Yeah, great match! Sorry for breaking the rules about keeping characters. I thought it was the other way around (that the winner had to change his character between fights). Doesn't matter now though, since you won anyway. Tongue

Now if only I could get the fightstick I've ordered so I don't have to struggle with this PS3 D-pad. Actually, I did use the thumbstick for a few moves, such as Fei-long's leap kick.

Glad you guys were able to get your match in after all.

TiLT, you're now up against AmazingZoidberg from GWJ next; Glycerine you're up against gellar.  I'll update the bracket tonight.

I'm pretty sure I can make that, but just to be safe, you think you could do 9pm Eastern? I'll rush home regardless.

Probably.  I'll look for you at 8:45, but don't get in a wreck or anything over it.

ROUND 3 UPDATE!

Unfortunately, tiktokman had to withdraw from the tournament due to that pesky thing called real life.  He has vowed to return for vengeance should we have another tourney down the road.

Round 3 Pairings
GT vizionblind vs. GT Pingwrx
GT VegasD vs. GWJ 1Dgaf
GT Captain Caveman vs. GT pr0ner
GT Ralph-Wiggum vs. GT Harkonis
GT wonderpug vs. GWJ jonnypolite
GWJ Ahrezmendi vs. GT USMC Kato
GWJ Lancejt vs. GWJ Datyedyeguy
GWJ Sinatar vs. GWJ AMN
GWJ Nimcosi vs. GWJ TheCounselor
GWJ Atomicvideohead vs. GT Crumsteel
GT madpeon vs. GT kadnod
GWJ necroyeti vs. GT raydude
GWJ Moonrazr vs. GWJ Demiurge

Please add your opponent to your XBL friends list NOW to get in communication, and try to complete your match by the end of SUNDAY, Apr 5.  Gamertags are listed in the second post of the thread.  Remember you can manage friends and send communications on your computer through Xbox Live website.

If you don't complete your match by Sunday night, you have until Tuesday night to slip it in until I draw or forfeit the match.  Round 4 matchups will be assigned on Monday, regardless, and I'll just do my best to fairly assign the late folks.

Also, for transparency you should know I decided to flex my ultimate power and manually assign jonnypolite and myself to face each other this round.  He only has a short window for his match before he's gone for a week and I know I can count on myself to show up and fight.

Official looking serious hat off now.  Good luck all and have fun!

I've had a couple people ask if I'm using any kind of tournament management software or other tools to track the tournament, so I thought I'd give a quick behind the scenes look at my methods.

The picture I'm using for the PS3 bracket and the 360 finals is just something I made in Photoshop Elements.  For the lines for the brackets themselves I took a PDF of a bracket I found online and imported it into Photoshop and modified it to fit my needs.  Each JPG export is fixed but the base Photoshop file has the names of the PS3 players on individual layers so I can easily move them around and make corrections as necessary.

Managing the Swiss tournament for the 360 tournament is a bit more complex.  Here's the spreadsheet I made to keep track of things:

For each round there is a column for opponents and a column for score.  Each person is assigned a number, and in the matchup column I put the number of each person's opponent.  To the right of that is the person's total score after that round is resolved.  Green = win; yellow = draw; orange = loss.  For example, Captain Caveman at the top of the list won his first match against #16 and got 1 point, won his second match against #13 and brought his total to 2 points, and he's next going to face player #5.

When it's time for the next pairings I print out the spreadsheet.  The top scorers and bottom scorers are easy to pair up since they have no chance of having faced each other.  The middle ranked people (in round 3's case, the 1 pointers) do have a chance of having already played each other.  I scan across the numbers of their previous opponents and make a note of any potential conflicts.  Then it's just a matter of tossing the names for each point group into a hat and drawing the matchups.

That is no longer the case, I assure you.  I had previously been neglecting the Mantis stance abilities of Gen and pretty much only played in Crane stance.  I've since learned that vs some characters Mantis is the way to go.  Blanka is one of those.

Nice playing with you, jonny.  Match 1, round 2 is a bit scary to watch.  I have a strong start, and it starts looking like I might even get a perfect on you, and then you hit me with three solid hits and bam, over half my health is gone.  Ouch.

Hope you have a good trip, and thanks again for making sure to sneak in your match before you left.

Captain Caveman

Fantastic, fantastic match.

That was a seriously tense match! Pr0ner swept me the first match and then went ahead 2-0 in the 2nd. His Honda is the ultimate opportunist-- he's a very patient player who blocks better than anyone I've played and waits for you to over-extend and then punishes you mercilessly for it. Figuring my normal strategy wasn't cutting it, I desperately switched at the 11th hour to a more patient approach-- once I got even the slightest lead, I'd sit back and make him approach. This was much more successful me and I ended up winning the next 6. What a crazy crazy match. Given any more time, I'm convinced Pr0ner would have adjusted and start turning the tables right back. I have a feeling that if we played each other a lot, there's be many ebbs and flows as we constantly adjust and re-adjust to each other. I just so happened to have the advantage at the right time. All in all, I'm just happy I escaped with a win!

Necroyeti and I played Friday night. He's already posted in the GWJ forum so I figured I would post here for those who don't visit there:

necroyeti (Rose) > raydude (Sakura)
necroyeti (Rose) > raydude (Cammy)

necroyeti > raydude

We decided to play a 3rd match just for the hell of it, since we seemed pretty evenly matched. Wouldn't you know it, the fighter I was best with back in SF2 was the one I won with:

necroyeti (Rufus) < raydude (Chun-Li)

wonderpug vs. Ahrezmendi Cammy Exhibition

Great fights, Ahrezmendi.  It's amazing that even though I've played half a dozen SFIV tournament matches between this tourney and the Penny Arcade tourney, I still can't help but let my nerves get to me a bit when it's time to fight.  Made a good few stupid mistakes and missed out on jumping on some openings, but I had enough lucky breaks to balance it out.

Edit: He was able to get his round 5 match in, thanks!

Help support your friendly neighborhood Ahrezmendi! (for Round 5)

Ahrezmendi's leaving on Sunday for a 3 week trip out of the country and he won't be able to play any tournament matches once he leaves.  It would be great if we could fast-track his round 5 match before then so that he could at least be able to finish the Swiss part of the tourney.

If any of the following people win in round 4:
      • Nimcosi
      • madpeon
      • Sinatar
      • Lancejt
      • jonnypolite
Or any of the following people lose round 4:
      • Pingwrx
      • Datyedyeguy
      • AMN
      • TheCounselor
Or any of the following Type O- people, win or lose:
      • Crumsteel
      • Atomicvideohead
      • Ralph-Wiggum
If any of you listed above can find a way finish your round 4 match in the next night or two and then arrange to play against Ahrezmendi by the end of the week, that'd be super.  If not, no biggie.  Crumsteel and Ralph, you could even play Ahrez before you fight each other.  Don't worry about confirming the match with me beforehand; Ahrezmendis are currently first-come, first-serve.

      Thanks!
