the ground. Why Valve thought that it would be a good idea to make me use the gravity gun to play this same game or else risk getting eaten by giant bugs, I'll never know. The shootout at the end of the buggy seqeunce was great: more of that, less jumping from one rock to the next, then crossing the sand using two pieces of metal.

We'd jump from table to table, chair to chair, all the while trying to never touch the ground. I think every kid played that. Was your floor lava, the ocean (full of shark/jellyfish hybrid cthulhu monsters), or covered with fire ants? PS I still hate the boat, I now like the buggy. Go figure. PPS I forgot the acid floor! Duh.

mine was sand actually, and it was filled with monsters. it was either dune worms or those cheap rip offs from tremors. hl2 brought back those memories real quick.

I agree, that got irritating after a while (move things to walk across the sand). Then I got smart and welding some boots to the tops of two oil drums using my crossbow and just waltzed around ala-Stomp.

The boat level went on a bit long, but don't let that stop you. It gets better, oh yes indeed.

** Spoilers **
Ok I finished this level (the one with the buggy, the beach and tons of vicious antlions right?). I basically blew through it on the buggy, only got out a couple times (basically when the game forced you) and I didn't ever have any problems with it. I set the thumper to start thumping to keep the antlions away from the crane area and that was about it. I never did anything resembling walking on oil drums or used the gravity gun to avoid touching the ground.
Did I miss something here?

I thought the entire antlion section of the game was excellent, and only got better the longer it went. When you've reached what you think is the end of it, be prepared for a truly fun section of the game.

I loved the fan boat and the buggy level and the don't touch the sand level. In all honesty, there hasn't been a level I don't like. Ravenholm was exactly long enough. If it had been much longer I wouldn't have liked it much as it was quiet scary to me to play at night by myself (guess I'm a wuss when it comes to scary games).
I'm now at the prison and it is definitely the most difficult level I've played so far. Still great fun though!

Sandtraps is the best part ever. Only thing that would've made it better would be giant Tremors like tentacles instead of Antlions and more humans getting busted.
