Huh, the poll is dead even at 22.  While I realize that you can't glean too much from so small a sample size, I know that most people here are serious gamers and tend to take better care of their equipment than most.  I put a bit more stock into the opinions around here than those of some anonymous internet survey claiming X% failure.

That being said, a 50% failure rate among our crowd is astounding and does raise some serious red flags.   Since there's nothing I'm really dying to play for the 360 right now, I think that I'll wait at least until the summer before looking at one again.  Thanks for all the input!   icon_smile

i bought my 360 just shy of one year ago now, with a build date of 11/6/05, and it's still going strong...got the red rings once a couple months ago, but it resolved with a reboot and hasn't happened since.  that said, i'm probably going to give MS a call before the end of the week and take them up on their offer of an extended warranty before i hit the one year deadline (purchased 12/22/05) just to be safe...

On my third.

That's terrible! What are the odds that a device with just a 3% failure rate would die on you twice?

Well I'm on my third also...

Ditto. Of course #2 and #3 were refurbs, so had obviously already failed previously. #2 failed on me in a week. #3 is going for 6 months or so.

Flipped it on this evening and all was well...for now.  Played 2 games of Madden versus PhillyPeteRock with the only hiccup being EA's lousy servers dropping us at one point.  Whew.  <knocks on wood>

I am curious if we could graph the amount of time a unit was used before failure, too.  Being serious gamers, some of us may play more than others...
My unit has been fine, but it also probably gets 3-4 hours of use on an average week?

I had a launch day 360 that had problems from almost day 1. Unfortunately I wasnt smart enough to see that and exchange it early. I got fed up with it 3 months ago and got another with the help of some shennanigans at Costco. All is well now.

When you consider the number of people that are on their 3rd (or more) console, the failure rate is actually above 50%.

My box has just started acting funny in the last week or so.  I've been playing Fable and getting occasional lockups which I first assumed was emulation problems or something.  Now the last couple times I've been playing there has been some graphical corruption on the screen which leads me to believe there is a heat issue.  I haven't changed where I keep the console or power brick and it has plenty of open air so I'm not sure what the problem is unless the fans aren't working or something (it's not noisy at all).  But I don't suppose I can open it up myself and still get support from Microsoft.

Argh, if this thing craps out on me I'm going to be uber pissed!  Especially since I will have to send it back to MS, and during the holidays no less!

If MS sends you a replacement 360 does that mean you automatically get a 90 day warranty extension?  I just received a letter from them about signing up for the extended warranty and it says my current coverage expires in February 2007.  I'll have to check the serial number on the letter with what's on the back of the 360, but if memory serves it looks pretty close.  Did anyone who had to get a replacement system get this?

In a related matter, has anyone who paid M$ for repairs before they extended the warranty period gotten a refund yet?

I have not, but I don't have the energy to call and hassle them about it yet.

Yeah, I sit down for a little action with my girlfriend, Lara Croft, and she gets all prude on me when I try to turn her on.  See if I ever make the effort on another Valentine's Day you selfish tart!  I was even going to use all of my digits to caress your inputs, baby.  Anyway, I've sent her off to the attitude adjustment clinic so she can hopefully come back a little more appeciative.  At least it's all free except for the airfare down there.

I should've splurged for 2-day for my Wii as it's not going to get here until next week.  Oh well, I have "a few" PC games in my backlog anyway.

Ike, the pre-recorded message from "hip dude" says that it can takes up to 10 weeks to receive your check but they are all being handled automatically.  It basically said to STFU and wait if you were calling to inquire about it.

Hmm.  It didn't take them 10 weeks to process my payment in the first place.  One would think that the largest software company in the world would be able to iron out kinks like that.

Thought I was going to have to send it back yesterday, since all my 360 games were suddenly unreadable (no red rings though).  But, fortunately, I had the good sense to try the cache-clearing code, and that seems to have done the trick; went through all my 360 games to re-download any updates, tried a quick play of each, and they all worked, with the positive side-effect that now I'm interested in playing all my older games again.

My replacement 360 started making odd noises (kinda like a squeaking noise) last night.  I'm going to get a new can of compressed air today and try blasting it to see if it might just be dust building up.  And of course I just found the 'extend your warranty' form they sent me-  I forgot about it and it expired a couple of weeks ago  icon_redface  If this one dies I might just bite the bullet and get one from EB with their extended warranty (sorry, no local Costcos).

Another in the yes column.  My launch one inherited the 3 red rings of death about 10 months in.  I bought a new one immediately (core) and transferred over the hard drive.  I got the launch one back all shiny and new and gave it to my son.  It has been running fine since then.

I think mine is about to bite the dust.  I saw the rings last night, but was able to get it working again.  It's still locking up and has been chugging a bit lately, though.

How did that extended warranty thing work?  Was that automatic or was I supposed to do something?

I was kind of hoping I could hold out until the rumored "new" 360 comes out, but I don't know if that'll happen.

The base warranty was extended from 90 days to a year from purchase (automatically - no effort required on your part).

I was on the 14th hole in a great PGA season game in Tiger Woods 07 when all of a sudden the game locked up.
After restarting the 360, I got a message that the disc was unreadable.
I pop it out and there is this HUGE gash on the disc.

The 360 lies horizontal and I have never moved it.
The disc of the game I am currently playing stays in the tray, so I am not constantly opening and closing it.

I was playing for less than an hour.
This happened as I was lying on the couch.
The 360 was never bumped or moved.
And it scratches the fuck out of my disc.

WTF?

That happened to me on at least 3 discs with my original 360. Maybe more. It just mauled my discs. Thankfully every time I was able to get a replacement (except for one disc which it scratched badly but that still played fine). It was a freaking disaster. Games crashed constantly, the discs made awful noises, etc. Anyways-I am fairly sure your 360 is either going bad, already gone bad, or the DVD is screwed. Once that happened to me once, the floodgates opened. Hope you can get a new cd man.

Figured I'd resurrect this, since my 360 has now died.  The failure rate on these systems still just astounds me.  My system has had very minimal, very gentle use, and has still managed to crap out.
