So one of the coolest features of Gran Turismo 4 is that it has lets you take 'snapshots' during replays, and gives you some pretty comprehensive options (fstop, shutter speed, aperture, etc.) in setting them up. It can render the images up to 1280x1024, and allows you to save them to a USB disk.

At any rate, here's a couple of "photos" I took of my broken ass orange MR2 in different locations around the world:

Here's some pics I made from one of the race replays:

photo mode wouldn't save to my digital camera or USB compactflash card reader... I'd hate to buy a flash drive just for this, but I might...

Buy the stick coop.  USB sticks are one of those things you dont realize you need untill you get one, assuming you are  PC user of course.  i could not live with out mine.

Hey Dimmona, I didn't know you could go into Photo mode during a race replay.  Did you do anything special to do that?  Save the replay or something?

Yes, the only way you can get into photo mode is to first save the replay.  Then all you have to do is load it into the replay theater, and hit 'select' to stop the replay and go into photo mode.

I guess we should mention again that the photo mode is NOT how the game looks when it's playing.   These are renders that are created in-game, based on replay footage or in the dedicated photo mode.

On a HDTV, I hear the game looks somewhat like that in gameplay, but on an ordinary TV, don't expect a massive jump from GT3.

Yup, it does. After playing it in 1080i, I could not imagine going back to the standard mode of play.

Good lord.

I may have to buy this game just for the photo mode. I need a few good desktop images for my laptop. biggrin

I haven't played any of the previous GT games so I have no frame of reference, but the gameplay graphics are pretty decent (although obviously the replays look better).  It's no where near, say, Rallisport Challenge 2 from a technical standpoint, but the car models are extremely impressive and the amount of antialiasing applied to everything is pretty cool - especially considering this is a PS2....

And yeah, for whatever reason I just haven't enjoyed the main racing mode (yet) but the photo mode alone has made it worth the purchase smile

Chaoz, what were your photo settings for those two shots of that white car?  Did you tweak the f-stop/apeture/shutter speed much, or was it just a matter of focusing the camera at a specific point?

Is it bad that I felt bored 15 minutes into the first set of races? This from a guy that played GT3 for probably 100 hours.

I've never played a GT game before, and I was bored in the first 15 minutes as well.... (until I discovered photo mode, of course).

It had a lot to do with focal length, shutter speed and manual focus.

To manual focus,  certer the bit you want in sharp focus, then hit (I think) the square button.  After it beeps (and AF turns into MF), reposition the photo to your liking and hit the shutter.

Longer shutter (1/60) will blur motion while shorter ones will create a crisp picture.  Focal length has to do with how much in front of the camera is in focus.  The lower, the less will be focused.
