Just so you know, HL2 was just released on steam. I was playing CS and someone types in that HL2DM was just released, then quit, followed by the rest of the server quitting. Edit: It also appears that some more of the Source SDK has been released, along with some patches for Counter Strike source and Half-Life 2. As usual, the servers are being pounded.

Is this optional, or will this come in as an auto-update?

Yep, it seems there's a bug in the release. I'm getting the same bug there none of my HL2 based games will start. HL2/CSS is kaput.
Which just plain stinks.

Optional.
Also, FWIW, I've had no problems starting the SP after installing and running HL2DM.

Wait, I just leave steam on, but with WoW out I don't even know what HL2 is any more. Does that mean HL2DM has been downloaded onto my computer in the background, or do I have to manually click download it? Thanks!!

Does that mean HL2DM has been downloaded onto my computer in the background, or do I have to manually click download it? Thanks!! You will need to exit and restart Steam. Then Steam will update itself and verify your CS:Source files. After that, you can click on Play Games and then click on HL2:DM at the bottom (it should be in light green). Click Next to start download it. It should only take a few minutes to complete.

The problems seem to be solved. I was playing earlier today and had absolutely no errors of any sort.
Deathmatch kicks ass.

They released a small patch around 2am last night that fixed the problem, looks like some programmers were raked over the coals for this.

I downloaded and installed the deathmatch patch earlier this morning. I didn't have time to try loading my Campaign game, but I can say that the Deathmatch portion worked...okay. I mean, it installed and loaded up okay, but the actual gameplay on the one server I tried was terribly laggy.
No problems with the software refusing to run, though....

The server lag problem is definitely not in the code. I think it's the same old problem every online game faces where people start running servers without knowing the game's upstream bandwidth requirement, then don't configure their server properly.
For a game with all those physics interactions happening, it'll require a lot more than the normal DM style games.

I played it for about an hour this evening and had a blast. It was pretty chaotic, but extremely fun. I can't wait for more maps and Team Fortress Source

I tried a mostly empty server (me plus 2 others), and still had ridiculous amounts of lag.
The gravity gun was interesting for about a minute, then I got tired of it.
The 'real' weapons also seem very underpowered, even against foes with zero armor.
All-in-all, not too impressed.

- Don I can't imagine how they seem underpowered. I seriously haven't had much lag at all either. Strange.

I do find myself missing the UT-style embellishments -- like a larger message telling you that you just fragged someone; "first blood" and "killing spree" type announcements, etc. I guess it would be less appropriate to the subdued HL2 world but it did feel a little dry to me.

This may be an extremely stupid question, but are there any official servers for HL2 multiplay?
