Can't wait for this one. The only game I've completed in German was Gothic. Loved the sequel. but I lost my save games with the add-one, and never got round to completing it.

I wish they'd release a combination pack with Gothic 1/2 plus epxansion.  I'd definitely buy it then, but right now I can only find G2 and the completist in me says no-go w/o the 1st.

Don't hold off forever -- G2 is too good a game to be missed.

I don't know...I just couldn't get into the second one. It's too big for my tastes. I just feels overwhelming. I liked the first better from that standpoint.

Starting with G2 is no problem. It even makes it easier to go back to Gothic.

How does it make it easier?  I have Gothic 1 but haven't had time to really get into it other than fiddling with the video settings and walking around for about an hour.

The interface hurdle is lower and you know the game mechanics. Now you can do simple stuff like picking things up with (Ctrl or LMB). This is one key less than in Gothic [(Ctrl or LMB) + forward].
I think it should take about 15 minutes (5 minutes each for controls, trading and inventory) to really get Gothic going when you´re coming from G2 and stuck to the classic combat controls instead of  giving in to the temptation to use the new ones.
Going from Gothic to G2 is easy. The interface changes are intuitively clear.

i have to agree, by the way, it's no problem going from gothic 2 to gothic 1 if you must.  i did it and had a ball both times.  first time i've ever completed two full computer RPG's in less than 3 months!

It´s probably just a matter of taste whether you prefer the more thought out characters and setting in Gothic or the better quests and pace in G2.
IMO the series got better with every installment, incl. TNotR.

This is an indicator that you should play slower. Make a level or two and spend it in Str and a sword skill.
How far in the game are you? Do you have 65 Str? You can get a good weapon early on with this requirement.

Agreed.  Focusing on strength+one of the swords skills you can really get a good weapon swing combo which really makes defending yourself easier.  I still got my ass handed to me for quite a while but it gives you a fighting chance early on-even with a weaker weapon.  IIRC, you can't fight as well from the start in G2 as you can in G1 either.

Perhaps I missed it but, how far along is Gothic 3?

Just another thing, I liked to be able to get in a fight and then take a break and have a smoke.  Or even better, arriving in the Old Camp(G1) at night after a long fight-fest and sitting around the fire with the townspeople.  You light up a Northern Dark and pull out a lute and start strumming away.  It really rounds out the game to be able to do stuff like that and is one of the things about the series that really puts it in my top favourites as RPGs go. Someone said it earlier but G1 and G2 are also among the few RPGs I've played straight through within a few months.

For anyone looking...Best Buy had original boxed Gothic 1 games just a few weeks ago for $10.  Gothic 2 was $20.  I don't know if they still have them but I've seen them on the shelves for probably 6-9 months so it wasn't a one time thing.

I got Gothic 2 new at Babbage's/Gamestop a few months ago for $10.
