I'm pretty stoked about this, these used to be some of my favorite games.

That is great for people that like those kind of games. I'm not a big fan though.

The "not that kind of dogfighting" line made me think you were going to tell us about an XBLA game where you actually fight with dogs.

Yeah, I changed the title a bit because thats what I thought people would think at first glance.

I was under the impression that the Ace Combat style dogfighting was more about shooting people with missiles from long range rather than maneuvering to shoot people at close range like in the movies. I would be more interested in a good WW2 era dogfighting game, or even better, a resurrection of X-Wing v Tie Fighter.

Dogfighting, I think of planes.  "Not that kind of dogfighting," I think of dogs fighting. smile

Should I have called it "Jet's launching missles at each other game"? Dogfighting is the term for aerial combat so thats what I used.

I didn't mean to offend.  I was just thinking about the dogfighting speech that the Michael Ironside character gives at the beginning of Top Gun when the pilots first get to the school.

Haha, those 150 sales are really going to put them over the top.  slywink  Or maybe these games are more popular than I give them credit for, but I don't know a single person that plays them.

They sell at least 500k per iteration, AC4 on the PS2 reached greatest hits status. Not sure how AC5 did though.

I was exaggerating a bit calling it huge though, hehe.

AC5 did well but not anywhere close to what AC4 did.  The exclusivity probably shouldn't be too surprising though- The AC series is much more popular in the US than it is in Japan.

I wouldn't call Ace Combat a flight sim.  It's a little bit more complex than something like Crimson Skies.  Lots of fun though.

Well I never was one for splitting hairs. I use to see so many people argue this point back and forth on all the "hard-core" sim sights.

No complaints from me.  I just don't want anyone new to the series to get the wrong impression.

I dont think there is anything to worry about there....Console's will never have a "Flight Sim" sim....But then again, who knows?

AC6 will be a day three purchase jet me.  I am going to have to wait for the initial opinions.  Playing a jet "sim" game on an HD big screen will be pretty damn cool.  Co-op missions would put this thing over the top.  I am just weary of "new" features.  The other games in the series are pretty damn cool.

Well the first thing I think of when I hear "dogfighting" is WWII or WWI warplanes.  Of course, perhaps in the OP's home of Tennessee, perhaps the first thing people thing of is.. dogs fighting?

Eh?  Back in March, when I made that post, we had just been told that the dog in Fable 2 would replace the minimap, would not be controllable, would attack enemies for us, be trainable Black & White style, would morph good/evil Black & White style, would feature advanced AI, and allow us to experience love.  The joke's not quite as appropriate these three months later.

too bad too, as a few really good sims would play great with it.

at least it should be usable on pc, so you can play it with the occasional pc sim that comes out.

I thought the main reason we don't have any sims on console is because of the controller interface (limited to only a few joystick buttons but a real sim requires a keyboard and/or HOTAS setup).  So now that they can include a Saitekish HOTAS setup with a game (at a reasonable price I assume), why don't we see some real sims on a console?  Why are the makers of IL2, Lock-On, Falcon, MSFS etc. not considering an approach like this?  It might be a great way to revive a dying genre.

I know a driving-sim is not the best thing to compare to, but Forza 2 is a good example where a sim is kicking butt over it's arcadish competition.

I've always thought Ace Combat was less complex then Crimson Skies, especially less complex then the PC versions of Crimson Skies.  Ace Combat has reduced jet fighting so much that it plays more like an arcade bombing game more then anything.  Crimson Skies always had more dogfighting.

Ace Combat is still a pretty cool game though, so I'm looking forward to it.  Hopefully there will be a demo out.
