Rockstar have just warned for optimal performance on the Xbox 360

-Install Disc 1(we knew this, this disc wont be touched again after the install)

-DO NOT Install disc 2(just play from this disc they say)
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-09-16-rockstar-warns-dont-install-gta5-xbox-360-play-disc

Quote
Rockstar has warned Xbox 360 gamers not to install the Grand Theft Auto 5 "play" disc.

On Xbox 360 the openworld game comes on two discs: one mandatory "install" disc and one "play" disc, both around 8GB in size. It's a similar situation to Forza 4, which also shipped on two discs on Xbox 360.

Prospective GTA5 owners - some of which already have the game as a result of early shipping from Amazon.co.uk - might have wanted to install both discs, but Rockstar recommends against it.

"For optimal performance, we recommend not installing that disc," tweeted Rockstar Support.

Then, "An 8GB install is required. For optimal performance, we recommend not installing the play disc."

Rockstar has promised more information soon. For now, the upshot is, with GTA5 on Xbox 360, you have to install disc one but run disc two from the drive.

I am hoping they can sort that out soon,as i want to install disc 2,i always want to install the discs i am playing
yeah, that's odd.

Pretty darn good review.  I appreciate the spoiler-free approach (unlike some other reviews out there this morning) and it gave me a good idea of what to expect.

read the review, watched the video.  great glowing review.

I do wish it had more details on the game mechanics for those who are going in blind from previews though.  in my case, I've read up on the changes and seen the earlier preview videos so I know all about this; the review covers the stuff I'm interested in and are what cannot be fully gleaned from a few minutes of video.

"We Thought 'This is Shit'"
nice!

Having also just watched some of the documentary on how Final Fantasy almost never got made, it's pretty amazing to think how easily our modern video game landscape could have been completely different from what we ended up with.

Ron I've read your review, but what do you think of the flying and driving mechanics.  Is the steering for cars still very loose?

It is VASTLY improved.   I *hated* the driving mechanics in GTAIV - felt like I was ice skating on the moon.  This is a lot better. They heard our teeth gnashing and fixed it, thankfully.  smile

Flying is much better too, though I still suck with the helicopter.  heheh

Looks like Sony and Ms have different approaches on people who got a copy early.

Quote
Talk about a tale of two cities. Sony and Microsoft have very different outlooks on the way they deal with their gaming communities. Sony offers free multiplayer, a helping hand to indies and a free pass to early adopters of GTA V, which is the complete opposite of what Microsoft is doing with anyone who has early access to Rockstar's open-world action game (that's not to mention what Microsoft thinks of multiplayer and indie devs).

We've reported on Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive going to some far extremes to keep people from playing GTA V before the official street date, this includes banning live-streamers, shutting down YouTube accounts, banning videos and hitting websites (like this one) with legal goons carrying cease and desists letters.

Helping Take Two Interactive take out the trash is none other than everyone's favorite big, bad, corporate overlord, Microsoft. As it was reported on in the thread containing the (now removed) videos of uncensored sex, airplanes and car crashes, Microsoft has been aiding and abetting Take Two in their own form of vigilante copyright justice.

Microsoft has gone over and beyond to stop pre-access to GTA V by console banning gamers. Yes, console banning them. Whether you were playing GTA V from a legitimate copy or you torrented the game that recently leaked, Microsoft has a zero tolerance policy on anyone playing the game that breaks the terms of service before the official street date. This should come as no surprise given that the company did the exact same thing when Halo 4 leaked early, too, as reported by Kotaku.

Sony on the other hand is doing right by gamers. If you have a legitimate copy of GTA V and want to play online, they aren't actively seeking you out to punish you, as it was noted in passing by Sony's worldwide studio boss, Shuhei Yoshida

So if you're a casual gamer who doesn't follow release dates and stumble upon a game you'd like but which hasn't been released yet, which you're not aware of, Microsoft will ban you. That's just great. Punish the consumers who haven't actually broken any rules instead of punishing the retail chain that did.

alternatively, if you pirate the game to play it early MS will ban you.  sounds like they're using the nuclear option on the pirates and the honest consumers don't have refrigerators to hide in.  in any case, if you get to play the game before I do you deserve to be banned.

They have updated with this:
Quote
UPDATE 3: Digital Foundry has investigated the matter further and discovered a possible solution to the Grand Theft Auto 5 Xbox 360 "play" disc installation issue.

The video, below, shows footage of the game played with the "install disc" installed to the Xbox 360 hard drive, as is mandatory, and the "play disc" installed to a USB flash drive. Doing so appears to eradicate the performance issues found when both discs are installed to the Xbox 360 hard drive.

I think that is a valid criticism.  In my mind there is a difference between being a criminal and being a horrible human being.  Itís fun to be the bad guy but I want to be the bad guy with a moral code that I can still respect.  I have the same problem with the Payday series.  It can be fun but I hate the characters and takes away my enjoyment from the games.

That is fair in most cases, but not when it comes to GTA. You always play a selfish, criminal prick in these games. The closest we got to morals was Nico, and he's a homicidal maniac who would get counted as a terrorist by even the most forgiving of nations. Anyone who, after 4 main games and a multitude of great spinoffs, doesn't understand that these games aren't about playing someone who gives you warm, fuzzy feelings, isn't qualified to review these games since he clearly hasn't done his research. It's like picking up a puzzle game and listing "it's a puzzle game" under cons.

I just sent a question to Rockstar support through their website asking if there was a patch in the works that would clear up the disc 2 install problems,i got a confirmation email saying ticket #953051

no rush Tongue

My guess, and this is just guesswork based on my own experiences with coding, is that the issue comes from the game being optimized to read from two different data sources. With both sources being on the same channel the system gets "clogged" with data, messing up the caching the game expects to be able to do. This would be very hard, if not impossible, to fix with a patch.

that kind of matches up with one of the youtube comments:

You don't get the point. The goal is to achieve the best performance. If the XBOX has to read the DVD1 and DVD2 from the same source, it will be the slowest cause the source (USB) will be too busy on trying to give the XBOX all the data from DVD1 and DVD2. The best perfomance is to have the Play DVD in the drive or installed onto a device other than the XBOX hard drive (which is busy processing the Install DVD). In a nutshell: Either install it to a fast USB HDD/Flash or leave it in the drive.

I think I have a 16 gig USB flash drive somewhere around here.  an 8 gig probably wouldn't work (I think it is 7.8 gig for the second disc plus half a gig for 360 formatting stuff).

If it worked, then no, it wasn't the same. Forza might not have had such high demands for streaming data as a GTA game, which makes sense considering the controlled nature of racing game graphics compared to open-world games.

In any case, this shouldn't be a problem any more with the upcoming console generation. Several GB of available RAM makes a HUGE difference to this kind of thing. Streaming becomes less of a strain since the memory itself can deal with most of the time-critical things.

I dunno,i felt more for CJ,as he was trying to get away from it all,but had to come home to "bury his 'moms'",and then family, homies and especially Officer Tenpenny would get in the way of trying to go straight

Claude or Tommy were just scarface types, and wanted to get to the top Tongue
