Any way to invert the X axis? If not, I already don't like this game.

Nope. Very confusing to me after I had oriented to an inverted X-Axis in FFXII. I got used to it again in relative short order though.

The Y axis yes.
Not sure about X. But I don't think so.

No separate camera controls from the aiming/movement controls? What is this 1997? Right now its a struggle to get through even the tutorial...when I want to move right I go left. When I want to look up I look down... Same with the camera...if I invert the y to make the camera work the way I like it, the aiming is off. For crying out loud, DR had independent camera/aiming...why not this 'halo killer'?

You have to think of Gears of War as a FPS with the camera moved back a little bit, not so much a third person action game. Dead Rising's system was made for a third person melee/action game and worked incredibly poor for quickly shooting things, which is all you do in Gears.

Try going into the mini dashboard and then preferences. You can set up axis prefs from there.
I don't know if they make a difference for GoW though, or if there is an X axis preference.

Only for Y-Axis that I could find. I couldn't find anything for X-Axis presets.

you want to invert both? you're an odd one The inverted X axis in FFXII made me feel less than warm and fuzzy, and when I move the stick up I want to look up, etc. etc.

I think the hyperbole police might soon be paying you a visit. Remember, Gears is essentially a first person shooter. You're controlling the direction your character looks, not orbiting a camera around him.

I could see how not being able to reverse it could make the game unplayable. I haven't seen many shooters that allow you to invert the X axis though. Admittedly I've never looked for it.
Luckily for me I prefer inverted Y and normal X.

Perhaps I can learn the scheme over time, but I dont' have the time to dedicate to it at present. Perhaps after the holiday... But man it's like learning to write with my left hand.

This reminds me of the movie Cars : Doc Hudson: I'll put it simple. If you're going hard enough left, you'll find yourself turning right. Lightning McQueen: Oh, right. That makes perfect sense. Turn right to go left. Yes, thank you! Or should I say, no thank you. Because in Opposite World, maybe that really means thank you.

So that everyone's holiday won't be ruined....I've played through the tutorial a couple times and it is starting to click.
Question: is there a way to jump over cover obstacles without first 'engaging' the cover?

Seriously-its a tremendously intuitive, very easy to learn and use system.

Not that I've seen. Generally though, if you're quick on the button, you can hop over said cover with little delay.

Why would you want to?

In third person games it's very common to do that.

In third person games some people prefer to control the viewport as if they were moving a camera around the character, so moving your stick to the right orbits the camera right but effectively moves the viewport left, and pointing the stick left turns it right. I'm not sure that I've ever heard of anybody doing it in a first-person game.

This advice, also given by Purge, has helped me tremendously. I still have to say outloud the way I want to go on occasion, but the difficulty is fading.

Oh, one other thing; unlike Rainbow Six 3, this game doesn't support voice commands.
