So, I recenlty picked up Gothic 3 and Gothic 1 and have been switching off between them.  Did anyone else here get Gothic 3?  I did a search but couldn't find any real full game impressions.

Personally, I'm liking it alot.  After dropping anothe gig of RAM into mys system (a planned update for my PC anyways)  and some slight tweaking of the .ini file I'm finding the game looks very nice and runs fairly smoothly.  I like the non-leveled aspect of the game- last night I wandered into a dungeon and slaughtered a bunch of goblins, made my way down the cave and came around a corned only to be confronted by 2 miniature dragons  :icon_eek:  Very cool and unexpected, and it gives me something to make a note of so I remember to visit later.

I also like the controls.  They seem very simple but there does seem to be some nuances to combat with the regular attack and the quick attack.  I can't wait to find someone who teaches the 2 weapon combat skill.

I grabbed it from the GoGamer sale a month back.  I've only dabbled a bit in it (three-four hours) but I definitely like what I see.  It's more Gothic (a good thing) and seems to expand on Gothic 2 to the same extent that part two expanded on the first one.

But the loading times were killing me.  The initial load is bad enough but tolerable if quick loads are, you know, quick, but quickloads take *way* too long.  And that's particularly heinous in a game lock Gothic that is sort of predicated on the idea that you can easily get yourself in situations you can't handle.

Hopefully the load times can be tweaked and/or patched, but even with those I'm looking forward to putting a lot more time in it once I know out a few other games.

The initial load time is an abomination.  I seriously felt like it was 20 years ago and I was waiting on my 1541 disk drive to do whatever the fuck it did so slowly.

The game, the series, is plagued with bugs and horrible localization.  The voice overs are just...my god, what the fuck?  Who could have signed off on such horrible work?  The guy that does Gorn, like the 2nd or third person that talks...its just...holy crap, it would be hard to come off sounding so horrible even if you were trying.

The game is a great concept (but really the first one was the gem, the whole trapped in prison thing was very cool) but poorly executed for the third iteration in a row.  Their UI continues to suck as well, the combat is a complete twitch fest, I shit you not.  Swing as fast as you can and its hard to lose.  Try to get fancy and you are fucked early and often.

I would pass on this game for about 6 months and see where the patches take it.

NWN2, while also plagued with slap your forehead in amazement bugs, is much more enjoyable for me.

I usually start loading the game and the grab a drink/take the dogs out/make a sandwich, so it's not like I'm actually sitting there waiting  icon_biggrin

Yeah, surfer/stoner Gorn was pretty hilarious, but then again I've given up on decent voice acting in games.  Hell, the adopted father in NWN2 practically put me to sleep whenever he started a speech.

I'm playing Gothic 1 concurrently with 3 (I still have to track down 2) and I like 3's UI alot better (not having to use arrow key/mouse button combo to talk/open a chest is nice).  I was hoping combat was going to be deeper, but you're right that it's mainly a twitch fest.  I just got the 2 weapon skill so I'm hoping for some neat combos.

Like NWN2 I really haven't ran into any bugs yet.  I'm liking both G3 and NW2 equally.

Daeghun is the worst of NWN2 voice acting, that I have encountered.  Most of the VO in NWN2 is good to great.  In Gothic 3...its all bad to average.

I think he was reffering to the NWN2 comment.  Personally, with G3, I'm having fun.  That said, it's too easy to break a quest in the game.  For example:

Spoiler for Hiden:
In Montera there is a slave with a Fire Chalice that is part of another quest.   To get it he says you need to liberate the town.  OK, so I go and liberate the town, but not through the pre-defined parameters that his quest apparently has (basically I slaughtered almost every orc before I discovered the rebel agent in the town, and even then he wouldn't initiate the revolt as I needed to get in favor of the orcs before he'd revolt  retard) so I could not get the chalice from him.

After playing through about 85%, I am getting a little bored. I really like how the game is all about finding your place in the world (your choices definitely have consequences as certain groups attack me on sight), but the the awful combat and repetition are starting to get to me. You have to fight so much, but it just isn't enjoyable. Just keep clicking. Although, I was one of the few who actually liked the combat in the G1 & G2. The challenge doesn't come from the combat, but rather from having to fight so many at once. just keep clicking. There are a ton of towns and outposts in the game, and even though they have a different feel, you do the exact same thing in each one. Fetch 3 three of these (and I can never find the last one), kill these, or escort him (the escort missions are insanely frustrating due to the AI). It is definitely worth a play if you like the Gothic series, but it is beginning to feel a little like a chore.

I can't tell you how many quests I have broken, but the good news is that is doesn't seem to matter.

Yeah it's cool. I haven't really picked up NWN2 yet, but even then it's not a big deal (unless it is, but it doesn't sound it like Tongue )

As for Gothic 3, I started playing only for about 60 minutes before this white flickering pissed me off so much I had to stop playing. But I found a fix (suppousively), by turning post-processing ON. Weird, I know... I'm going to load it back up now. It's all-low settings (7600 GT, AMD X2 3800, & 1 gig RAM), and I get around 30-50 FPS. I'm a graphics whore, but I'm even more of a performance whore (can't stand FPS that dips below 30 often). I'm going to try to tweak some more firepower out of the graphics, but I don't think it's happening.

I've played Gothic 1 and Gothic 2. I enjoyed both games moderately; they had more than their share of frustrating moments (or should I say I had more than a few frustrating moments with both games) but overall I'm glad I experienced them. The atmosphere and the story were very involving; in the sense that I cared about how it came out. So the inconsistencies and annoyances were minor compared to my overall positive feeling for the two games.

However, Gothic 3 just doesn't do it for me. Now, I've played the demo and several hours of the actual game with a friend's Gothic 3 and the game's bugginess and extreme load times were major problems. More disturbing, I suspected that the combat mechanics - even if everything else was patched to perfection - were enough to persuade me that the game would have to wait for an enormous price drop (basically I'd have to get it free) because I was able to do a great deal of mayhem just using the LMB and hoping no one ran through a freakin' wall (it happened, although at least that NPC fought back unlike some of the others) and...

I would've thought nothing could prevent me from buying Gothic3 but I was wrong. If anything, those reviews at 1Up and Gamespy and IGN and...were toooo kind.

I'm still playing through the game and finally made it up to the northern area.  What's annoying is that you can slaughter a ton of orcs with no problem only to get killed by a wolf or a goblin on speed.  Combat varies from creature-  some you need to use mainly quick strikes while orcs you can mainly use the LMB with the RMB attack used to disrupt their counterattacks.  Shamans (or any spellcaster for the matter) are a pain in the arse though with their fire/ice ball attacks and healing potions.  Last night I used the tactic of luring a bunch of other beasties into other Orcish camps
Spoiler for Hiden:
(in the north you don't have to liberate cities but destroy the orcs invasion camps instead)
and letting them doing the fighting for me.  I actually decimated a few camps doing this (and got the quest completion award while doing so).

The load times are bad after I upgraded up to 2 gigs of RAM and I haven't really encountered any othe bugs yet other than the ambient sound weirdness.  They just released another patch but I have not updated it yet.

The game is reminding me more of Diablo or Sacred now that I've played through some of the first Gothic, but I'm still having fun.  Would I be having fun if I was a die hard fan of the series and played through the other 2 first?  probably not, but at least the game has gotten me to track down the first 2 installments for play.  On a side note, if you encounter a NPC from the first 2 games they will recognize you and the game will give you a conversation option for the NPC to fill you in on their back history.

Supposedly 1.12 had some tweaks to the combat system, but I haven't updated yet.  I have it downloaded but I read that some weird sound issues pop up with it so I've been putting it off.
