1Gig is kind of pushing it, but it's your choice obviously. I do want to try it out eventually, once I get my PC setup again.

Anyone played the demo and the retail game, and how do the two compare?

 thumbsup

That would be awesome. It's a game that I definitely want, but I'm worried my computer can't handle it. A demo would be the perfect thing to see how badly it stutters.

Seriously...no problem guys.  If there is ever a demo or something you want hosted locally, you have but to ask.  If I can accomodate, I will.

I tried a bit of the demo, so far it seems like a massive system hog for the visuals it offers.  I had to tone it down - granted my machines aren't the best (3700+ San Diegos or 3.6Ghz+ Intels, 7800GT graphic cards, 1024MB PC3200 CL2 ram) but they tend to play everything else really really well..  Also it seemed to have load time issues when running across the landscape.

The AI was pretty bad. I cut up a few rebels right infront of their boss and they didn't really seem to mind after a few minutes.  saywhat

So is there a consensus on this game yet?  Wait for some discounts and patches?

The game was lamblasted by gamers at launch in Europe (boars were FAR more difficult opponents than somebody who was a master with a sword and had armor on, among many other issues). In addition, after playing the demo, I was bored as all heck within a matter of minutes. No real stragety in fighting (button mashing tended to work better just about all the time), and nobody seemed to mind in the slightest that I robbed the entire starting 'town' blind. And somehow I could still carry everything I found (which included at least a dozen weapons of mass destruction).

Yeah but between the patches and .ini tweaks available, people reallly seem to be into it now.  It seems like there is a great game underneath a bit of a technical mess- so par for the course for the series.

ill hope for the best but the demo was not impressive. It did'nt feel like a Gothic game. Funny I could clear out a town of orcs but up the road near a tower some bug killed me easily.

'gads.  I haven't tried any ini tweak yet but this is completely unplayable on my rig.

It's old, but I expected to be able to play on lower settings at least.  P4 2.66ghz, 1 gig ram, 7800.  At the lowest setting on 1024x768 it looked worse than Gothic 2 and was still unplayable.

My machine plays Oblivion just fine.

There seem to be serious performance issues with the engine in it.  For some fucking reason we've been seeing more and more games with unoptimized engines.  NWN2, Railroads, Gothic 3 all have similar issues, but none look better than anything else already out there that performs amazingly well.  In fact, Anno 1701 looks *MUCH* better than Railroads, and has just as much shit going on, but runs 10 times smoother.

I don't see where their disconnect is, every developer/publisher I have worked for had a variety of test systems, so they can't tell me they didn't have a variety of boxes to test the damn games on!

Holiday rush is causing games to get released to early.  Engine optimization is probably one of the last things done, and it appears to be getting skipped.

That's odd - I have a AMD Athlon 3500 (about 2.2 GHz), 1 GB RAM, and a GeForce 7600GS (not sure how that compares to the 7800), and it runs smoothly for me at 1024 with everything on High.  There was some slowdown right at the beginning with all the orcs running around, but it cleared up after about 10 seconds and was smooth from then on.

Hmm..  I'm gonna try some tweaks this weekend and see what I can do with it.  I really want to play Gothic 3.  1&2 were some of my favorites games ever.

I'm running the demo in a P4 3.2 with 1 gig of RAM and a 6800.  Cranked all the settings up and it chugged like crazy, so I turned down the shadows and other than some slight stuttering during the opening fight it seems smooth so far.  Of course I haven't gotten out of starting town yet so it could change.

Well, I've been playing the demo a little.  It seems really odd to me that when you die, you stay on the  ground for about 3 seconds and then get back up again with about 2% health....meanwhile, whatever killed you turns around and starts wailing on you again...so you have to RUN like crazy as soon as you get up after "dying"....frustrating as hell.

Other things...sword play seems like a click frenzy since you can't control your swing other than weak or wind-up swing (which releases on it's own).  I still have not read the manual though.  Archery seems decent.

Gawsh, I really want this to be a good game.  Lets hope it turns out to be.
