I'm super hyped for this. I usually don't get THIS way ,but wow. Monday night plans are set up in place to have a late night dinner with the wife, pick this up at midnight, come home and play until 4 or 5am. No work til 2 on Tuesday!

unfortunately UPS doesn't deliver until around 3 or 4pm here, so I won't be playing until later on release day.  however, it will be a chance for me to get schoolwork out of the way so I won't have much left over to distract me the rest of the week.  of course that week I also have to write either a 36 line sestina or a 19 line villanelle for my writing class, so maybe the game will help inspire me biggrin

No idea when the Microsoft store will deliver my copy, but hopefully it's before the weekend.  As much as I love open world action games, I can't really get excited about this one.   icon_confused  I think I felt pretty burned by GTA4 and have had such better gameplay experiences with other games that I just can't feel the hype.  But I'll still be getting it, like an idiot.

I'm really looking forward to this, though I'm in some ways looking even more forward to playing Puppeteer this week. Tongue

Had GTA 5 been a typical game, I could have expected to be playing it already this coming Saturday due to the way my online store ships its copies (2 work days ahead, which in this case means Friday. They do this to make sure it reaches most customers by release date, as the shipping time from one location to another in Norway is 1-3 days). Since Rockstar has been asking retailers not to ship it more than one day ahead, I'm not sure what's going to happen. If this store is following those instructions, my best case scenario is that I get it on release date, but there's certainly no guarantee of that. Ah well, I can be patient.

I have to ask everyone if they are planning on getting the console version this month or waiting patiently to get the rumored PC version later this year.

I can't make up my mind. I know I would prefer to play it on my PC but patient and gaming don't mix.

Opinions?

I'm grabbing the 360 version, and will probably double dip on the PC version later.  if it is like GTA 4 I'll play a ton of MP on the console, and actually finish the story on the PC.

shamefully, I'm probably going to do the same.  although if they decide to upscale to next gen, I may get that as a game to show off to visitors.

Yeah, I'm basically doing the same.  I was going to pass on the console release but with the $20 back by ordering from MS I figured I could justify the 360 version to myself now and then maybe the PC or next gen version assuming they come out in 6 months or so.

I'll probably end up double dipping eventually too. PS3 first, then we'll see. PS4 if it gets its own version, PC if it doesn't.

Is it actual $20 like visa card /check, or $20 MS Bucks?

Nice.  looking forward to tooling around in an old beat up pickup in the badlands.

I am curious how much you can affect the AI's behavior when you swap characters.  If I take someone and drive them out to the middle of nowhere, trash the car and then swap out, will the AI have them walk back on their own, or will it just warp them to the nearest activity?  what if I leave them with a gun exposed in a bank?  mid flight in a stall?

I'm looking forward to this one far more than SR4 and almost every other game this year.

My stupid question, because what little I have read, I still don't know.

What is so special about this one? Just more of the same, so everyone is excited for new missions/areas? Is there something that separates this one from the past ones? Please point me at a link if it's too complicated to explain. Or, obviously, just ignore me for asking a dumb question. I just realized this game was a big deal in the last 24 hours. (I am old.)

The excitement is about the same as it's been for every previous GTA game.  Rockstar really pushes the envelope of what a game system can do at any given time, and it's exciting to see.  Sometimes they push things too far, leading to choppy framerates and such, but you can usually directly see what they're doing that no game has done before (size of city, # of simultaneous cars, whatever).

tl;dr version: more of the same, but bigger and hopefully better

well for me i already love the GTA games(yes that includes the last one),so thats enough for me

But if you have missed some things over the past couple of months then...

Just watch the three protagonist trailers
Michael
Franklin
Trevor

okay?..now lets up that
Gameplay Trailer

and finally not least(online gets unlocked on October 1st)
Online Gameplay

Coupled with R* saying that there is 100 hr content in the single player experience and the above map that was leaked today

If all of the above doesn't get your juices going(especially the last two trailers),then this is not your game, simple as IMO icon_biggrin

maybe this sums it up best:

I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride

A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
Now I'm in a whole new world with you

Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky

A whole new world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath - it gets better
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be

A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world
That's where we'll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

So I'm struggling with which one to buy.   I'd really rather play it on my PS3 that is hooked to my computer.   that way I could play without monopolizing the television, and it would be playable with headphones when the kids were awake.

On the other hand, most here are probably getting it for the 360 and there is multiplayer.   Honestly though, how often is multiplayer popular on a game like this?    Almost never....

in regards to my last post.  V has three protagonists, which can be swapped to at will while not on missions and can be at certain times in missions.
There are many unique features in the game, one of those features is that when the players are playing as one of three protagonists in the game, the other two are living out their daily lives, and you will be surprised by what you find the characters doing when you switch back into them. Another unique feature is the swapping characters feature happens in a Google Earth styled manner and was displayed during a Game Informer demo, which it showed to have ran smoothly and without lag.
each has some specialty and special power, so while one is a better driver and has a bullet time ability when driving, another has improved skills for firearms and the last is capable of going into melee rages.

go look at the trailer for GTA online.  this is where a lot of time will be spent once it releases as it adds a persistent online world and does things in a sandbox game that haven't been done before.

Almost never....

we had a blast with MP in GTA4.  all kinds of general mayhem, racing in random vehicles (scooter racing FTW!), and this looks like it will take it to the next level.

Thanks for the answers, and nice poem CeeKay, I think (just had to write a couple of papers on poems, they give me a headache right now).

Still the fact that ATB felt the need to say he won't play it was the bigger selling point. It must be good!

heh, felt like some a song from Aladdin was needed.  and I feel your pain about writing poetry (or even writing about it), damn creative writing class kicked off with 9 weeks of doing that, with 6 weeks to go before we hit short stories.

It must be good!

Have you not played one before?  If not, have you played Crackdown, Lego City Undercover, Saints Row, Bully, or Driver San Francisco?  Same kinda thing.

GTA appeals to different people for different reasons.  Some people do really like the "controversial" stuff, how it's specifically about being a bad guy and fighting the law.  Personally, the sandbox gameplay is where it's at for me, and for the most part the driving aspect of the sandbox.  I almost always play the missions just long enough to unlock all the game areas, and then I get distracted by the sandbox and never get around to finishing the story.
