I expect a sudden rush of September and November titles rushing to fill the gap.  Seems like everyone was tiptoeing around October.

I read some shitty things about the preview build and I welcome the delay if it means a better final product.

Yep, agree completely. Sucks because I wanted to play it, but good because it relieves some of the pressure on the insane pre-holiday lineup and also gives us something for the more dry post-holiday releases. Still, as kathode said, must have been a mess not to get pushed out.

I guess I could always just act out the game in real life in the meantime.

I couldn't have considered buying it until next year anyway, so the only disappointment for me is that the price for it used won't be as low as it otherwise would. icon_wink

sunnovvabittch.  seriously, this is the end cap to a f-ed week at work.  i guess i can direct some of the pre-order funds over to bioshock now, which would have probably fell off the buy now chart.  so, this really sucks for rockstar and my desire to kill ho's in a virtual world, but it's a big benefit to killing little girls and running from their big brother.   thumbsdown thumbsup icon_twisted

Well, that's kind of a bummer but the holidays were already too crowded.

It's a good thing Peter Moore got that GTAIV tatoo...now that it's been delayed and he's working at EA it all seems worth it.  Sorry, somebody had to say it and I felt today was my turn to be a jerkass.

When does Take-Two's financial quarters start would be my question?  This could be just misunderstanding that fiscal year doesn't mean calendar year.

(yea, I'm hoping it slips if it needs to though - better product > earlier product)

Their financial quarters put the game's release somewhere between Feb and April of next year. Announced during a conference call today, and backed up several times. Seems that they are having troubles with both the PS3 and 360, and both MS and Sony have a team of engineers at Rockstar helping them overcome those challenges.

These kind of things happen when you take a new engine (RAGE), and push it to its limits on new hardware. Hopefully the game ends up being really good because of it.

maybe what they are really doing is going through the game with a fine tooth comb so as not to risk another all out ban of one of their games...i am sure Take Two wouldnt be able to afford that

but anyway, this is pretty shitty news to be waking up to....

It just occurred to me that this has left a very nice opening for Mercenaries 2.  Hopefully that one ships on time and turns out as awesome as it looks, because I think it deserves some success.  Plus, it is actually shipping for 360, PS3, PS2 as well as the PC at the same time, supposedly.   Of course there is still plenty of time for a delay...

As annoying as he can be, Pachter is frequently right. I would bet some decent money this has a big something to do with it.

I'm more inclined to go with N'Gai Kroal's take- that the PS3 version was probably going to be delayed anyway but only recently did it become clear that the 360 version wasn't going to be ready.

I suppose that it's possible that there was a contract with Sony stating that it had to be simultaneous with 360 and it tied their hands but I'm dubious on that for a couple of reasons:

1) It's been reported that Take 2 asked Sony for a moneyhat for exclusivity but Sony never got back to them one way or another so Take 2 just kind of threw up their hands and gave up.  Given that, I find it hard to believe that Sony coughed up some money just to get simultaneous release guaranteed.

2) MS has paid out the ass for the downloadable content.  We know this because Take 2 has been up front with their investors about these payments.  For Sony to contractually demand that the PS3 version could not come after the 360 version then I would expect Take 2 to ask for some compensation in return but there are no indications of that at all.

Take 2 is losing a lot of money for this delay- they are so cash starved that they basically took a loan from MS for the downloadable content. If it was at all possible to get the 360 version out the door for the holidays (let's face it, the 360 version is going to sell a helluva lot more than PS3 version) without damaging the series' reputation by putting out a buggy and incomplete product then I think Take 2 would have done it.

Plus there are reports that recent builds seen by the press over the last month (demonstrated on 360 hardware) haven't been looking very smooth.  Given the huge amount of copies needed by mid-October, this game probably needed to be in certification by end of August if not sooner. Maybe the framerate and other optimizations would have come in that time but maybe not.

Ahh I hadn't had a chance to see if Level Up had been updated, but that is very good info-I tend to agree with that as well-it makes perfect sense. I do agree with Pachter's point that Sony likely would have tried it's damndest not to launch after 360. Maybe a deal came in later?

I wonder how its delay will impact forcasts for PS3s and 360s sold this year.

I think it will hurt both heavily.  I know everyone wants to point to Halo 3 as the 360's big system seller but I think there is a strong case that a large portion of the Halo fanbase may already have a 360 given the existing software lineup appeals strongly to those fans.  GTA4, however, really is brining in a much more general, casual fan than Halo that might not have been interested in the sci-fi trappings of something like Gears of War, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, etc.

For Sony it's harder to judge- just by virtue of the price differential between 360 and PS3 and the stronger software lineup of the former, I think GTA4 was going to sell more consoles for Microsoft.  But since the software lineup is definitely hurting Sony right now there is no denying that being able say you can get GTA4 in addition to their other titles would have been a big selling point this holiday season.  Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Lair, Uncharted, etc represent a nice diversity in software for the holidays but none of them is going to be a system seller for a large portion of the market.

I suppose Sony could have made a deal later but it seems kind of like a strange deal- if they are going to open their pocketbook why not pay for something exclusive like MS did?  Sony should be pushing for more content on the disk itself as a way to push Bluray and, worse case, their own downloadable content separate from what MS is getting.

Also, Sony would probably have to pay out a lot just for simultaneous release since it's immediately apparent that if you delay both versions instead then Take 2 needs to be compensated for whatever financial hit they take for missing the lucrative Christmas shopping season on the most important title they've put out in three years.

Also delaying the 360 release as part of their deal with Sony also means potentially screwing with the deal with MS.  Right now they have deferred the $50 million from MS for DLC to the expected delivery date of that content in March and October of next year.  Presumably delaying the game into first quarter '08 means delaying the DLC (and those deferred payments) by an additional six months as well.

To me it comes down to the fact that a seemingly innocuous agreement for Simultaneous Release on Both Platforms had the ability to put a big financial pinch on Take 2.  So I would expect for Sony to have to pay out the ass to offset that risk but we haven't seen any indications from Take 2 that payment of that magnitude occurred.  This seems way beyond getting a discount on license fees.

Ok, great info Kevin-thanks. Seems like your suspicions (And Croal's) logically just make the most sense then. It still is disappointing to me that while neither version was ready, that the PS3 version may have been in the worst shape and the catalyst of all this. Sony has to do something to get developers up to speed on the hardware-its too powerful to be constantly hamstrung like this. Even if it means paying a ton more out of pocket, Sony has to figure out a way around this. After all, its their console, their programming, their fault its this complicated.

Well, in this case, Take 2 has stated that both Sony and MS have been providing on-site technical assistance for GTA4.

This is good news. It's about time. I think Sony has more of an issue here though, as seemingly every notable cross platform game except for the football titles has been delayed for PS3 release. Hell, GRAW2 is just now about to come out. Something is slowing down development on the PS3, and I don't think its all simple economics of when to release the games. All of the rumors of the console being a bitch to develop for can't be wrong. Interesting. We need some dev commentary.
