This pre-sale figure makes the Halo sequel the highest presale in the history of videogames.

Yowza!  That is crazy!  Think about this:

Average Gross Profit Margin on a 50.00 game is 8-10 bucks, we'll go on the top end for calculations:

10 * 1,000,000 = 10 million dollars profit on pre-orders alone.  CRAAAZY!

Don't forget that you have a large number of Collector's Editions of Halo 2 out there.  Although they aren't much more expensive, the profit margin on those should be a bit nicer.

For $5 more you get a ton more stuff. Methinks the profit margin is less on those, personally.

Knightshadedragon,

I am to guess that the money doesn't go to bungie until they send the product.  So right now ebgames and walmart and the retailers are sitting on $50 million of free money.  However it works, there is a lot of money out there sitting around waiting to be invested for a few weeks until the game comes out.

EXACTLY.  You also have to look at how much of those presales are paid in full and how much are 10.00 pre-sales.   EB wins out big time as they get to more tightly control their inventory as well.  (Not like this one is going to burn them to have extras on the shelf)

That said, the second they sell em to EB or whomever they get paid.

A little more info from Gamespot

So it looks like it isn't really 1 mil.

Oh, and $10-$20 for the Live Arcade games!
