GTA: San Andreas - not losing guns when dying?

I noticed that everytime I die, I lose all my guns. Well, I just died for the first time in San Fiero, and I kept all my guns and grenades and whatnot. Is this a bug? Or do you get a break when you die in San Fiero? Or does some skill effect this?

I kinda like losing all my stuff when I die... makes having money mean more.

Woops, scratch that... I blew myself up and sure enough all my stuff was gone...

May have been a bug, or it may have been because I died during a mission.

I was playing today and at one point thought, "Wait, I still have my rocket launcher? I thought I died earlier," so I think you're not imagining things.  Don't know what circumstances let you keep them though.

I wish you did keep your stuff when you died.  Losing it is just tedious.
