Looks like native 1080p isn't gonna happen afterall....

Quote
Perhaps the biggest bombshell we've learned in the world of PS3 development right now is that many (if not most) games are simply running in 720p - not the ambitious, bleeding edge 1080p "Full HD" standard that Sony had us so excited about. And certainly, not two of them stuck together for a ludicrous 32:9 double-1080p.

Nvidia was on the money with its President's comments last May: resolution is indeed the enemy of graphics. Our insider explains: "Sony wanted 1080p, but we're working at 720p and 1080i, same as on the Xbox 360. Even with [final hardware] in mind, reaching good frame rates at 1080p with next-gen graphics is almost impossible. Instead many developers, ourselves included, are reworking so they run at 720p. PS3's output takes care of upscaling it - so no native 1080p, but it still looks killer." Perhaps there was always a specific reason why Sony felt it should say "up to 1080p"?

Color me shocked. Absolutely shocked. Then again, as far as I'm concerned, 720p/1080i is enough.

Sony overpromising?  NEVAH!

Seriously though, this is encouraging for me - I'm looking to buy a new HDTV and wasn't looking forward to paying for a 1080p set.

Given that there are very few TV's that support 1080p, those TVs that do are very expensive and HD signals are not currently pushed out in the 1080p format its not much of a loss and likely a good move.

I haven't read about any plans for OTA, Satelite or cable company's to jump on the 1080p format anytime soon. People are still just learning about HD and to support something now that likely won't be the norm for another 5-10 years is silly.

720p is such a big jump in quality from 480p that losing out on 1080p isn't a concern for me.  720p is just fine.

Can't wait to hear them spin how this is a good thing or at least how 720p wasn't "real HD" before but is now. If they are able to do better antialiasing than most 360 games seem to do, it should still look better, though.

Sony said that?  I find that hard to believe.

I remember them saying that 1080p was TRUE HD. I don't know if they ever came out and said that 720p wasn't real HD, but I do know they kept hammering home the point that 1080p was TRUE HD (according to them at least).

Which was funny since Sony makes 720p TV's that they market as HDTV's. Just more of the right hand not knowing what the left is saying when it comes to Sony.

Ok that I can believe.

Yeah that's why I can't see them saying 720p isn't HD.

I would expect them to totally play up 1080p though (as Hetz mentioned), since it a) would sell more PS3s, and b) sell more TVs.
